Which is the better? the more people on food stamps or the more people who can provide for themselves and DON'T need food stamps... And which will work better for the longest time?

Food stamps are just temporaly, so I recieve them. I'm a fulltime college student, I work and have a teenage in high school and college. when I'm able to to get off i will, once my income is at least $2000 a month or more. After making that load of income I'll be able to buy my own food.

Welcome to myLot! You are a perfect example of someone the program was intended for. You are working to better yourself and will eventually be independent, contributing taxes to fund education and help your community. Food stamps for those like you is an investment, a hand up instead of a handout. I hope you enjoy it here and "meet" lots of new friends from all over the world.

It is always better if we can provide what we need and don't depend in others and be responsible :)

The money for food stamps and other programs comes from the taxes of the people. The more people on these programs, the more taxes it takes from the working folk. Eventually these programs will eat up all the taxes, taxes will increase and more and more people will be required to work to supply the programs with money. But the more on programs, the fewer workers. Eventually the money pot will dry up because... People on programs will spend money, it's true. But that money is limited by the programs and when the time of month comes that it is gone, there is no more. And no more spending. A set amount of money spent by those people will not allow businesses to profit, only remain at the same level of profit or break-even. And as the people are taxed more to accommodate the increase of people on programs, they have less money to spend. Eventually they will spend no more than they have to in order to keep afloat. They will begin to spend their savings and eventually be unable to pay their mortgages, falling into foreclosure and reneging on their debts. The companies that fostered those debts will will eventually go bankrupt, their employees losing their jobs and going on food stamps and other programs. This will go one until the country is totally bankrupt and a smoking ruin of what it once was. Whoever says it that increasing the number of people on food stamps is a good thing is nuts. The more people can't take care of themselves, the poorer the nation is and the deeper we will sink into debt and ruin. Some people truly need these programs, like the person who is in school, working and needs some help--they intend to support themselves and are working to achieve that goal. In that case it is an investment. The ones who remain on the programs for generations are being cheated. And we are all being cheated when someone says that unemployment checks and food stamps are good for the economy.

"This will go on until the country is totally bankrupt and a smoking ruin of what it once was." - I am SO glad I am not the only one who takes these things seriously!!

I believe government stifles business and enterprise so government can be caretaker, with thus ever more and more things and resources under their control. Whereas free enterprise keeps them in many hands. Government just naturally wants to grow.. and grow..

Food stamps are re-checked annually or every six months I don't remember. It is always better to be able to provide for yourself. But, when the employment is like it is nice to have the food stamps. I try to stress that Food stamps and such things are TEMPORARY. I used know of families that were generations welfare families and this one woman would have another child and another so her welfare check went up. If people didn't abuse the system and make it hard for others then we would be better off. I have had to ask for help from the government afew times down through the years and I am glad that there is Food stamps available for people going through a tough time. But I think some people get lazy and want to just set back and live on welfare. I think being responsible and trying to work and keeping a good income coming in is the norm and what people want to do. But when times are tough it good to be able to get help.

Absolutely! I'm very happy, and proud that my country does this.. it's the abuses, and I think mainly of administration abuses, that have to go. But then again, how great if all abuses would go. It would free up so much money to do what it's supposed to do!

That is so very true. I doubt we will live to see it happen.

Food stamps are not a way of life for the average person nor should they be. They are for those who need help getting back on their feet, or who cannot care for themselves for some reason financially. I do not say this as some conservatives who makes loads of money I say this as someone who has been on food stamps and was thankful they where there at the time. I would not though stay on the indefinitely. We are capable of supporting our selves and should and do so.

I think it would be better to be able to provide for yourself and your family. It would be nice if this was possible for everyone to do. It gives a person more confidence and self esteem to know that they are able to make and earn enough money to be self sufficient. It is sad that are system and the way it works is so backwards at times. Especially when it comes to a families income.

This is not a serious question, right? Who would pay for the food stamps if everyone was on them? Where does the government get "its" money to buy food for people? (Believe it or not, some highschoolers were asked that and didn't know.)

The real sad part of this is, that there are hundreds of people that are taking advantage of this 'handout', and never make an effort to support themselves, and abuse the system that is for people that really only need a temporary helping hand!

We have a municipality nearby to us which has had a lot of money abuse questions asked and reported on.. taxpayers paying for parties.. and a lot of waste of money on day to day things for those running the city and running programs.. it's also reported on (but shouted down) that there's expensive abuses built into the system like cadillac retirements and what not for these same 'workers'.. even the ability to be retired, draw full retirement, and go back to work for the same office and get draw a wage, and with a new retirement and pension building up.. and there's something about so many sick days allowed but if you don't use them you get paid full pay for them anyway (taxpayer's expense of course) and some other things like this..

I can't believe this question. People like me are working at a job and providing not for my own family, but paying the taxes that provide for others. And to have people ask like this, who is using the taxes to provide for themselves. This is so stupid. If there were not people like me, there would not be any funding for the people on food stamps. Is this a sign of how stupid people have become and indoctrinated to the left and the laziness, dependency the left has placed on the government, and on people like me who are actually paying for this. People, try your best to get jobs and get off from items like food stamps. It hurts everyone when you use them when you do not have to. Food stamps are a safety-net that can be used when the need arise, but they are meant to be only temporary, and the people needs to improve themselves so to get off from them, and then pay back into the system themselves. If everyone was on food stamps, everything would cease to work, and we would be living hand to mouth from our own gardens and food sources.

flowerchilde..I think it's always better to be able to provde for oneself. Food stamps are necessary for some and should be available as a safety net. The real problem as I understand it is the waste and abuse in the food stamp program...

Sometimes I think I've become a conspiracy buff in some ways, then at other times I just think it's in the nature of programs and government to grow.. and keep growing, and it can most easily do this by becoming caretaker.. but it seems logical to me that it could so easily become a trend of caretaking always on the rise until the demand becomes greater than what's available (mostly taxes).. Then I wonder if there's a point where it's no longer possible to turn the trend around.. I'm actually an optimist!!

Good is if you are raised to take care of yourself. If you have enough self esteem to believe in yourself and make te best out of your life, the way you like it, without any regrets. Doing good is what really makes you feel good without any regret, if you are able to give by the heart. Not when you give because you feel forced to or feel pity or because tax will pay you back the money. Reality is that many people who get money easily are not willing to work anymore since begging, scamming, blackmailing etc is a way easier way to make money. If this is good for the self esteem is an other question. I think there is nothing wrong to take care of those who are not able too, no matter if this is done by an individual person or society. But it's good to find out first what the effect of this will be and if it's really needed.

Hello, flowerchilde. It is my hope people can get off of food stamps. I was on them for 6 months after I got out of prison. I think that it would be great if the government had it set up where people facing unemployment, or people in my old situation, or women who are single parents get it for a short time. But after that they would have to get into programs where they can maybe work at home, so they will not have to be seperated from their children. It is a good program for a short time, but in the long run people tend to depend on it, and stop looking for ways out. I guess that there needs to be a ballance. I am sure that it has alot to do with the mentality of the people. Thank you for your post. I hope that you have a great day. :) :)
