I have been watching the news lately about how post offices are being closed down in many parts of the uSa and even there is talk about doing away with Saturday mail. With emails and other shippers like Fedex and UPS the postal service has a lot of competition.
I know, for myself, i find it easier to pick up the phone or send an email than to buy stamps and envelpes and pen and paper. Lots is saved by going virtual.

No way all post offices are going to close, if for nothing else, but for sending smaller packages. Those can't be sent via emails. And I truly cherish handwritten letters and postcards (the latter I guess never will go out of fashion for most people who go abroad or just to a really nice tourist detination)... and of course, special things like wedding invitations.

Wedding invitations cost lots and if your attendees all have emais how much more money you would save with the virtual invitation and a phone call? Parcels. .is the post office the only way to go. Do you think that perhaps fedex and ups may some day allow you to send a letter.. if that ever happened. then .. things would heat up.

I agree about the invites being impersonal through an email..it is saying you would rather save money but come and bring me an expensive present..If i received one that way i wouldn't go..

I agree with the convenience virtual mails are giving us.
I have a friend who always sent cards during special events, New year, Valentines and Birthday's and it feels great receiving one.
I still love to receive snail mails

I love snail mail too but only ones I seem to get is bills and those can come virtually now too. just think how many less trees need to come down if we did away with more paper usage? Virtual cards can say just as much and many times you can design them how you like.

I don't think the need for a post office will ever go away. I sent alot of stuff through regular mail each year. As I have family members who live in different states. UPS and Fedex is not always cheaper. I hate talking on the phone. I also believe in giving thank yous by sending an email or through reg. mail service. As long as it is in writing, it shows the person thought about you long enough to write a heart felt thank you.

Oh yes, those snail mail are becoming obsolete since most people can just email, they have their computers or they can go to an internet cafe. It is much cheaper and it gets there a lot faster.

Email is definitely more convenient and faster way to communicate. However, I wouldn't want the snail mail to disappear as I still love to get handwritten cards during special occasions as they are really special and mean a lot to me...

I am old school..was taught how personal it is to write a letter, card or send a package to my loved ones and i get in return...I have loved it so much and so many of my friends love getting a letter from me this way too..I also belong to a group where we swap out things we all need for something they don't want..so we use the Post office a lot..at special times during the year we sign up for sending cards to eachother by adding out name to a list and then all send to those people and they in turn send to us....i use recycled paper and all my items are sent in recycled boxes so the cost is cheaper..we keep the boxes and just tear off their label and add our own..
If you ever feel a lot is saved by going virtual, then you are missing out..opening up your regular mailbox and receiving precious things and letters that someone took the time making or writing just to you..well its Magical!!

Well, post office does not only do sending letters. They did much more than that like paying bills, shipping actual item, etc. You may say that there's a lot of other companies like FedEx doing the shipping, but if you have shop online for physical items, you would notice that the price are very different. Like i was buying from this china website and they provide free shipping for the item. I can upgrade to ship with DHL or FedEx, but i have to add $20-$50 USD for it. Sometimes it cost more than the item itself. And in my country, people still lining up at the post office everyday, so closing it would be a disaster.
