American Election Year

So I am in support for the most part of the Obama administration, and I won't get into that here. That's not what this thread is about, but I wanted to state that before I asked my actual question, just to see things from my POV. I've always believed politics is choosing the lesser of two evils, I know it's a pessimistic way to look at it, but from what I've seen it's the truth. But anyway to my question, do you think Obama's recent support of Gay Marriage, has anything to do with it being election year? I mean I would love to think it's not, but I can't help but to have a cynical mind, politicians are always making promises on election campaigns that they never keep. So I was wondering what you think, myloters, is Obama only trying to get reelected or do you think it's a possibility that he could really be giving support to gay marriages?

I don't think it has to do with his election year because this project has been works for a while. He has 4 years to do what ever he wanted to try to put to work and that doesn't just happen over night. You have to get people on your side and support to get something like this to be seen and looked at and then finally to the final stages and he has to choice what things are important to the US to get done first. Gay rights has been at the for front for a long time now and people have been pushing and pushing to get a bill through to recognizes in almost all states that two people regardless of there genders can be married and seen as a real marriage. There is always going to be people against gay marriage and gay rights so right now he is making a lot of people happy but also a lot of people POed at the same time. Weather it helps him get reelected or not we can't say yes or no with a 100% behind it. It's really a 50/50 and if he wants to be president again. Most people will run a second term every few do not. I wouldn't mind seeing him back in office out of all the presidents in my life time that I've seen I think he has been the best out of all of them. when it comes to electing someone you should put your personal views aside and look at what they are running for and if we feel is this going to be good for the over all country not is it going to be good for you.

Its not the election, he has always supported gay and lesbians. And so do I.

Yes, and it was only made because groups were threatening to withhold campaign contributions. He has actually flip flopped several times on this particular issue. It also has a potential to backfire.

I think it is just because it is an election year and also Biden forced his hand a little. He hasn't said he would do anything. He said it was still up to the states and was not the federal government's place to do anything. So he is taking the road that might get him some votes from one segment of the population but not lose many in some others. And of course it helps him get a lot of contributions from Hollywood; for example the fund raiser at George Clooney's house right after that raised $15 million. Most of Hollywood is very pro Gay Marriage. I don't really care where he actually stands on the issue. My problems with Obama are that he is spending way to much and his pointing the country toward socialism.

I believe thathis support of gay marriage is just becasue it is election year. He thinks if he can get all of the very proud gay people out there tosupport him he can get re-elected. Hopefully I am praying they are smarter then that and realize what he is trying to pull. If it does work and he gets re-elceted he will reverse he support on gay marriage.

I think he really supports it, but I don't think it's going to change much of anything. It's not going to win him votes he didn't already have and it's not going to get gay marriage legalized.
