Traveling the world on a very low budget

An Italian couple managed to travel around the world for fourteen months and only spent six thousand Euros. They began their journey in Spain and managed to visit twenty eight different countries. They liked budget flights, hitch hiking, going across water on other peoples yachts, couch surfing and staying in their small tent. It is interesting that although they were traveling with a tent they traveled very lightly. If you traveled around the world which budget ideas would you have? Do you find sleeping in a tent comfortable enough to enjoy it? Which forms of transport do you find are budget priced?

Cheapest form of transportation, backpacking. Not sure if you can go across the borders there, you can't here. Used to be that you could hitchhike across America, but that's too dangerous here now. Too many loonies out there. So once in a country, walking. Maybe take a train from one country to another. Probably sleep in a hostil.

I know it wouldn't be safe to hitch hike down through America down to Mexico. Greyhound buses or Amtrak would be the way to go. I liked the youth hostels that I stayed in when I was in the USA. There seems to be a day trip from Florida to the Bahamas. Most of the Caribbean doesn't have a ferry service except st Lucia to Martinique then to Dominica. I think there might be a ferry in St Vincent and in Trinidad to Tobago.

All good things to know. There are at least 3 ferries from Vermont to NY a nd a couple of bridges. Depends on where you are as to which one makes sense to use and where you're s tarting from.

What an inspiring story, Maxima. Thank you for telling us this one. I also want to travel the world as cheap as possible. I am a student who can't find a job so I just save my allowance to be able to travel. Last time I went to Antwerp and stayed in a Hostel. Staying in a camping place and Hostels would definitely save a traveller a lot of money. As for the comfort, sleeping in tents does not bother since I have done it many times during my Girl Scout days and I find it comfortable.

I am glad that you found some inspiration from the Italian couples story. I hope that your studies are going well. When you studies end I wish that you will find the ideal job. It is interesting that you learned how to enjoy camping when you were a girl scout. When I was a student my university term came to an end in June. I traveled in the summer holidays to Kenya, Israel and Jordan plus Germany and Austria. In the summer holidays after my first year of teaching I traveled to Western Australia.

Thank you for your kind words. I also think that we need courage when we want to travel right? When I graduate I will see to it that I will find a job to support my hobby:-) Have a great weekend.

I don't think I would ever be able to travel the world in budget. I tend to spend a little when it comes to hotels or places to stay when I go on vacation. My reason for this is the bathroom. I am very finicky when it comes to bathrooms and the cleanliness of it that I tend to check out of a hotel when I don't like the way the bathroom looks (and smells). I also would not be comfortable sleeping in a tent. But when it comes to transport, I do try to find discount rates whenever possible. This is where I know I can save on money. Also, I don't like to buy gifts or souvenir items so I also save on money when I go on vacation.

On my trips I like to buy a costume doll for my collection. I tend to stay in guest houses because they are more where the local people stay than the tourists. I know what you mean about wishing bathrooms to be very clean. The worst bathrooms I found in Sumatra in Indonesia.

The budget ideas I have in mind will be the backpackers inn. I believe that they're spread allover the world wherein you can be accommodated especially if you're a traveler from other countries and get reasonable rates. I know that I can stand the tent if I don't have to do it alone. It's kind of scary to think that I'll be alone inside a tent. To make myself comfortable, I'll make sure I bring with me an inflatable bed. I think riding the bicycle and tour around the world is a great combination but will definitely need a lot of strength and stamina. I bet I'll lose weight...lol, if I can have someone join me in such excursion, I'll be brave enough to take a budget trip!

I loved riding my bike in the Netherlands when I was there. The landscape is very flat indeed. I had a one person tent that only weighed 1.9 kg. I felt safe and happy camping in it on my own. I like the idea of an inflatable bed. I used to really enjoy staying in backpacker hostels.

Wow that's cool. They've must have really enjoyed it. They have good ideas on how to travel with very low budget. They gave me an idea, i think i would do that someday. LOL. I think sleeping in a tent will be comfortable enough for me as long as there is good weather.

Good luck planning your trip. I am glad that you would be comfortable to sleep in a tent. I know what you mean about only in fine weather. In Australia I found in one area a very hard ground for getting the tent pegs in. I also found my tent wasn't waterproof and ended up all wet. On that island I had to keep my food away from the bush rats.

If I dont have enough budget i better stay at home and save my money. We cannot enjoy well if we dont have enough budget.Instead of relaxing on the place where we go,it become a disaster, because we always think on ways how to keep our money be enough for us.

