reusing paper coffee filters

Someone mentioned reusing a paper coffee filter. I honestly have never thought about this. I've always figured the 200 count package was cheap enough and lasted my hubby a good year or so that it was a deal for $1 or half a cent per filter. I do take them with the grounds and dump them in my compost or flower beds. I don't actually drink coffee but my hubby does and I don't think he'd dig reusing a paper one, if you want a reusable buy a reusable filter from the get go I'm sure he'd say.
Have you ever done this?

I use to do that, but I found the second time around, the filter has lost its shape and coffee grounds get into the coffee making what I call, "chewy coffee" I don't like chewy coffee, so I talked to a neighbor who let me borrow one of her reusable coffee filters. It is made of muslin and they can be bought online, but I am thinking of just purchasing the material and making my own..

It isn't just any fabric, but muslin, like this: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&rh=n%3A12899121%2Cp_n_material_browse%3A378540011&page=1#/ref=sr_st?qid=1330696661&rh=i%3Aarts-crafts%2Cn%3A12899121%2Cp_n_material_browse%3A378540011&sort=price
I also would want to get the natural one, not the bleached one, because I tend to stay away from bleach products if I can..

I've known them to make them out of a very fine mesh but I've not heard of a fabric one. Interesting will have to keep that in mind when we need to get a reusable.

The filters are cheap enough so I just toss them in the trashcan. I have heard filters are good for cleaning things around the house. I have had to use a paper towel when the filters were gone and I forgot to buy more. It works ok but makes the drip slower because of the thickness.

Thanks for the good emergency tip in case we are ever in dire need for a filter :0)

I have tried this, even though the paper filters are so cheap, but the coffee didn't taste right. When you use a paper filter the hot water deposits oils from the coffee onto the paper and they can stick to it even though you rinse it and become rancid within hours. That taste transfers to the new batch of coffee you make and, for me, ruins the taste. I'd rather enjoy my coffee than save half a cent or less by re-using the filter!
I have a re-usable filter but washing it is too much an inconvenience. I believe in saving pennies but not to the point of aggravation.

I don't know much about coffee (since I'm not the coffee drinker in the house) but I always learn some new tidbit from you Dragon!

Just don't use paper filters! I'm a bit of a coffee nut, but I never use paper filters. You can get ones made of metal, or what almost seems like a cloth, that can be used and reused, over and over again. You just have to dump the old beans out, give the filter a rinse, and it's perfect to use, again. I find the coffee tastes better with those filters, and you never have to throw out the paper ones.

I don“t use filters at all. I went back to my childhood, fefore filters and disposable (?) things came into beings and have now a cotton filter. I took a picture of it so you can see it. It was the kind of coffee filter we had way back when.
I also throw the coffee grounds to the garden and wash the cloth with the hose. The last rinse is at the kitchen.

I don't drink a lot of coffee so I actually ended up getting a Keurig coffee maker for Christmas because I will typically only drink one cup of coffee on the days that I drink coffee, so it would be a huge waste for me to make an entire pot of coffee. However, my mother is a big coffee drinker and she has reused paper filters for as long as I can remember. On the first day she will put in two tablespoons of coffee grounds and add an addition one tablespoon of coffee grounds each morning for two more mornings. Not only does it save money on the filters, it also saves money on the cost of the coffee grounds as well.

No, actually, I use them to clean and to do art projects with kids. Your time is worth more than that half cent. I think that falls under the category "penny wise and pound foolish"

No, I'm with you, it's not worth the savings since it doesn't cost that much in the first place.

I don't drink coffee, but I do use coffee filters!!! Back when I had to go into the office every day, I was normally the first one in & I made coffee for the office & NEVER ever thought to reuse the filter...That sounds gross to me!!!
I use coffee filters around my house. They are GREAT for absorbing excess fat from bacon, french fries, hamburger patties, etc. They also work well as a dish cover in the microwave as they stop any splatter. I buy them from the dollar store & get 200 for a dollar. That's cheaper than paper towels, Using them as I do, I see NO need to reuse!!!

I don't know about that but if your short of cash, paper towel can also be used as filter!

yes my family drinks alot of coffee so we always end up re-using paper coffee filters so we dont go through them too fast because once we do we tend to get a little cranky when we dont have our coffee cause all the filters were used up, so we re-use like the first one in the morning for us all to get our first cup of coffee from it then change it out later in the day its actually a good way to save money too.
