Are you aware of the pesticides that food has?

I wasn´t much, until my doctor forbid me to eat raw veggies when I was in chemo. She also told me to peel all the raw fruit that I ate. If it wasn´t peeled, then it had to be boiled. It had to do with the pesticide content. Some of it is not so harmful, but you never know. Fortunatly I had some homegrown kale, arugule and lettuce in winter so that helped a lot. Do you worry about pesticides or you just munch away as I did before? In my country organic veggies are a lot more expensive than the others and you can only get them at the biggest supermarkets.

Yes, I'm very much aware of pesticides and not only pesticides, but herbicides that have been sprayed on and over growing vegetables. I try to eat organic produce as much as possible, but it is more expensive. In the summer, I grow a lot of my own and buy from the farmer's market to avoid the commercially produced stuff. Just think... if it's dangerous for those undergoing chemotherapy, then it's okay for our young children to eat? I don't think so.

I tried several times to post a picture of my sweet peppers for you to see, but this computer is not working. I posted somewhere else here one of my hot pepper plant. It pained me to pick the peppers to make a wonderful hot sauce.

I think it´s dangerous for everyone. I grow some veggies. Some are so beautiful that we can use it as ornamental plants too

Dear marguicha In our family, we have always been told to wash off those veggies so that the pesticides, chemicals and even the germs if any on their skin go off. My late granny even used to wash them with hot water before using them. It was like something that I grew up with. Unfortunately, recently, when I was at my dad's place, I did see something more gory - one of the farmers injected some chemical into a small pumpkin and the next day it was more than 8 kilos in weight. This was on some news channel. Now, if such cases are getting common, I am sure no washing or any boiling is going to help. Like your place, here there is no sign of sale of organic foods even at the big shopping malls. Though there are two shops, I know of, which get these organic stuff from bigger cities but then the prices are prohibitively high - sometimes even 5times the normal price. So I cannot afford them.

I had never heard of such a thing! But I often wonder at the difference between the way they raise chicken now and the way they did it when I was a kid. Chicken took their time to grow, but their meat was far better. If people are injecting veggies, we should start learneing to plant our own veggies.

I have a farmers market nearby twice a week. But I´m lazy (specially since my chemo) and the farket is open only in the morning. So I go there once in a while and buy several veggies so they last. I freeze some of them too.

Hello there , Rosekitty and MArguicha. Those horrible chemicals concern me alot And I want to know more about them. Rosekitty , Can you give me some links to discussions where you wrote about the pesticides ? I found a website in hebrew that specify many pesticides and the crops that those are used for , but it is ment for people who know a lot about them. A newbie has to read a lot about the pesticides and it will take too much time. I want to know what crops and pesticides to be away from.

I agree with topffer and I check if they have a branand at the super that says they are organic. As for farmers market, I doubt that they are organic. That´s why I´m trying to grow at home those veggies that I like to eat raw. I have always a container with coriander leaves and I have several herbs that are perennial (oregano, chives, parsley and the like). Now that is Autumn here, I´m starting my own lettuce and kale.

I was always aware of pesticides but never thought they were so bad until I had to spray my fruit trees I had to cover myself and use a mask because the pesticide is so poisonous...so I gave up the fruit trees and never used pesticides in my garden again! I peel all my fruit or wash them in vinegar and water but I still think is not enough buying organic can be quite expensive so now I Am planning my new garden in my new place so at least I can have fresh vegies for summer!

I don´t use pesticides in my apricot tree. Probably some of the apricots get eaten by ants and birds. But I can clean an apricot with my hand and eat it without washing it

Hiya marguicha, Once I ate some greenstuff that was in really bad condition I thought I was never going to get out of that I was really ill and then I realized what greenstuff it was and I have never bought it fresh again ever. I do buy it frozen though as I do like it. Usually I wash everything I can the best I can and anyway just lately its too expensive to buy really fresh greens and most of them are not in good condition either so I leave them where they are. Pretty usual thing after the Easter Holidays though things back to normal mid week or so. xxx

Fortunatly in my country we have good and cheap veggies and fruit if you buy them on season. But farmer´s market is close to my house only twice a week and I prefer to grow some of my own veggies so that I don´t have to rely on my going there at the right time of the day. Here fish and seafood get extremelly expensive during Easter time. I usually either buy it in advance or do without.

