Taking Pictures in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Olivos, CA

My husband had to go to Ventura today, and leave two hours before my normal getting up time. He wanted me to go. I wanted to have time to take pictures on the trip. So I said I'd go if he took me out for lunch, let me take pictures wherever I wanted after lunch (he was to finish his business before lunch), and filled my car with gas after we got back home. He agreed, so we took our first trip out to have some fun after our respective bouts with flu. Wish I had space here to share a sampling of all we did, but I thought you might like the beach picture best. All I did was stop to take pictures there for my zazzle store. That was the purpose of most of today's pictures, but some I keep on file in case I need them to illustrate my writing. So I took 317 pictures.
The first ones were looking down over Santa Barbara from Highway 154. Then, while Hubby met the prospective tenant at our building, I walked around the residential area near the high school and took pictures of flowers, Ventura High, and some very interesting houses. As usual, I wished I could wave a magic wand and make all the electric and phone wires disappear for a few minutes. But I couldn't. One very interesting house with a very interesting tree in front had heavy wires over the front and both sides. It almost looked as though it were wrapped with wires.
After Hubby was through with the interview and had the application in hand, we went to lunch. It wasn't very good. I could have held out for a better place, but I was hungry, so went along with the closest place.
The first stop was the beach you see here. We stopped just so I could take pictures.
The next stop was Santa Barbara. Never go to Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon on the first nice day of the season. It was CROWDED. First we were going to park at the beach, but that was $7.00, so we decided to find the bird sanctuary I went to 20 years ago or more. At least parking was free there. I haven't had time to look at all the pictures yet, but I hope I got some of the birds -- not just the lake and vegetation. The big thing was that we went for our first walk since we've been sick. That is remarkable, since we haven't been up to really exercising for about two weeks. So that was nice.
After that we went to the mission to take pictures. Bad idea. All kinds of people were there taking pictures -- mostly of other people taking pictures. You just couldn't' get any pictures that didn't have people in them. For Zazzle you can't have recognizable faces. I wanted to get the fountain in front of the mission, but one family was using it as a bench. The boy, instead of sitting with his mother and siblings, insisted on walking around and around the fountain, so it was hard to get a picture without faces.
When I wanted to photograph the large cross memorial to Father Serra, there were two women taking each other's pictures in front of the cross in the other direction. When I wanted a picture of the front of the church, what looked like a professional photographer had his camera set up on a tripod right in the center of what I wanted a picture of. He was photographing a young lady in a very dressy black dress. I would have thought it was a bride, except there was no one there but her. I then wished we'd just walked in the park we discovered on the way to the mission. We gave up and got back on the freeway.
We took 154 through the pass by Cachuma Lake. I stopped once at a vista to get a few pictures of the mountains and then stopped again in Los Olivos to take pictures of different kinds of terrain. I found some horses that seemed quite happy to pose for me. They were very beautiful horses.
By this time the sun was about to set, so the next stop was to try to get some sunset pictures. That didn't go as well, but I won't know until I see the results. All in all it was quite a busy but varied day with scenery, exercise, and some good pictures.
Now that I've reported to you, I will look at the rest of the pictures. I really get excited when I've come home with a full camera. I want to see how they turned out -- especially the ones where I shot blindly because the light was reflecting off the screen. How do you feel when you are about to unload your camera ?

You drive a hard bargain. I love driving on 154. I love to stop and take pictures, too. Usually I have more than I have time to deal with, but out of every hundred or so there are 4 or 5 keepers. I used not to like to take pictures until they came up with these awesome digital cameras. My smart phone has an 8 meg camera with all sorts of amazing features.
Have you eaten at the Odyssey World Cafe in Paso Robles?

I wanted to stop in more places on 154, but every time I saw a place to pull over, I was past it. You don't slow down on 154 on Sunday afternoon without people behind you getting very upset.
I have eaten at Odyssey, but only once. I forget who I went with, but she didn't want to go there again. It might have been my mom. I rather enjoyed it, but have no one to go with.

I belong to a few FB Zazzle groups... I also sold one a few weeks ago.. just 12 hours after I made.. I have NEVER done that before... :) it's so exciting..
I love taking pictures of flowers and trees and nature.. (birds bees butterflies caterpillars) and of course my cats and dogs.
I too don't like crowds.. I have gone to some parks with flowers in bloom and it is annoying to have to wait or miss altogether that perfect shot because of all the people walking through your shot.
I tend to like to crop a lot of photos because of that.
will send those links..

What did you try in your editing that was new? I've never sold anything after being posted only four days. Do you belong to the Zazzlers group on Facebook? Why don't you PM a link to me of the product that sold?
I got a lot of flower shots today. The trees around Cachuma Lake are in bloom and so are all the fruit trees at home. Even our apricot has blossoms this year. In Ventura Lots of people had blooming flowers, including some lovely hollyhocks. I wanted to go to the botanical gardens in Santa Barbara, but I think I'll come back with a block of time to spend there in the afternoon on a week day. It would be less crowded.

