I do not have budget right now to buy books, or even purchase the cheapest ones.. so i resort to downloading ebooks online, i do not know if it is bad or am i destroying the industry? I mean i cannot think of any ways for me to be able to continue to read. I just download some ebooks i could read on my phone... hungers games, mockingjay...some Nicholas Sparks books.. so i am doing some illegal stuff now right? ooppsss should not have shared it. someone might report me to the authorities

hi jazel Unless proven and caught you cannot be accused... and now that you have made this public... Well, I too download books via those torrents or even the other places - they are getting costly and the publishers or even writers dont understand that the best way to avoid them being pirated is to make them affordable

I am guilty of downloading files in the net too. But my purpose for downloading files is for personal use and NOT for distribution so I don't get anything from my illegal acts aside for getting what I want. So am I guilty of destroying the industry? Maybe.

Now that is a difficult task you've given to those people who're "policemen" of the net...if there's such a thing. I know there are "guardians" but not "policemen".

Well it could be illegal if you are downloading them from sites that are not free and you are not paying for them. There are a lot of free options for downloads but since you are reading really new books I really doubt those are free. Do have a library near by? Our local library has several books that they offer for free for downloading, you should check out that option. The whole online reading thing and tablets are killing the book industry, well the print book industry anyways.

There are some sites that gives free ebooks legally. On my ipad i could get classic books for free and they're legal. But if you're downloading it on some torrent sites, then i think you're destroying the industry a bit.

Frankly speaking, I can not say for sure whether this download is regular or not. Certainly by the time you download an ebook, you should see if your site will talk about a possible copyright protection by the same author. If the site makes it clear that such action is illegal, I that case you already know the answer. I, who when speaking of ebooks do not understand for me, I assumed that everyone knows are free to the web, they usually downloadable.

You are not alone really! Haha. Many computer users used to do so. Free movie downloads, free music downloads, free video downloads, free application downloads. I used to do so. Some of those sites are legal and have rights to share the product but some sites do not have rights for the product. Just avoid those type of sites. Even though you downloaded the ebook online via a registered and legit site which has a right to the copies, it is still legal because the website pays for you. Just to clear for the hunger games trilogy, do not forget the book catching fire, it is the second book. Haha. Read it before reading mockingjay. Don't miss it. :)

You're bad if you're downloading pirated material. But if it's something that you purchased, then it's fine. Or if a friend sends you a copy of the eBook. A lot of people tend to think that buying games and eBooks and even music online is expensive. Actually it isn't and by doing so you can help stop piracy by downloading from legal sites. Don't worry, I won't report you .

I think the printed book industry is taking a huge hit anyway, and people downloading books from the Internet both paid and for free is here to stay. I have a Kindle and it is great because I don't need to have book cluttering up my home any more. I would not feel bad about downloading ebooks. I would take care of a site offering e-books for free that otherwise you would have to pay for on a site like Amazon.. I think it is important to pay if we can afford it, because otherwise authors won't earn any royalties, and there will be less books available on and off line. _Derek

Yes, i believe it is beneficial to really buy it as the authors thrive in it but then users like me cannot afford to buy books.. even those ebooks for sale ( i am that poor) But i am really saving for a kindle, i so want to buy one.

you aren't doing illegal stuff, as long as you are not copying for your own profit. some sites let you read there ebooks for free. i guess it's not illegal then. i don't think you are hurting the industry. this is the world we live in...the electronic age. many people have books on there computers, phones, notebooks, etc. the industry knows this and is conforming to it to. they are making the books available so you can read. reading is reading. no matter what form it comes in. as long as you can do it.

Don't worry, no one will report it because most of the people do these things. There are just a few people who prefer to pay money and but the products. Nowadays there are many torrent sites which gives us access to movies and paid games for free. There are sites too which give paid applications for mobiles free. Many people charge for mobile games but i think it should be given free because there are levels which people cannot pass and they just get stuck in the game. Some paid apps should work fine after paying the money.

yes there are torrent sites which i use when i download the movies which are helpful as there are old movies which i want to download again. As for mobile games, i rarely download those but i have downloaded once for my phone and a payment was asked which i did buy using my load credits.. so i guess that wasn't bad at all

Does it mean i am doing illegal stuff also by downloading music from sites who gives them for free? I hope not, because anyway they are for free. I was able to download music of Stylistics just this lunch break. And to think that they were way 1970s i think.

I do it too...because I have not much money to buy, the original books' price is very high to me. I feel ok with it, because i have no choice...I need it for my studying...and happy when i can find it on the internet. However, for sure that if i have enough money to buy, i will buy the original one...^^

true, money is the issue if we do not have it it is hard for us to be able to buy what we like so resort to things like downloading so we could avail what we want right?

Nah, they're there for us to download them ehhehee.. Anyhow, it's not a problem, the problem there is that you're just destroying your eyes if you read ebooks compared to real books. I don't know, I just can't take reading ebooks that long as compared to reading the conventional books. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

I dont think it is bad. Alot of people do that. There might even be sited wjere you can read for free. But if you feel too guilty abput it, why not find the closest library to you and borrow books. I did that for a long time when I didnt have a book budget.

I dont think that you have done something wrong by downloading ebooks. If some moneys are found on the street, would you left it without picking up? nope. So where as it is available to read as e version, then i dont think that there is something wrong on reading them. I have downloaded and read many ebooks too. Have a nice time.

Buying books legally is allowed but stealing or downloading them without the permission of the author is really a crime. It is the same activity as we download new film from the net but downloading books(unauthorized) by online has not a big problem.

i guess so.. as since i also downloaded it in a legit site

As a reader, I want the book to be cheap, affordable or even free. But if I was an author, I would like to earn from what I'm writing.Ending book piracy means only rich can read. Some people think it would be great, but would that bunch of rich people buy millions of copies of the same book?NO.Why should they? So, it's not a solution. We need a compromise that would satisfy both the reader and the author.
@jazel_juan (15747)

good logic, i do agree with that as authors do earn a lot of royalties and stuff from their books.. they do get rich but then, they still earn even though books are pirated right? people like me, cannot also afford to buy their books as most are really expensive thus resorting to downloading free ones