We have AirAsia catering for budget travelers. Periodically they offer almost free seats to travelers but one need to book well in advance at least one year ahead before traveling. Their slogan is 'Everyone can travel'. True to their words as they are so generous in slashing their fairs to almost zero fares except for airport tax and handling charges which doesn't amount to a lot. Even with limited cash we all can travel anywhere provided we are willing to sacrifice on some inconveniences like having to sleep in tents and risk being burgled in the countries we visit. Hotels can be expensive for budget travelers but seasoned travelers should be able to find cheap BB hostels anywhere they travel.

Often the couch owners gave them a meal. They ate cheap food sold on street corners and amazingly stayed well. They limited which sights they saw in the destinations. Some entrance fees are steep. Yes, they have some good friends overseas as well as total strangers.

That sounds like a wonderful vacation. I am not sure I would feel comfortable hitch hiking or getting rides on other peoples yachts. I am glad they enjoyed it and that it was a safe vacation for them. I have always wanted to back pack across Europe. I think I would prefer the train if I was traveling though. Of course I am not as young as I use to be. I am way more cautious than I was when I was younger!

When I was young I needed to complete all my Inter Rail trips by age 26 years old. There are passes for all age ranges now I am pleased to say. I haven't been comfortable doing hitch hiking because at the worst it could be dangerous. I felt worried doing it twice due to a lack of public transport. The Italian couple have more courage than me I think. Good luck planning your trip.

The story about the Italian couple is very inspiring, and I think that it is possible to travel without spending a lot of money if you make the right decisions about transportation, accomodation etc. The cheapest kinds of transportation would be hitch hiking, local busses and budget flights. Hitch hiking can be risky and it can be uncomfortable to travel by bus for lots of hours, but it is possible to save a lot of money that way. In some countries you can also save money if you choose the cheapest train tickets like hard seats instead of soft seats. The cheapest kinds of accomondation would be couch surfing, staying with friends (if you have friends from other countries), camping and hostel dorms. I have gone camping in the past and I didn't mind sleeping in a tent at all, but if I was going to travel for many months and wanted to save money, I would combine that kind of accomodation with other kinds of cheap accomodation instead of staying in a tent all time.

It is lovely that you have friends in other countries that you can stay with. I am pleased that you found the camping comfortable. Yes, it is a good idea to mix staying in other accommodation and not stay in a tent for every night on an entire trip. I got put off hitch hiking when there was a backpacker murderer in Australia. I have only hitch hiked twice and it had been to do with dire circumstances. Yes, choosing hard seats in China would be a lot cheaper than choosing soft seats. In Egypt they try to get tourists to pay for a sleeper on the pricey night train. The day time journey on an ordinary train is so much cheaper and I have read the day light scenery is stunning looking.

Hi Maxine, I traveled on a very low budget several decades ago. Went to Bolivia and Colombia in South America, continued to the US visiting aseveral states and ending with a 3 month´s trip around Europe. The lodgings included friend and relatives houses, camping and even sleeping inside a car once. I had good camping gear then aand I was young!

Hi Marguicha. I loved hearing about your exploring around Bolivia and Colombia then the USA. I wonder if America was less expensive then. Your three month trip around Europe must have been fantastic. You did well to manage to sleep in a car and having some overnights at your friend and relatives home. The camping must have been very economical.

Hi, there. It sounds amazing to travel around the world with a low budget. The couple did make full use of each cent of their money. Making a good travelling plan is a really good idea. As to me, I would rather go to only one area than many places during one journey, because I want not only to enjoy the beautiful landscape but to feel the unique lives of the natives, and it does take some time. I want to know about how the folks live their lives, and to get in touch with them, the more the better. Besides, I find it hard to fall asleep sometimes, especially when I come to a new place. Therefore, I think I won't sleep in a tent, sacrificing my sleeping comfort for my money. Compared with sleeping, eating is not a big problem to me. I think I could eat simply enough to save money, as long as I don't feel hungry. Thanks for your question, and have a good day.

I have a tourism related degree, i know sometimes you dont need to pay by yourself. Some company paid you to travel around the world. All you do just post your journal. Or I know you can apply the job in the travelling company, be one of the assistant to take people travelling the world. Or you can have a work holiday, I know right now, England, Canada, Paris and Asia and etc. You can learn the language, the culture and work there.

This I wanna do. I dunno when but I want to do what they did. I will do anything just to travel around the world. Sleeping on a tent is no problem for me as long as I have a place where I can freshen up and go for another round of exploring the next day. Having a host in a city surely is a great factor when traveling on a budget. Having someone tour you around and point you to the places where you wanna go and give you a place to stay, really saves you time and money when in a foreign land. And as for what kind of transport that are budgeted, I would go for sea transfers. In my country, the government is promoting the roll on roll off vessels that connects the islands through at the archipelago as an alternative way of traveling. They are a bit slow but really saves you a lot of money when going around the islands.
