I don’t blame them for the loss

Today I gave 5 sets of CFL bulbs, fitted with holders, and plugs at the ends of 10 meters wire to the workers who are doing plastering work in the rooms of the renovated portion of my home; I asked them to hang them from the ceiling hook for better light. To my utter surprise the head mason came and told me, the bulbs were fused; I checked them and found all the five bulbs’ glass were broken, I mean the glass cracked. Immediately I could picture what has happened; for hanging from the hook on the ceiling they have removed and refitted the bulb in the holder by HOLDING the glass, not the plastic part of the bulbs that enter in to the holder. And this caused the crack, no use telling them, they never use CFL lamps but normal 100 watt glass incandescent bulbs in their homes, government gives them free electricity as they are supposed to belong to the BPL (Below Poverty Line) category, though they are really not, their earning per day is 350 rupees. So I kept quiet, borne the loss. Do you use CFL lamps or normal incandescent bulbs with tungsten filament? Any such story like mine you would to share? Please share and comment on different aspects of this story. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 25/04/2012

I don't think we use that here, we have what's called Energy Saving light bulbs, but you can use them with any lamp, and everyone where I live has lamps, that and fruit trees. They all seem to be pretty common around here.

CFL lamps are certainly energy saving type, are you talking about the latest bulbs, that have light emitting diodes in them?

We have cfl bulbs here but they are strong enough to be put in by the glass. They fitting is of the bayonet type, perhaps if yours are screw fitting they require more pressure? all the best uban

hello dada, But those bulbs don't break easily- how come it happened? I mean- we are using these kind for a decade and I myself replaced bulbs once it is busted and I've never break any. We are using the spiral or the triple tube lamps from Germany "Osram" Hugs to you and maa

The vast majority of the light bulbs that we have in our home are CFL because of the fact that they generally last a lot longer and are a lot cheaper to use than traditional incandescent bulbs. We do have a few exceptions, however, being the lamps that we use beside our beds. These lamps are touch lamps with the three way bulbs and I've never seen CFL bulbs with three levels of brightness.

Namaskar Sir When these CFL bulbs were new in Bhubaneswar's market, I had got two of those @400.00 INR each. The first one got broken due to a similar reason. As it was a new experience, I was fitting this one holding the glass part and when I twisted it into the holder, the glass bursted. The glass pieces also cut through some sections on the fingers and the palm. I learned it is dangerous but also can be quite severe. Now, as I am a little more intelligent(than these workers), I could figure out the reasons and the next one did fit the right way - holding the upper segment (rubber or plastic - not sure). I did feel bad as I had just wasted a 400.00 worth of bulb but then, I had to learn the right way too.

Sid beta The price has gone down, so also the quality, earlier bulbs had one year warranty and they lasted almost one year, now it is 6 months and they last for about 6 months The powder coating in them and the mercury vapor are poisonous..

hi prof, CFL will not break even if you hold it in the glass as long as you use soft touch, yes we can understand them because they are used to using incandescent bulbs. I have already replaced almost all my bulbs with LED, I only use CFL where I need brighter light. Ever considered using LED? They are cheaper now than before, they emit almost no heat and won't break, it would give almost the same brightness to a 5w-10w cfl but use up only 1-2w, just make sure you buy original cause there are lots of fakes that do not last long, the good ones can last from 8 to 10 years, good luck on your construction
