Watering the garden by rain water is a long-standing practice. Most plants tolerate rainwater better than well, tap or spring water. Collected rainwater is usually warmer and free of fluride, chloride and lime. For this the gardener's are collecting rainwater into a barrel. I have seen that one into my friend's house. To keep the water clear she adds a little charcol or activated carbon which is used in aquarioums. The barrel is covered as no small animals can get in. As I have no garden, I have no need to collect rain water for gardening. But I hope mylotters who are in gardening, are collecting rainwater.

Our old home had a tin roof made from corrugated GI sheets, during rains the water falling there fell on a big drum placed at one end, that we used for so many purposes including gardening, laundry etc. I had seen many such homes in Ballygung. Best of luck. Happy posting, cheers.

It was easy to store rain water through Corrugated GI sheets. We also used to do it in our childhood. The days have gone.

Sona beti It is good idea to use rain water for gardening, you must be aware that rain water is nothing but natural distilled water, when it falls through atmosphere it absorbs the gases, dirt etc, so it is better to leave the initial shower, i had been to a village in Rajstan, they collect using big funnel like structures, use this for laundry and even drinking water, blessings to you and Chandan

Yes uncle, my father-in-law told me that during 1950-55 when he was a student of our local college, they used to collect rain water under the guidance of a professor of chemistry to use that water in the lab. But I think the process will be fruitless now. We have forgot cats and dogs rain for a couple of hour. In this age of pollution initial period should be at least 2 hours and 2 hours heavy shower we are going to forget.

The process you explained here is known as RAIN WATER HARVEST. Very efficient and natural way to conserve the natural resource(water) to be used during water crisis.

Hi... gardening is my hobby too. I have no need to collect rain water as in this region of India, rain often falls from spring to autumn. But in winter, i have to use tubewell water in that season but later rain comes and makes my garden lively. have a nice time.

Yes, shibham, in your area rain falls in time. In my area we were also had the same experience. But with changing scenaro our farmers are facing scarcity of water during summer and to part autumm. Thats why our state govt is asking for "JHAL DHAO, JHAL BHARO" which means store water to have water. Water level is diminishing. Few days ago I read in news paper that Cherapunji is facing short of rain.

I don't know anything about this but check your state laws. Collecting rainwater is illegal in many states.

Hi, It is very good idea of collecting rain water and give it to plants. By this way the water is saved and plants also get pure water. I have seen one photograph on mylot of collecting rainwater in the barrel. I also don't have garden but I will convey this advice to my friends who are having gardens.
