Yes, but it is a topic that you can actually discuss as to why you agree or not unlike something like "What is your favorite pizza?" etc. I've seen some that are really questionable pass under the radar so I hope this one does.

Tell him to stay away from Television. It is that simple. If you don't watch TV 20 hours a day, the situation described by Grandfather is not going to happen, it only possible if you have bunch of boring friends and family members around you.

Hi J-Munkh, I can't say as I entirely agree with your grandfather. I can, however, see how one watching too much television would be hard to communicate with. My first husband was a tv addict. When he was not sleeping, he was sitting in front of the tv. It was impossible to hold a decent conversation with him as a good part of him was always focused on the tv. I blamed him and not the tv. I'm not a big fan of tv but I do watch it at times. I always turn it off when I have company. If I'm watching something and someone comes into the room to talk to me then I turn completly away from the tv and give the person my attention 100%. TV, Internet etc are all wonderful technologies that connect us to the rest of the world. If someone takes anything at all and takes it to a level that blocks communication with those close to him then I think it is the fault of the person and not whatever it is that is distracting him. I see this is your first discussion here. Welcome to Mylot!!

I don't think it's true.. I guess it's on how the person handles the relationship.. Because you can always find time to communicate if you really want to.. So I don't think television has something to do with it..

I think that television has brought many more people together. I don't believe that it has anything to do with the destruction of communication. Just as families used to sit around a radio listening to their favorite show, we do that now around the television. I've made friends because we liked the same TV programs and decided to watch them together. Additionally, people talk about TV all the time. They communicate about television shows and movies and such. So it hasn't destroyed communication at all, in my opinion. I believe that communication isn't as strong as it used to be, but for another reason: technology. Facebook, texting, internet in general. People don't have to try so hard anymore to talk to each other. When it comes to Facebook, you may have 500 friends, but how many of those do you actually communicate with regularly? How many of those are really your friends? Texting eliminated the need to have real conversations with people. Everything is in acronyms (TTYL) or broken English (prolly instead of probably). In fact, I think its all making the younger generation less intelligent. And the internet in general is destroying traditional communication (face-to-face). Some people spend their entire lives on computers and don't actually talk to others anymore. I love spending time online, but I absolutely need to have outside, real-life, face-to-face communication in my everyday life.
