mysterious temples and ruins...

I have this fascination towards the temples and ruins of the past. They are shrouded with mysteries and stories. I always imagine what was it like living during the time when these cities and temples were thriving with people. And what have caused its demise or why have they abandoned these magnificent sites. One such temple is Angkor Wat. When I visited it, I was amazed by the structure and the magnificence of its design. It makes me wonder how did they do it during those days. I also want to visit the Mayan temples and ruins, Machu Picchu of Peru, Pyramids of Egypt, and the Aztec ruins. And for this year, I will visit the famous temples of Yogyakarta. They have 2 prominent temples named Borobudur and Prambanan. How about you? Do you like visiting temples and ruins? What have you visited already?

Hello doggydimon, are you one of the participants the Java summer camp 2012 in Prambanan next june? It is nice that you will visit my city to see prambanan temples, i pass this temple everyday on my way to go home. You should try to enjoy the sunset in Boko temple which located not far from Prambanan. There are so many temples around Prambanan such as candi sewu (sewu temple, sewu means a thousand), Kalasan temple, Banyu nibo temple, etc. I also have the same fascination towards temples and the ruins of the past, my imagination will imagine what kind of life that my ancestors had, how did they build the temple, etc. I still enjoy the legend of Prambanan temple, I know it is just a legend and not a real story but I cant stop read the story again and again. The story is about a princess who was cursed to be the last temple by a prince who proposed her. By the way do you know there is a urban legend about Prambanan temple, do not come to Prambanan temple with your lover unless you are married and you bring your spouse, because people believe the relationship will break up due to the curse. There are many temples in my country I have not visit such as gedong songo temple, dieng plateu, etc. I also would love to visit Angkor wat the twins temple of Prambanan, pyramid, the city of pompeii in Italy, etc. I also have the same thought as you, why they abandoned the city & temples, if there was a natural disaster that burried the temple so where were the people...wasn't there any survivor who wrote manuscript about what was going on, how did they build the temples, etc. I like reading the ancient manuscript but I still could not find any information about how they build the temple, the manuscript is only talking about the emperor, the history of the kingdom, the war but how they build the temple left a big question for us. I hope you have a nice vacation in Yogyakarta, and my advice to beware of pick pocket, and also always ask the price list before you order food if you decide to eat in lesehan in Malioboro. if you found any problem/trouble dont hesitate to contact me, Im not originally from Yogyakarta but i've been living here since 2009. have a nice vacation

hi Doggydimon, sure it is a pleasure to meet my mylot family and would love to share information about the temples. The sewu temple is located at the same area as Prambanan. The Boko temple located not far from Prambanan and there is a shuttle bus to visit. Do you have plan to visit Malioboro? because people said you dont come to Yogyakarta unless you visit Malioboro. Malioboro is a street market, there is Sultan palace not far from malioboro and you can also visit the ruins of ancient bath Tamansari. By the way if you are looking for souvenir my advice is to buy it in "Mirota Batik shop" in Malioboro you dont have to bargain for the price, the quality is good and the price is cheap.

Teotihuacan ruins - A picture we took at Teotihuacan, near Mexico City.
I love that too, friend. I have visited Aztec and Mayan ruins in Mexico and I wish I could go to Machu Picchu. It is a desire I have had for a long time. But I will have to hope that someone I know wants to go there as I don´t dare travel alone now.

One day I would love to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Most of all I wish to go to Machu Picchu in Peru. Due to it being very high up in the mountains I would be worried about my disabled son getting altitude sickness. I have just come back from my trip and have seen some lovely cathedrals. In Cordoba in Argentina we went to a gothic church and loved seeing it. Wow! In 2006 I visited Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. There I loved seeing Tikal National Park in Guatemala. I enjoyed climbing up some of the Mayan ruins and seeing them. I felt a sense of the past. The highlight of that trip was going to cave to see broken pieces of Mayan pottery. I had to swim into the cave and do much climbing.

I am going to visit Angkor Wat this year and I really look forward to that. I have read about it and I found a lot of pictures online. I think that it will be really interesting to visit Angkor Wat in person. I look forward to exploring Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm. We won't have enough time to visit all of the temples in the area so we have chosen to focus on the most important ones. In Ayutthaya in Thailand we are also going to visit the temple ruins. We plan on visiting Ayutthaya on a daytrip from Bangkok, and I think that it will be an interesting city to visit. Borobudur and Prambanan are also among the temples that I want to visit in the future. I won't visit them this year, but I plan on including a visit to those places in the my second trip to Asia where I will visit Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and a couple of other places. When I visit Peru I will definately visit Machu Picchu, but that won't happen in the near future.

I went to Borobudur 2 weeks ago. It was amazing. Though I was not able to see Prambanan, I am happy I was able to see Borobudur. And it will give me an excuse to come back to Yogyakarta again. hehehe... Machu Picchu is one of my dreams. Hopefully I can go there in 5 years time.

I have traveled all over Japan, seen the sites of Beijing,China, and spent a month traveling Egypt. I have seen amazing temples, shrines, tombs and churches. So much of our history is based in the religion of the area, that these play an important part in understanding the past.

I forgot to mention about the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. It was so amazing walking along the walls and within the Forbidden City. I just can imagine the grandeur of the Chinese empires back then. I would also love to see the temples of Japan. It is one culture that really fascinates me.

I do have the same fascination. I have quite a vivid imagination, and try to imagine people's lives back then (with the infos I get from a travel book or a tourist guide). I love ruins, too, because these are the proof something existed there in the old/ancient times. I've actually seen the Pyramids, and wow, that was an undescribable experience. There's this church here, in Hungary from the Middle Ages, probably one of the oldest ruins... and there's this guy who wants to build it back again to restore the original look... and I'm like, nooooooo... it's so enchanting and mesmerising and though-provoking as a ruin, it would be cheating to build it back again...

I really love to see the Pyramids also. I would camp out in the desert just to gaze at it all night. hehehe... You are right. I am against those who wants it restored to its original state. It is the same thing that is happening in Angkor Wat. I was quite disappointed when I saw some cranes and metal structures put up by the restoring crew. I wish they leave it as it is. It has survived for how many years with out anyone protecting it, why try to restore it back.

I do not have too much passion on the temples but it's indeed mysterious. And i have visited some of them in my country.I have to say that it is such a genious work to build that at that time and how people once live with that.I think that the temples in Vietnam and Nepal would really be worth visiting.
