Buying books NEW?

I'm just wondering if anyone actually buys books new anymore. With thrift stores, online shops like Amazon or Thrift Books, free services like Paperback Swap and BookMooch, and of course second-hand book shops like Half Price Books, I'm wondering when you think it's necessary to buy a book NEW?
I tend to buy them the most at the thrift store, it's never more than $1 a book. I haven't been to a Barnes & Noble in years. If there's a newer book that I'm interested in reading, I'll usually put it on hold at the library, and wait a while, and then pick it up and so on.
I don't even know.. What is a NEW paperback book going for these days? Probably $20 new? It seems like such an unnecessary expense...
Do you ever buy books new? Or is it only for CERTAIN books?
If so, what books have you actually bought NEW because you just couldn't wait to read it?

Every book I buy is new, actually. To be fair, I don't buy many books, and when I do buy them I have to have a coupon, a sale, and if I buy them through Amazon I always must get free shipping to even consider the expense. I guess when you say $20.00 new you mean the bigger paperbacks? I've never spent that much for a book!
The most I've paid for a paperback is $7.99.
I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and that gives me a lot of trouble reading used books. If the spine is bent and has a crease, I can't read it. If the pages are yellowed and/or have an odd smell, I can't read it. If the pages have been turned down to mark the reader's spot or if someone has ever written in the book, I can't read it. I can go to used book stores with my husband (who buys nothing but used, and normally uses the library anyway), but I rarely find a book that I can actually pick up and read. I get ideas there, and sometimes I get lucky and find a book that looks new that I'm also interested in reading, but mostly I'm not so lucky.
So yes, I buy about 90% of my books new, but I'm also an extremely frugal person, so I'll go book shopping maybe once or twice a year with a limit of about $35, especially now that both big booksellers near my house are gone and out of business. I need to pick up a book, smell it, and read excerpts before I'll buy a book (odd but true, haha), and online shopping just doesn't cut it unless I have a list of books I made at a store that I'm already interested in.

The last time was about two months ago. I was on a ferry for an hour and a half ride. I was so bored that I had to get something. So I bought a book for $30. It wasn't a novel, but more of biography.
Anyway, I was so disappointed that when I got home I realized I could have downloaded the same book on my iPad for $17!
So, no new books for me from now on!

I buy a few new books, but in most cases I choose to borrow the books at the library or buy them in second hand shops. I read a lot and it would be much too expensive to buy every book that I want to read. I use the library a lot and I save a lot of money that way. Sometimes I only want to read the book once and in those cases I think that would be a waste of money to buy a new and expensive book in a bookshop.
In second hand bookshops I can find books that cost $1 or $2, so when I want to a buy a book I often buy it in a second hand bookshop, but it depends a bit on the type of book. When I need a travel guidebook, I don't visit the second hand shops, because they don't have the latest versions of the guidebooks. I want to make sure that my guidebook is up-to-date, so I only buy new guidebooks. They are more expensive than second hand books, but as an independent traveller it is important for me to get the the latest information.

Hi maezee! I buy new books when they are part of my collections. For example, I have been collecting Sidney Sheldon books ever since the first book came out, so when his new books come out, I tend to buy them new so I could add them to my library collections. For other books, I always love browsing through thrift shops and/or download free from the net. Actually i intend to buy a reader when I get the chance!

yeah, i still buy new books, especially the law books that i need for school, i prefer to have new books for law school, as the new ones are updated each year, and i keep a collection for the law books, because it is important for law students to have them. I also buy used books sometimes, especially in thrift stores because they have unique books that could not be found anywhere.

Books are becoming both cheaper and more expensive if that makes sense. The launching price of books seems to be increasing, well depending on the book, but then after a few months the prices seem to drop considerably. There are a lot of book fairs where I live where they sell older editions and reprints that although new they can be quite cheap, in particular the classics. The only time I end up buying new editions and paying full price is at Christmas because I tend to buy books as gifts, though this year I did buy less books, but I also received books too so I am still trying to finish those.

there are still books that are worthy to be bought. these are good books from our favorite authors. however, the economic conditions nowadays make us think twice to buy new ones or wait for a discounted price in thrift stores or online sales. i still buy books through book stores, but it has become very rare. but seeing a book in print always brings a certain satisfaction after reading it.
