Hi celtie,
Yes, that is wonderful. World wide animal cruelty is has risen to such an extent that many species have become extinct. And some are struggling with a few of them left alive.
Every year 5 to 10 one horned rhinos are being killed for their horns in Assam, India at the "Kaziranga National Park". You must have heard that this is the only National park in the world where you get to see one horned rhinos.
The punishment to the guilty should, in my opinion, be equal to a man murdering a man.

Ya, the assinine reasons these animals are being kills. I think back to the scene in Dancing with Wolves when the indians and the soldier come over the hill and find the field of skinned buffaloe. Money talks. And what of the circle of life. If these creeps don't understand anything but what affects them and on no other level then think of that. If you kill off the animals these creeps(and us)are doomed. Common sense? Do they even have any of that? I will shush up now. I could go on for pages.

I am overjoyed at this news. It is about time that the monsters who are cruel to animals do not get away with it.
I still think Vick 'one of the heavyweights' in dogfighting (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2884063 ) and his dog fighting past should not be allowed to play football again and be a source of admiration...

I have not heard of any law like this upto now at least in my country but i certainly welcome it and hope all countries in the world pass it.There is so much of cruelty done to animals that it is very necessary that very stringent laws are enacted and harsh punishment is meted out.Due to Man`s excesses so many animal and bird species have been wiped out and many are on the verge of extinction. So this is a good thing that has been done.

It just went on the books yesterday. I agree about the verge of extinction. Doesn't look like much is going to be done about it either.

I think its about time. There was a story on the news the other night where a guy had tied and dragged a dog down the street behind his truck and there was barely anything left of the poor creature. It lived and they nursed it back to health though. The guy was going to court over it. I bet he was happy that law wasn't in effect that moment.

Oh yuck! Poor dog! Something I didn't explain very well is that the fifteen years is the amount of time the prosecutors can go back and prosecute past occurences so maybe this guy will be prosecuted under this law.

It's so funny that I came across your discussion today. I was just watching the news this evening and they had a story on about horses that were taken from a farm near by for neglect. There were 8 horses taken but one had to be put down because it was too far gone. They hadn't been fed or given water. I was ticked because the way it sounded they knew these horses were being neglected but couldn't do anything about it till now. When they found them a few were in the mud and the one they had to put down couldn't get up at all. A few others really couldn't get up either but so far they are still alive. I really hope they punish the people who had them.

I think I will feel a wee bit better knowing that this law is in force. And it is good for FIFTEEN years. I was so thrilled to here this and usually I don't care to even listen to the news. Time to celebrate. With it going back that far the courts might be busier.

Although I am glad the cruelty of any kind is being punished it makes me sad to think that the harming of an animal get a person up to 15 years and yet I have seen people go to jail for the same to children for less then two.

No. The law is retroactive or whatever. They can go back fifteen years to catch old cases. Gotta love that. I don't know what kind of sentences they will get but it being a felony it should be afew.

Nowadays, more and more people abhor cruelty to animals,I am not surprised someone was sentenced to fifteen years in prison.
