Changes in Charice's look

charice pempengco - international singing star
Philippines

Hello Lotters, There's been a lot of very rude and criticisms about her new look. to be honest i was shock to see such look which was completely not new and same like every one else who wants to feel like a real star. some people believe she's changed and speaks English even in our country when she could have been nice enough for her to speak tagalog at least. Maybe she's forgotten that her old looks symbolize of her Filipina-ness for all Filipina out there. that old look of hers was even better and more unique. though I don't want to criticize since it's her right..maybe it would have been better if she explain it clearly what made the sudden change. well, she does look like Korea now

she is trying to look racially ambigious, which means an appearance that is relatable to all races. her best way to succeed is to have more foreign fans that filipino fans. I hope no one will be offended with what I will say but some of her filipino faqns are the reason why she cant get mainstreamenough in the US despite of the exposures. They didnt know comments like "she is a filipino" "she makes me proud to be a filipino" and "filipinos are the best" alienates many foreigners to like her cos some Filipinos keeps on claiming her. we never heard Rihanna's fans from barbados spamming her videos with "she is from Barbados" "proud to be carribean" stuff. I actually think its a management marketing purpose to make her speak english here. so some filipino fans may try to distance from her and her management can market her to the western market. The "charice vs bianca ryan" video which is uploaded by filipino fans alienated many Americans already and we know that US is her target market.

@CaptAlbert, I agree with you, claiming Filipino artists who are able to break into international market sometimes becomes a "turn-off" and it drags the artist down rather than up, because claiming is done a little "over the top". Whatever we see in Charice right now is probably a part of her marketing strategy and we should just wait and see if it works.

You got a point there and I never really thought of it in that manner. Never knew such comments would cost an impact but I guess you're right. Of course we cannot stop our fellowmen who are proud of her but I think there should be some control over it too. Thanks for the feedback. Come to think of it, who cares if she is a Filipino or not as long as she can sing and is continuously sharing good music for all of us. I guess the mentality is due to Filipino's "branding" culture. Best example would be, all toothpaste in the country is called Colgate by the majority even though that certain toothpaste is actually of a different brand.

because thats the rule for international success, getting US is the most important aspect on crossingover to the world. If you got US, you instantly get the world but you cannot get fame there if your country keeps on claiming you. if you want international fans, no country must claim you. you should be the world's property not your country's property.

I really don't like her new look. We can't do anything about it cause it is her choice but as a public figure, you can't really avoid criticism.

Hello mspitot, I can't help not liking the new look but i guess she's also going for the new trends now and some of us aren't use it and i am not used to it, not even over with her previous look. but we gotta understand it, she's just experimenting it

I read that it is inspired by the game final fantasy cause she was chosen to sing a song for that game.

Never really cared about her looks and before never really cared about her singing but after I've heard of the song "louder" I liked it and the first time I heard it I thought an American artist is singing the song. Got a smile on my face when I found out that it was Charice who sang it. Anyway on her looks, well I still need more time to get used to her new looks because I wasn't able to recognized her at first. Again I don't care about the look though as long as she continuously shares or give us good music.

Hello Hexeduser, I did listen to it and it was great but I've been amazed her singing. yeah, i was a bit surprised myself, and others are indeed reacting to it.i couldn't recognize her from it and i wonder why she didn't like her other self maybe they should asked her for that if she is interviewed.

We can never tell what's going on in her mind and what she plans to do in the future but we should support her and buy her albums if we want to help her succeed.

Change is the permanent thing in this world. She, indeed is not excuse for changes. That's the reality in life. Example, a Filipino want to change their skin complexion by applying whitening lotions, creams, etc. On the other hand, "whites" from other countries like to exposed themselves under the sun to get tan. As well as the other looks, most of us tried to imitate our idols by copying their hair style, the way they dress, etc. Another is that, she might feel that she is not that fame anymore especially here in the Philippines so she has to make some explosive changes to make her controvesial and become talk of the town.

Hello asdomencil, You're right and this time i havent thought of that much on charice, how selfish of me change is permanent and good thing is that she made a decision to experiment, i think she is still famous to boot

Yes especially in other countries she is still famous. Now, in her own country, she is famous because of critisms about her look and the way she talked wherein she doesn't even use our language.

I think it's fine for her to change her looks. I mean for a young girl to always have the same hair fashion would be a lot boring. I think its an expression that she just have to make changes or she'll get stuck with her young and naive looks. Charice is a big star and she needs to live up to being looked up on. Look at what her looks have done. People turned back their heads and was amazed or to some disgusted LOL! She's got to make news because for a while the Filipinos have not seen her around. It's just the look and packaging that has changed so I really don't mind. Just because she changed her looks doesn't mean that she is no longer a Filipina in her heart. She knows she is and will always stay a Filipino.

