Color Guard?

My sister did guard in high school and wants me to try it out. I want to work with riffles. But we all have to start at flags. So... A year of painful flags falling on me, then a riffle. Okay, fair enough.
Does anyone know what I should do over summer to prepare?

I would buy a used one online to start practicing. A rifle falling on your head is going to be a lot more painful than a flag.
