Applied to my 1st job on oDesk

After joining oDesk on March 31, filling out my application, updating & posting my resume, writing a cover letter, uploading 4 writing samples, taking 3 tests on the site, & looking on the site for specific jobs - writing, typing, data entry & Internet research - I finally applied to a job! It's one that requires posting forums, much like here on myLot. It's the perfect 1st job aspiration since it's similiar to what we do on this site. I plan on slowly building up my reputation by applying to jobs that I've been doing here on myLot, my old writing websites Suite 101 & Demand Studios & cataloging photos & books @ the Schenectady Museum (which is similiar to data entry). I need to do it gradually in order so I don't mess up & lose a good reputation in terms of online work. I'm also bidding my price low enough to attract attention but enough to accumulate decent money by the end of each job. I haven't heard back from the client yet. I need to take more tests & apply to more jobs.

It is very hard to have a job in oDesk, I am also a member in oDesk but not active because I am confuse on how to start. I applied a certain simple job, it was a typing job but my application was being ignored so I was a little bit discourage. So congratulations for your slowly but surely way of earning money in oDesk.

Don't be discouraged, just keep trying. Take the tests in your area of interests, build a portfolio, resume and apply for as many jobs as the system will allow at first. It takes time to build your rating there and I think a lot of businesses do not like to hire those without any scores. Pick up some simple jobs that will get you rated to start out--it helps. Good luck!

Kareng is right. You need to have patience. Some employers on oDesk are offering jobs to newbies to help build up their reputation, so you have to look out for that kind of jobs.

Good luck on oDesk. I personally did it for a week and found it more troublesome to keep taking all the test and constantly filling out applications that it wasn't worth my time. I do know some though that say it is their main income, so who knows?

It does take a little time to build your reputation there (scores), but worth it depending on the kind of jobs you are looking for. I see data entry jobs for less than $1 an hour. That's not for me and what I consider a waste of time and insult.

And while building your reputation there, while waiting for it to rise up, you can start working on yourself like improving yourself and honing your skills. Good luck to you kareng. Keep it up!

Hi, it seems we are in the same boat. Though i joined odesk one year before, because of , just as others put it, it is so complicated find a job there, i am not serious on it until one month ago. I have applied to many many jobs, you know what, most clients don't answer you at all. While some of them will decline my applications one or two days later. It really disappoint me. But finally, i got my first job with very low price. It has been three weeks, i heard from others it is better to let the client end the contract then he will give you a rating, and you can give your review too. But my client has not end the contract, i have worked for him for 11 hours, and i am waiting for his rating and review, you know, it is so hard to attract attention from clients if you have no rating and reviews and job histories.

Have you finished the job? If so, send a message and ask the client to please leave feedback for you. I would keep applying.

That's great! I am glad you got started on odesk. I have started the process but not made it too far as of yet. I think as many sources as possible is good to have. I hope to build up some clients from there as well. But it will be a few days before I get back on the site. Good luck!

good job! keep building your hours @ odesk site. I'm also a member on that. I'm currently working and I have small salary there but I enjoying it because of my employer. I'm also struggling to find a job that suits my field of expertise just like others do. I've been rejected oftentimes but there are times that they hired me but I'm the one who declined because I can't commit about the work that i don't like. At first it wasn't easy to start up but if you make some time and effort and i know we all succeed.

Good luck! I have found that most of the jobs on odesk go for very low rates. I don't work for under a certain amount. I'm not going to waste my time doing a job for $2.00 an hour when it should be more like $10. I would suggest that you go ahead and apply to as many jobs as you can. And don't lose your enthusiasm. Just keep trying! I have gotten a couple of on-going jobs from Odesk, but they are few and far between.

It should still be good. Try it if you can remember your log in information. There are all kinds of jobs there. Just stay active reading the job lists each day. Take tests to earn more ap entries. I have seen tasks as easy as liking a facebook page to getting 100's of facebook likes. There are different categories. Pounce on the ones that interest you and where you have the best skills. Good luck!

I remember joining oDesk a long time ago but never really tried it. Can I still use that account or did my account expired already because of not being active for a long time? If I'm going to try it, what simple tasks should I take first that are most easy to do? I want to try odesk and see how it will go.

I agree. Don't give up just keep applying. You will hit on one sooner or later! Also fill out a portfolio for companies to browse to see your skills. Some ask for test assignments.. don't be afraid, you are marketing your skills.
