Do you think of health or of taste primarily when eating?

I am more interested in how a dish looks, smells and tastes than about health when I eat. But I´m sure that if I serve a nice looking dish, the quantity will not be as big as to make me overweighted. And surely if the dish is of good quality as ingredients go, it must be healthy. What do you think, friends? Are you very worried about each ingredient being perfectly healthy or you just think they will be?

Hi marguicha, What an interesting question, I would say both. When I see something nice I would probably eat it, but if it looks way too oily or something about the colours that do not attract me, I would not eat it. I used to be very health conscious and am very careful with the things I eat, but not recently. I seem to have lost control and just eat anything that looks good to me.

I am a believer that we can teach ourselves to eat beautiful, tasty AND healthy. In fact, a nice dish of food is never one that is filled to the rim.

That´s what I mean. A good looking dish will boost your appetite. And it doesn´t have to be full of cream or other fats.

Great belief actually. I had a vegetarian meal yesterday for lunch, it was brown rice with beans, potatoes, carrots and leafy veg, with a bit of purple cabbage salad. You can imagine how it looked like, very colourful and enticing. It was definitely delicious.

I agree with you its irritating to eat anything tasteless but we must adjust between taste and health so that we get both adequately and be happy ......... Hare Krishna Ganesh

I don't really care how something looks as long as it tastes good. Unfortunately, I do have a sweet tooth so I tend to eat things that are not very healthy and often too much of them.

You should come and see a dish here when I´m on the when I´m on the decorating mood, Deb. Last year, a fellow mylotter sent me a recipe and I took a picture of the dish I made with it. I think it looked fine. And it tasted awesome too.

At the end of the day? if I eat at any of my friends houses? I know the food is good and healthy! and the taste is so good and no I Am not worry about some ingredients are they healthy or they are not? who cares I just like to enjoy my food...when I cook at home I'm sure to do my best but when I go out to eat I just cast my caution to the wind.

Hi marguicha Here is what I believe - When cooking, ensure that it is hygienic and healthy. While eating, enjoy if tasty As I do both - cooking and eating, I dont really bother much about the cooked dish in terms of health. When I was healthier and allowed to eat outside, I always believed and followed the tasty ones more than the healthy ones

I take great care of cleanness when preparing food. And if I have the suspicion something might not be good, I will get ill. So I don´t even try to eat food that doesn´t look good to me. After that, as you say, comes the eating process. I like a dish that smells good, looks good (with a dish that is not full as I prefer to have seconds if I so wish) and then tastes good.

I agree with you, in my opinion if the foods looks unattractive though it feels good, maybe people will think before eating it, but if the foods sure looks good, people would eat it without thinking.!

For me, part of an attactive dish is a dish that is not filled up to the rim. I like different colours in salads, nice looking plates and all the trimmings. If I eat beautiful, I also eat less.

often it is neither. i pretty much eat just because i have to. see, i have nose issues that don't allow me to smell or sometimes even taste the food that i am eating. i do try to eat healthy when i can.

Hi marguicha, in any party I don't bother whether the dish is healthy or not. Good taste and smells attract me. Even when I go to any restaurant I order for tasty and fine smelled dish . But at home I'm cautious about healthy food.

If I thought that just because something looked, smelled and tastes good that it must be healthy, I'd be living on chocolate. The reverse is also true. Just because something tastes bad to me, doesn't mean that it's necessarily bad for me. No matter now good it might be for me, you won't get me to eat a parsnip. I think a balance should be easily achievable if one just uses common sense, and without really worrying about the healthfulness about every morsel that passes our lips. Where's the fun of that? You'd probably be the healthiest person to have an ulcer.

Yes, I knew what you meant. And I agree that most foods, cooked properly would taste a lot better. There are still a few things that no matter how it's cooked, presented or hidden, that I just won't eat. Parsnips are one (there are very few veggies that I don't like).

You know I was not talking about chocolate. I would also be living on chocolate if that was the meaning of my post. I´m addicted to the brown poison. I meant I like to eat yummy food. If something is well prepared, no matter what it is, it is very good. I remember, when I was little, for some reason people tended to overcook veggies. They were gross. But if they are cooked as they should, besides having more vitamins and minerals, they taste and look a lot better.

Depends of the day! I love to eat and, most of the times, when I'm going to eat something, I care more with the taste of that food. But, sometimes I want to lose some weight, so, I start to care about how healthy the food is, but I always try to eat dishes that are healthy, but that still are tasty otherwise no diet will last.

Hi marguicha, Like you I don't put much thought on the health benefits that I can get from the food. If the food looks yummy I really become interested on eating or tasting it. But of course I need to avoid foods that are not good to me.. like in my mom's case she';s not supposed to eat crabs... so I would be very careful If I came to such point where my doctor would advise me to stop eating some foods.

When i eat meals at home during week days, i know my ingredients, i know what to eat and how much to eat . So that when i go out to eat during weekends , i do not have to think much about calories and my weight. Balance is important.

Since I and my husband have been cooking for over 40 years we incorporate both when preparing meals. There are days when meals are very healthy and once in a while we cheat and enjoy something that is just yummy. You can mix and match ingredients so that every meal tastes great without losing sight of it being healthy and good for you as well as a nourishing meal that won't leave you hungry. Moderation is the name of the game and food should taste good!

I have a food allergy, so I tend to think both. Sometimes it takes me over half an hour just trying to decide where to eat. I am quite picky with my food, but if I really like one dish, chances are I would tend to eat it over and over again. This is true when it comes to pizza and lasagna, two dishes that I do not like to think how many calories each serving is, nor do I care. I cannot eat seafood so occasionally I would treat myself to either pizza or lasagna. And I don't care if someday I will have hypertension because of it.

this post is very interesting. I am not overweighted, and I am sure I will never. the reason is that I love sports so much including tennis and swimming. I made the decision that I will work out myself at least twice a week when I am on work, although i am still a student now. I am very confident now lol.

I have a policy when it comes to food. I eat a variety of dishes. That is, I am more conscious of eating different dishes or viands rather than focusing on the health benefits or deliciousness of a certain food. This mentality makes me unabsorbed to a certain food as I always think that I should eat a different kind of food after I eat that food. Variety is the key for me. Even how delicious or healthy a food may be, I wouldn't try to eat it straight for the day or munch on it everyday. I think that everything that is excessive, especially on food, can really ruin your taste and health at the same time. So I'd go for variety.

I mostly think of my health, although my diet is already normal to me since years. But still I have to think of my allergies, they can pop up any moment, mostly unexpected. Also because I already use meds I try to eat as healthy as possible and drink more water to get rid of the toxic.

Hi marguicha: it is a paradox whether we like it or not that there is an inverse relation between high taste and real health: the most attracting stuff invariably contributing a whole lot of calories. That's true with kind of foods that we have and so it must be for many other foods world over. Taste itself being a very subjective assessment for different people, it is of course not always true that some real tasty food is not healthy at all. But more often than not, stuff like butter, cheese, cream, chocolates, sweet substances and a whole lot of mouth watering stuff invariably contain very high fat content, which makes me restrain myself when I encounter some exotic stuff. The taste buds always crave something that is tangy, sweetish, full and teasing. I consider that a temptation and have to pull myself back from it, given that I don't have any big regimen in my daily routine to burn enough fat.

I'm agree with you.But perhaps you did't pay attention to food is healthy if you are great hungry.I think that we should consider the nice looking dish healthy for us or not before having dinnner.
