Lousy ISP?

United States

I have been without my internet for the past two days. I don't know why, my ISP just said, "We are aware of your problem and our technicians are working on it." Of course, that was just a recorded message. Heaven forbid they should have a live person answer my obvious questions: Why is there an outtage? How long is this going to take? What are you doing to remedy the situation? ISPs just assume that we don't know what they are talking about so they don't even bother with any explanations. Mind you, we did have some lightning storms right around the same time. A simple, "our tower got struck by lightning" would have sufficed for me but no, they would rather not offer any explanation at all. Am I the only one who finds this frustrating? Since I arrived in Pendleton six months ago, my internet has stopped working more times than ever before in my life. I have had internet for the past twelve years, too! Am I wrong to blame my ISP or to consider them just a lousy ISP? How often does your internet go out?

Our ISP is our cable company and supplies the phone as well and it goes out entirely too often for a large city like this one.

I don't have cable...no TV in the house...but my phone company is my ISP so they have two things I pay for. It's interesting that your large city would have this problem. Do you have a lot of thunder storms, too? I know that in Alaska we rarely had any lightning and my internet never went out there so I'm wondering if that is a contributing factor?

I will say that storms used to knock out my cable regularly, but not so much these days... I have no idea what knocks it out most of the time lately

What irks me most is the lack of explanation the ISP offers when the outtage occurs. If they would just say, "it's the lightning storm that does it", then I would be, like, "oh, well, that's not really anything you can help, is it?" and accept it as part and parcel of living here. But when they don't offer any explanation, I tend to blame the company for being a third-rate ISP and wish I could find a different one.

AHi Alaskanray, No, I don't think you are wrong to blame your ISP at all. They usually are the problem(not always) when these things happen. I originally and Verizon for years with almost no problems at all. When there was a problem, they worked with me over the phone to remedy it quickly. When the problem was not secluded to my service such as a tower getting struck by lightning, they were informative and told me approximately how long they estimated it to be back up and running. They were just really good. Then they sold out to Fairpoint who literally sucked. I got rid of them within 4 months. It was that bad. Now I have Time Warner and they are great. Lately it's been going down quite a bit but there is a lot of construction outside my place and I think that is the cause. It is usually back up and running within an hour. Two days seems like a long time. I wonder how many business's are affected by this also. Do you have any other options for providers?

That's the trouble with living in the boonies...you don't have much choice in your service providers. I don't know that there are any other companies here but I seriously doubt it. If there were, I would be switching in a flash!

That really sucks :( Here in Denmark the internet never goes out, I can't recall it ever happening, that's pretty nice :) However I recently moved to a new home - guess how long it took my new ISP to set up my new line? 8 weeks! What the... It's like they don't want new customers.

Oh, wow! That is a long time. I had problems with mine here getting it set up and I thought that was bad at one week! Nothing like what it took yours! Did they offer any explanation as to why it took so long?
