Have you ever experience like eating something and then remembering some distant past or someone in your past? Well for me sometimes..... it happened last week when I cooked a Patatim (A slowly braised pork legs cooked in oystersauce, soysauce, peppercorn, star anise, water, pineapple juice and served with blanched cabbage.) I used an additional rice wine and chilli flakes to the dish while its cooking, after it was done I called my family to eat for dinner and served it in a Chinese platter (almost Chinese exactly). When I start to eat I first tasted the dish and I suddenly remember a dish my Lola would make when I was just 7 it was like a sweet soft pork dish similar to what I made.My mom then told me the Patatim tasted just the same as what my grandma makes it almost moved me to tears because she is a great grandmother and she died to early when i was 10. Also I have this incident where I was eating a pistachio flavored gelato in Cagayan. There was a sudden surge or memory of my crush in highschool while eating the gelato I don't even know whats the reason or maybe its the pack of chocolate covered pistachio he gave me when i transferred to another school...Lol

Aromas can bring us back to another time. Scents we don't even remember some how subconciously we do recall the scent. For me it is my grandmother's roast beef and the chicken soup she always had simmering on the back of the stove. Such a definite smell.

I can relate to you .I do have that feeling when eating food. Maybe because I love eating. The first time I ate special Lomi of lucky me, it immediately reminded me of the Lomi I ate when I was a child. My father used to order Lomi for take out in a nearby restaurant for our dinner, the feeling is very nostalgic. It has been awhile since i tasted it because the restaurant closed down. I guess we do associate the food we ate with the memories in the past. Sometimes it is the food that brings us together.

That hasn't happened to me because of food but I do remember walking through a department store and a woman walked past me and her perfume reminded me of a school teacher I had years before that...

Yup..sometimes I try to cook something my mother made and it just doesn't taste the same or sometimes it does and it reminds me so much of my mother....she was an excellent cook...and I sometimes stumble on something that reminds me of what she cooked up for us.

Oh, yes, definitely. There are really some dishes that remind me of specific people or events in the past especially the dishes that I had when I was a kid. And when I have them now, I somewhat immediately remember the good and simple life I had when I was younger. And the thing is these dishes aren't anything spectacular. They're really everyday dishes that almost anyone can cook. Hmm, patatim, huh? That's high in cholesterol.

I often get food nostalgia when eating in a restaurant because our family had favorite eating places that we always patronize on special occasions for a couple of generations, so it's mostly remembering family members like my dad and grandfather or other family members who are not with us anymore. I also get it when eating foods we ate with my wife and children when they were still very, I see the kids and how they have grown up already.