I seldom take that many at once, but if I have taken them for a purpose, it is really a matter of obscurity and anticipation. I am thinking about a zazzle store, but I have not gotten around to doing so. Would you send me a pm with a link to yours? I have a particular themed idea that I have got pictures for. I believe it would be a nice addition to my online activity.

I normally take my camera everywhere, but I thought I wouldn't need it yesterday at farmers market and I was wrong. A lady was singing kids songs and she had a lovely voice. She had two mikes. As the crowd gathered, she would offer the little ones the smaller mike and let them sing along while their parents took videos. I would have loved to get a video of that. Some really belted it out, and others were very shy. But the lady sold lots of her CDs and got lots of tips. Hope she comes again. I couldn't find a business card and didn't want to interrupt her. I wondered if she might have been a preschool teacher recruiting new students, or maybe someone who does children's parties.
We'll see about the horses. I haven't edited them yet. I have some other stuff I have to do first
I think my sleeping pill is kicking in and my fingers are about to stop working. I ahve to get up early again tomorrow to meet a delivery man at the other house. But that's a whole other story. If it goes bad, you'll hear about it.

Hi Barb!
That was too many pictures you took! There must have been too many wonderful scenery where you went.
I get excited when I'm about to unload pictures from my camera. Like when we attended my friend's wedding last December, we took so many pictures, I think it's more than 300 pictures like yours! It was so many that it took me a long time to upload it to my computer! I also took a long time uploading it to Facebook. Took me twice because I had to upload it by batch because it's just too many and I had to select the good ones that I can upload.
It's really good that they have invented the digital camera. There's no limit as to how many pictures we can make.

I don't know what is Zazzle but you probably can learn more about horses in the internet. This reminds me of a myLotter who knows a lot about horses. She was pregnant when she replied to my discussion and she still rides horses in her condition! She grew up riding horses and I am just amazed with her experiences. I forgot her username.
Well, editing softwares are really popular these days. Good luck with that. I don't have the patience for it.

Many pictures, but not too many pictures. I'm finally starting to make them into Zazzle products today. I sure wish I knew more about horses so I could tag them properly, but I'll start another discussion about that. I agree that the digital camera and editing software are the best things to happen in photography.

What a wonderful trip and very worthy of a ton of pictures. I absolutely love to come home with a ton of pictures and go directly to see how they have turned out. Sometimes I even look through them on the way home because I can't wait.
Your discussion makes me ready for a roadtrip!

It was fun. I got more tired today hanging out at the other house all day waiting for a delivery that never came. It's more fun to be out seeing things and taking pictures on my feet, that sorting stuff in a garage while waiting for a shipment all day. Hope you get to take your roadtrip soon. Where would you most like to go?

Sounds like you had a lovely day out. I got out for a bit yesterday, too, but although it was sunny, there were strong winds making it frickin' cold out.

Well I love this part of California, for many years I was there often visiting relatives and just enjoying the coast. I know how you feel about your pictures, we use the type of camera where you can view your pics. as soon as they are taken, then delete if not wanted. It does kind of take the suspense out of the whole thing.

But, Pat, I enjoy the suspense. I enjoy the anticipation. I could look when I shoot them, but it runs down the battery and the screen is too small to feel their power. There's nothing like getting them on my IMAC larger than life, in some cases.

Oh my goodness, that sounds like the kind of day that I would like to have. I love taking pictures of things that are really interested. Of course, my being a mother of small children, the vast majority of the pictures that I take are pictures of the children and of their friends. However, when I have the opportunity I like to take different pictures of wildlife.
I really didn't have the opportunity to do that last year because of the fact that my husband was so sick for most of the year.

I can relate to that. When you have children, you want to take their pictures, no matter where you go. Now that I'm writing and on Zazzle, I wish I'd taken more shots of just scenery. I did take some I could scan that were pretty good, but I wish I had more with no people, since pictures with recognizable faces can't be published without photo releases. But when you have children and the Internet as we know it today doesn't exist yet, you are interested only in preserving memories, not selling photos or using them on print-on-demand sites. A sick husband can put a damper on travel. I'm glad we had our day Sunday, since Hubby hurt himself again last night and we had another trip to the ER to get his leg stitched in almost the same place he had his laceration a couple of months ago.

It sounds like to had a pretty good time. And you did seem to take lots of pictures. I like the beach picture a lot. It looks real serene. It also seemed like a busy day. Thats good sometimes. I will look forward to some of your other pictures. I really need to start going around and taking some pictures to use in my posts here. Enjoy.

Well when it comes to scenery, there is not much of that here in NYC. But I could take pictures of some of Brooklyn. And all the types of people here in Brooklyn as well. I do have some pictures that I took while I was driving back from P.A. about a year ago. I will post them up here. I will start a new discussion and put a few of them in there.
