Those are the words Mum uttered to me on the telephone earlier. She meant the "Heimlich" Manoeuvre of course but "Heineken" but she couldn't remember the word. She then told me, "Well, I knew it began with H."
Haha!
Yes, I'm afraid my Dad had some meat stuck in his throat (again) but he's got it out himself this time..eventually.

I'm glad your dad is ok. That's pretty scary. My uncle once got a piece of meat stuck while we were eating at a local restaurant. He ended up vomiting all over the place but didn't get it all up. We had to take him to the emergency room where they finally got it. Turned out he had swallowed a piece of meat that should have been cut up.

My Dad's problem is a) he doesn't use a knife to cut his meat and b) he doesn't have a glass of water with his meals. I reckon both would help him out tremendously but - the stubborn fool he is..he knows best.

The sense of humour runs in a family. The lesson has sunk in ,your Dad couldn't have that stuck in his throat this time.

I think Mum is going to ring the Doctor about food that may be suitable for my Dad to eat rather than the meat he is clearly having trouble with. My guess there are liquid supplements that can be bought, plus soup of course.
It's unfair that Mum has to help my Dad out when he could help himself to be safe in the future.
He's so stubborn. I guess that's where I get MY stubbornness from!

Stubbornness is sometimes a strong point. If you hadn't been stubborn, your FIL wouldn't have done what you want him to do about wallpapering and painting.

hi janey oh my G I remember being all alone while we were still in our apt and choking. I could not g t my breath so I tried the Heimlich maneuver with the back of a lounge chair and the chunk of
gristly meat flew out of my mouth., I was so scared as I did not know either of the families on either side of us and they all worked anyway so it was all up to me.After that I cut up my meat in smaller pieces as I was all alone on my own,. at least here in Gold Crest I would get help in an emergency. lol
I guess when one is in her eighties its good to have people around
but I miss not having m
y own room in our own apartment

Awww.
My Dad has dealt with his choking problem before. Yes, there was the time when he ended up in hospital overnight but there was a time before that that he "writhed around on the floor with a spare rib stuck in my throat." Mum was here with me when that happened and he took great delight in telling her about it when she got back. That incident was around 18 months ago and there have been 2 others since. Wouldn't you think he'd do something constructive like use a knife to cut his meat? He's not an invalid and I don't think it's fair on Mum frightening her like that when it's in his own hands to do something about the situation.
If I were Mum I'd just give him soup every day and I'm sure there are liquid supplements he could take as tablets are a problem with him as well.

My daddy used to call it the "Hind-lick maneuver."
Sounds like your dad might need to be reminded to chew before he swallows if its a recurring event. lol

I have worked where I had to grind all foods in a food processor. It sounds like a serious problem for him.

He eats "like a bird" but the food he does eat takes him AGES. If I were my Mum I'd just give him soup every day. It's the only food he can eat without any problems and it does my head in the fact he can't be bothered using a knife to cut his meat with.

This is so hard for your mum but the good news is that your dad is OK.
By the way I didn't know about this Heimlich stuff. Now I've checked it out, I saw instructions how to help a "choking victim". At the end it was written:
"Don't slap the victim's back. (This could make matters worse.)"
Well, this is just what I do! And I've always seen people around me slapping a choking person' back. But maybe a gulp of Heineken would be the best manoeuvre after all?

Especially in my Dad's case as he's a bit of a "lush" meaning..er..he likes a drink or three!