Hello Ajsmom, I think she is still young and the old look is even more MATURE looking than her looks now, which is different from any one else. i have seen some celebrity singers in malaysia and indonesia, most star studded ones never change at all and stick to their usual looks. indeed we are too much western influenced. have a nice day

Many really did notice of Charice' new hair look not just here in the Philippines but also around the world. She really look different now. In facebook there is a picture of her and Mavericks being compared. They really look the same because of the style of the hair and its color.

Hello Cearn, Well, a lot people can be very very creative in terms of seeing people change their looks. though we can complain that she's trying to be a copy cat like, but this is her decision and all we have to do is respect her for that. even though she is acting like some one that really change since she got exposed too much in the US. have a nice day.

I also respect what she wants to do in her life. I have nothing to do about it in the first place. I must say that with her stay in the United States and some parts, she was also greatly influenced. It is just some people would like to make some dirty comments with regards to her new look.

Image is important for every new born star for popularity and commercialization purposes. An entertainer must embrace a whole new outlook to be in the competitive world of entertainment. Talent alone is not enough to mesmerize the world audience. Should she remain a plain jane she would be overshadowed by others who are more glamorous to keep up with their artists status.
• Philippines
17 Mar 12
Hello zandi, I think her old looks still proved the best, but it was her choice she said to have a different outlook instead.still not convinced but i understand if the managers and handlers wants her that kind of look. I do remember seeing a malaysian star that never changed her looks and still has the glamerous spark of the people
• Philippines
12 Mar 12
I totally agree with you. For a star to continue to shine, people should continue to notice and talk about her. The best way to get noticed is to change one's image or look. I think Charice loves this new look since this is more in tune to her boyish ways. However, I think this decision was not made by Charice but by those people who are handling her career. The reason to Madonna and Lady Gaga's success is largely because of their constant effort to reinvent themselves. Growth and evolution of artists are necessary to prevent public boredom.

I think she want to portray a different Charice, that is why she changes something in her looks. But I don't see her beautiful in that new looks I prefer the former Charice looks than to day. Because she really symbolize a Filipina girl...

19 Mar 12
Hello Aerous, Same here I don't see that unique pretty Filipina looks on her and instead she chose to be the Korean look a like Kpop singer. but in this scenario i think she wanted to be a fan of every one and probably making her own statement that she would also want to have foreigner fans other than her own people. Have a nice day.

That is one of the problem of our fellow artist. When they reach the peak of success it seems they forget where they came from. Better for them to stay look as a Filipina or as pinoy(short for Filipino) to be proud of not being imitated other countries,looks...

About a few years ago Charice became a household name not only here in the Philippines but even in America. But after her joining Glee she just sort of started to fade away. Probably her looks now is a way of re-packaging herself to make her more noticeable globally and not just in the Philippines or in Asia. If that will help boost her international career then I guess her handlers are making a good decision.

17 Mar 12
Hello doryvien, She said that it was her choice from the start or had been thinking about her hair getting cut. I wonder how long these international tours of hers will last, she's currently being seen in her Asian tours. not sure if handlers are helping her that much with out being criticize

In my own opinion Charice' look is the one hindrance why she didn't make it big in her own country before she was given a chance by Ellen Degeneres. Let's all accept the fact that she's not a looker. In a place where everyone is looking and expecting someone to have a Caucasian look for them to make it big in Showbiz. There was one time where she was interviewed by Boy Abunda and he said something about her being a "monay" or a bun, which is true to some degree. That's how harsh people can be with their critism until you prove them wrong. Charice overcome all those. In fairness, Charice looked different as you said, she looked like a more of a Korean , but I won't take it against her personally. Whether she's becoming more American by the way she speaks, or more Korean by the way she looks, that's her choice. Bottom line is those are not the things that made Charice what she is right now. What made her famous is her voice. She could change her looks but as long as she sing that way she does then she will always be Charice.

Hello ybong, I agree i guess from now on it would be her and her alone and not because she's a filipina and coming from the philippines.just like our fellow friend back down there, she also needs to win the hearts of the people in US if she is going to be more popular there

She already won the hearts of people in the US, and I think she owes much of it to Ellen and Oprah. The US is also her main target market so it's imperative that she speaks english with the right twang . Artists really tend to experiment with their looks and also get away with it since that's not what's important. Style and fashion keep changing so changing looks is as easy as changing your clothes. I'm sure, a few weeks from now, she'll have another look again.

I really don't mind the way she look. That doesn't surprise me at all. She looks totally different I think and yeah she doesn't look like a Filipino anymore. She chose that, she loves that! If she's confident with the way she looks then she's ok.

Hello Toni, Yes she looks totally different, I believe the Japanese Musical Artist started that kind of hair due because of the DBZ mania, since the super saiya-jin hair style seemed cool, that's been hairstyle of any Asian Singer now a days, added by the koreans. now, even Charise is following the trend. have a nice day

Just like you Toni , i don't mind the way she look. In fact, i like it for her, because she seemed confident with that new look. She seemed so happy in her new image. So, i am happy that she's finally found what she likes to really look.