Hiya stringer, Username is very long yes but most people just put lovin an that is it. It was fresh spinach and very fresh looking but even though I washed it thoroughly it was still dirty so it seems so I did it again and then it was really clean but I had a colic and vomiting attack almost right away after since then I have only ever ate it frozen as they can clean it much better. Like you I was really ill and I thought like I was dying it was just that really wretched feeling when you can´t stop being sick and the colic as well at the same time. It took me nearly a whole Day to get over it. Also Swiss Chard is another one to be very careful with as well it can be treacherous you have to eat it very fresh no keeping it in the Fridge for a few Days it has to be cleaned very well and used. I think it is not only the pesticide but the very bad quality of water that they might use as well. Right on strawberries are so wonderful but they can be very treacherous as well all depends really. We can never really know what sort of treatment they have been given can we? As most of us cannot grow those things on our own through lack of space and so on we have to rely on the suppliers. I am never usually sick with anything but when I was ill with that it was quite bad. That is twice actually I have been sick through spinach or swiss chard. Sorry I don´t know the pesticide but I would have hoped that I would have got rid of it as I wash everything so well. Now I wash them and scald them all in boiling water first and throw the first water out and replace it with fresh water hope this helps I also throw in the first boil a clove of garlic and lemon sometimes. Seeing as strawberries are in at the moment I will be very careful and hope that it does not happen to me a colic attack is pretty bad I know. Hope this helps a little although you can never be 100 per cent sure of anything can you? Good eating with your strawberries too.xxx

Hello there , lovingangelsinstead21 (wow , what a long name , my fingers are tired :)). Can you please tell what exactly was that green and what was the pesticide it had ? Maybe you can save many people who read about it , preventing them from getting sick. I once ate strawberries at the mourning and during the day I got such a stomach pain and I didn't even reach the toilet in time. It was too urgent.

Same here in our country, there are organically grown veggies in the market, however, more expensive than the regular ones. Also it is hard to find because not all supermarkets are selling them. With regards to the pesticide content, yes boiling will reduce or eliminate the residue in it. My college friend found this on his thesis. As the environmental temperature increases, the residue decreases. So cooking will really reduce or totally remove the residues. Good for you that you have your own grown vegies, you are sure of it that it has no pesticides at all.

Well, the safety problem of foods is really serious in recent years. In the past, we were often told that keep the skin of some fruits, because there are so many nutrition in the skin. But how percentage of us dare not to remove the skins of the fruits? Yes, nowadays, healthy foods become luxury goods. While in the past, it is not. It seems if we don't got enough money to enjoy the real safe foods, we 'd better be more careful in consuming them. For instance, peel the fruits, cook the vegetables. It is better to lose some nutrition than risk being poisoned, right?

I am aware of this and i know there are farmers who use pesticides and even some chemicals so their plants will grow faster..which is bad. My doctor said that it is better to steam it first or boil it first before eating. I do try looking for organic veggies here which they said are healthier but then again it is expensive here too, but when i am at my grandmother's home, they have home grown veggies so no need to worry as all are safe.

There are some people in my city that wash lettuce adding some chlorine to the water. I don´t like that because the taste changes. But I am trying to grow as much veggies as I can. Not potatoes, as they will be cooked before eating, but the veggies that we eat raw.

Yes I'm highly aware of it nowadays, it is alarming what some of those chemicals can do. I worry all the time about what I am consuming. The strawberries are very good but they are the worst to buy fresh. There are vegetables too such as lettuce and cucumbers. I try to At least take the top layer of lettuce off and I do peel the cucumbers. I don't peel tomatoes though. I stopped buying celery due to the high content of 'cides it might have, and I love celery, too. You have a very concerned Dr and there should be more like her.

I think my doctor is wonderful. And in my country, giving a booklet about what to do and what not to do when in chemo is standard procedure. The nurse gave me the book, made me read it and then came to test me. I passed. But some people don´t have the knowledge required and they must be taught.

I do worry about pesticides on fruits and vegetables. I usually don’t eat raw vegetables but I always ensure I wash my fruits well before I eat them. We have agricultural organisations that are responsible for farmer’s awareness. They provide information to everyone listening that we need to wash and cook fruits and vegetables well.

I love to eat some raw veggies. There´s nothing better for me than a salad with iceberg lettuce, celery, avocado and arugule. Other times I make a sort of greek slad with olives and feta or goat cheese. Now I have lettuce, kale and arugule in my garden so there´s only the celery to clean.

I hate pesticides! Yes I know that the foods I have been eating have deadly pesticides! So now that I have two cancers I buy the organic rice which is much expensive than the ordinary rice which contains 100 percent pesticide! My problem now are the veggies that I eat... some are pesticide free while some are not. I try to grow some veggies in our backyard but it is very limited. I hope in the future we can have a pesticide free world! The question "how can we get rid of harmful insects?" will be asked. We can do it the natural way. Let the entomologists do the research... good luck to all entomologists...

I do very much. I go for organic to reduce pesticide and I put my vegetables in the sink for 30 minutes to reduce the pesticide doesn't matter if the bag has said already washed/prewashed. It's big hassle to tell truth especially when we want have fresh salad... doesn't know how how to avoid pesticide when we having them
