I have a surprise for you! (says the hacker)

...is the word I got from a chat mate, whom I don’t remember anymore. I might have chatted with her years and years ago but maybe for one day only so I can't really remember her. I don’t even know whether this person is a guy or a girl.
For some time she has been greeting me whenever I come online; but I gave no reply. When I asked her today, she says her name’s Catherine and we talked a couple of months ago. She told me to check out her surprise for me and tell me if I like it. She also says she got hers and would be receiving another one soon. I just answered with a “thanks.” She again told me to check out the surprise as it works only today – it follows with the link.
I didn't check it. I don’t know her and I can’t even remember our conversation before. I just remember her YM id and that’s it. I am sure if I clicked the link, my account would get hacked. Even with friends I regularly chat with, I don’t click a link they sent me in YM chat. I normally try to check first whether I am chatting with my real friends and not some hacker. Have you been surprised recently – and then got hacked?

Wow, I can't believe you even talked to her..Whenever I get an uninvited IM, especially from someone I don't know, I immediately reported them.

Nope actually it's not an uninvited IM. I have her YM Id for several years already. And I remember chatting with her before when I was active with chatting before. But I don't remember what we chat about before or any other information about her. I have been seeing her YM being visible too but I never tried to reply or initiate a chat with her. It is just today when I tried asking her again to remind myself about who that person is.
Whenever I get uninvited PM or someone requested me to add them up on YM - I rejected them and most of the time report them and blocked them.

Sorry I got you confused... I didn't know her much because she was a chatmate only. I was into chatting before as I have said. But I don't ask for a lot of personal details to most of them and just discontinue chatting.
She was in my list as she added me a long year ago and I accepted her friend request. So she can see me online, and I can see her online too even though there were no communication anymore. Until that day.

I've been having problems with my Yahoo email too, it appears to be hacked. My friends and even my office email has been receiving emails from my email even though I was not sending them. It all started when I open an email similar to what you received. I just immediately opened the email and the virus scanner immediately alarmed - the e-mail forwarded to me has a virus!
Because of that, I refrain from opening my yahoo email and opted to use my gmail account more. I feel bad because I've been using my yahoo mail for more than a decade already. :-(

I regularly don´t chat, and, when I do, is only with people I know I can trust, but, I must say that I am not as careful as you are, I think that I have been lucky so far, but if I am talking with someone suspicious, or if I get a mail from someone I don´t know, I do not open. Sometimes I receive messages from "friends", but, only with seeing the subject of the message, I know it is not them who are writing, and I delete right away.

I chat sometimes, but I never do to strangers, so, I can open links freely because is people I can trust. Sometimes, I get mail, supposedly from friends, but, only seeing the subject, and the way they speak, I know it is not from them, so, I delete immediately.

Yeah I am not into chatting anymore... although I still chat with people I know. Yeah in mails too I usually delete it without opening it especially if I know it is from someone whos not my friend, And most of the time if it has no subject and from friends that I dont regularly send email.

Hello ifa,
So I guess starting today, you need to be very careful. But I guess you are not into chatting or just adding anyone to your personal messenger. But with your friends just try to check first whether you are talking with a real friend and not a hacker. Sometimes they disguised as your real friend, there are some things you and your friend will only know so try to ask a lot of questions until you are satisfied you are chatting with a real friend.

I keep losing my account in Hotmail, always forgetting my login details, both the name and password
So I never got the chance to know what this facility is.

Must be very careful.
I seldom open my chat messenger.
I am not fond with chatting.
I only open it when I am going to chat with my family.

Hello jai
I opened my YM everyday at least for a few hours just to chat with friends for important things. And most of the time make myself invisible to anyone. It was just lately when I made it visible. So some of my old chatmates from years and years ago started sending me messages. Most of them I ignored. Don't know what caused me to reply on her.

i am such a naive if someone told me to do so
and i am a type an easy believe in person
no doubt if i am the one who chat with her my account would get hacked