If I were to give my two cents, i would agree on you that she looks like a Korean singer because of her new look. I guess the only thing that makes her a little different is her complexion in comparison to those lily-white Koreans that up to this moment, I have trouble deciphering one Korean star from another. sorry, but they seem to look the same to me. Of course, if she doesn't want my opinion, it's fine by me also. It's her right and her look should be equated with her artistry or talent. But she should have anticipated this since she was a product of the entertainment scene and she knows how brutal that can be. But I admire her for making a choice and sticking with it. It's her decision life to live and not mine.

Hello Jeanne, I hope Filipino fans will learn to accept it one day because i believe what she did will determine who are her true and loyal fans despite of her look. but i think there are some changes to her, before she's even more lively compare the stage that she is now that she looks unfriendly and untouchable.
• Philippines
12 Mar 12
For me she looks more Japanese. The hairstyle match her face well but I would have preferred it to black like all Pinays. It was indeed her decision so be it. She is still a great singer that doesnt changes the fact.

I hope she remains the same. Hope every Filipino stars remains who they are just like Lea Salonga, proud to be a Filipina and never changed her looks.

Hello angelgee, yeah Lea salonga has really shown her beauty and she has been recognize all these years as to being her individuality and her voice too. but this is her choice though and i know she's happy about it

Well, if she's happy with her look, then there's nothing wrong with it. I really don't mind how she looks like (she can even shave her head if she's happy with it). Main thing is this, as long as she does her job well, then it's fine. Thing is this, a lot of Filipinos kept claiming "She's a Filipina!" but it doesn't mean she can't have her own individuality. I think she doesn't need to explain anything. She can just simply reply "I just want to do it" and I'm quite sure it will create another set of gossip/criticisms/etc. There are a lot of Filipinos/Filipinas who follow other country's trends (Western, Korea, Japan, etc) and no one really minds. The only reason why Charice is kinda in the lime light's because she's well known.
• Philippines
17 Mar 12
Hello Keihimekawa, Yeah i think she is and she's been thinking about this look for a very long time now. probably others didn't really see her individuality too well combined. i hope I and others get used to it.

i also prefer her old looks, with long hair that can easily be pulled up. i guess she could have dyed her hair with colors but not change all of them into blonde. I do not mind her changing looks and answering in english... if they were asking her in the same language... but i was surprised at how she reacted to the people. its like as if its me - take it or leave it. and so the rest is history... she was not able to fill araneta coliseum in her concert. What's up with that?! people cannot relate to her anymore, even her kababayans because it seemed to me that she is trying hard to be different when she is just like any other filipina... but she's got attitude now. I remember her declaration - "Im a person! Love me!" why have such demand! haha
• Philippines
13 Mar 12
Hello chiyosan, I agree with you, she looks even more mature in her old looks but i guess she wanted to feel young right now by having that look. Not bad though, hard to believe people were not into seeing her concert, at least her change gets you to see the real fans of her

i do not have any negative comments about her new look. as we all know, in showbiz, you always need to sell yourself. if she finds this new look as appealing to the companies who will sign her a record deal, then she can do anything she wants with her appearance. and besides, it is her voice that we find her excellent for.
• Philippines
20 Mar 12
Hello Borgborg, I don't know why a lot of people are giving negative comments about her sudden change. maybe it is true that people truly envy her and didn't want her to change for their own benefit.her voice didn't change a bit and that is the same voice that entertained us for years, looks probably didn't matter i guess. have a nice day.

Hello louievill, Well, a lot of people are just shock and as usual reacting to it, though i still like the old charice but if other viewers across Asia like her looks better, then go for it. . unfortunately, she made her choice and i hope the Filipino public will respect her for that some day

that is really what being a celebrity and pop star is all about, they don't stick to one look always, they are always subject to change in the way the present themselves, the way they dress, hairstyle, the whole image.

Hello Jadoixa, Maybe the fans or other people out there wasn't other with her previous changing looks. only on this instance that she decided to change that made us literally notice that look. they didn't like it this time compare to her previous change but sure they're gonna get used to it. have a nice day.

well, for me I don't like her new look. personally, i think she look great before with her long hair. But then again, it's not her hair or her image that made her famous. It's her beautiful voice that captured and touched our heart. She's still young and maybe it's just one of her phase. She's still exploring and experimenting. I am not a fan but I say let's give her a break..

13 Mar 12
Hello Chloe, Same here, it's just my view, i guess am one of those who are not please with the look but am still proud and supported to her still. indeed, her voice captured our hearts, lets hope she doesn't loose that voice.indeed she is exploring and probably will change her back in some years later
