My home renovation work is going on, in spite of full precaution, fine cement like dust settle on my keyboard, monitor, ups unit, speakers etc; I have covered the LCD monitor, speakers, UPS unit and the processor with transparent pvc covers. I had covers for the key board and the web cam; I really didn’t like the cover on them, so removed. I clean the lens of cam using rectified spirit and cotton swabs. How do you protect your keyboard etc, do you clean the key board regularly, how? Please share and comment. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 04/5/2012

Professor: Yes. Keyboard management is an important thing. Otherwise dust will get settled on the keys and they may not function. Recently I had a peculiar problem -- the key for T came out of its place. I took it to HP show room and they got it fitted - charging Rs.500. After 15 days again letter A also posed same problem. I had to pay Rs.500 again. This is the first time I find keys coming out of the laptop board. I clean them nowadays carefully using cloth. I do not brush them rashly nowadays. Now it is ok and I think it will be ok.

Raviji 500 is certainly too much, they charged because it was showroom, this you could have done too. On my laptop screen and key board i have fixed transparent pvc film, it is flexible, it protects not only from dust but spill over of tea..you can buy one set for just 100 rupees Professor

Professor Sir: Thanks for the information. I will buy transparent pvc film from Ritchie St. chennai. I was not aware there is a way to protect the key board from dust and liquids.

leinrix I was told that we should not use wet cloth or wet brush. HP fellow told like this: In case coffee or tea gets dropped on the key board--we should wipe it out immediately and not leave it to get dried on it. I found this advice useful.

I probably should clean my keyboard on a more regular basis than I do, but it isn't something that I've ever really wanted to bother with. I will wipe it down with a damp rag about once a week. However, when it comes to a really deep cleaning, that is something that I will typically only do when the keys start to stick really bad. Part of the reason that I don't do it more often is because of the fact that I have a wireless keyboard and it can be quite a pain to give a heavy cleaning to.

Hi Prof... actually, I am more concern of your lungs rather on your computer. I just hope that you would not inhaled most of it because that would be more dangerous. I know how it is when we had a home renovation, especially the fine cement which is very irritating to the skin. To protect my computer, yes, I put some plastic covers and do a regular dusting on the outside surface. While my husband make sure to clean the CPU once in a while. Even if it is covered, small dust usually enters inside the CPU.

I used a brush to clean the dust particles on the keyboard. Sometime I used to blow the wind at those areas where the brushes are not able to get those dust particles. Wind blow helps us carry out the dust particles quite easily. You can get get the source of the wind from your mouth itself

Good idea of blowing the dust with air from mouth. Professor

Hi Bhuwan... Several weeks ago we had a new wooden floor fitted and the tradesmen cut the wood in a closed room. I said I would prefer them to cut it in the garage, but they said they had dust-extractors fitted to their power saws.. However, the dust still flew about and got into my computer and all over my computer and we were cleaning dust from the rest of the house for a few weeks afterwards. I was fairly annoyed and will be insisting that any wood-cutting is done outside or in the garage.. _Derek

I always tried to clean my laptop once a week, and it's true dust are every where. In one of my discussion with the same topic one poster said that out computer has magnetic elements that can attract dust so easily. That's why we have to do the dusting every now and then specially me I was closed to my street and dust can easily goes in to the house whenever there is strong wind outside.

Well i have never heart about this, but the keys are plastic, due to friction with fingers they get charged and attract dust.. Professor

As I watch little dust bunny’s collecting under the keys and hairs that appear to be growing out of them like some wild hair spectacle, I’ve decided to give my keyboard a name instead. Harvey! Vacuum cleaner and a tooth pick! Alternatively disconnect the cord, remove the screws in the back and actually wash out the plastic parts then dry.
