Having a car is so expensive nowadays! But can we live without it?

Tomorrow we have to take our family car for service and I was discussing with my parents how expensive it is to have a car those days. The gas price is unreasonably high and it keeps rising. Even if we decide to go swimming to the closest beach which is 40 mins away from home, we need to spend at least 20$ for gas. Cars also need to be checked regularly and the car service usually costs a lot. Moreover, the insurance needs to be renewed every year and everything has become so expensive that I am thinking about alternative means of transport. I have decided that I will try to use my bicycle more often now that the weather is warm. My work is cose to my house and I don't have to use a car, so I am also trying to walk sometimes, it's good for my health too! Do you ever think that you could live without your car in your everyday life? Could you replace the car with a bike/bicycle or just take the public transport and walk to your workplace?

You can definitely replace a car by other means of transportation. I'm currently 21 and I have been working in different parts of the world since I was 17, and I was always on time, every time and for everything I did, no matter what the distance was. I only got a car this year! That's it, a car is just there for convenience.

Hello! When I was living in the capital city I didn't have a car either! I was using the subway or the bus to reach my destination. People with cars could be searching for a parking for hours and I am too impatient to do that! Now I've moved to a small city and sometimes a car is required, for example if I need to go a few kilometers outside of the city, which might take me 10 mins with the car, but without a car I won't be able to reach my destination! Now that you have a car, do you still use other means of transport from time to time, or you go everywhere with your new car?

Hi! Yeah big cities tend to have great transportation. Even though I now have a car, there are times when I still use public transport, like if im going on a holiday or something, but If I'm going to the store or cinema I'll use the car.

hahha, i am living without cars now. And i am ok with it, no car is not problem also. If i have a car now, i may sell it to get money because i don't have a place to park a car, not much money for it such as gas, maintenance, etc.. I will use a motorbike only. If there is subway in my city, i will use subway for my going inside city. If going far, i will take a bus or taxi... By the way, i live well without private cars...

I guess it is possible to live without a car but not for everyone. I am wondering how people were going to other cities before cars were discovered. My parents have told me their grandaparents were walking for a day or more to reach to other city nearby. I can't imagine living like that, but for now I like it that I am not so much dependant on the car. Parking is another common problem that comes with having a car!

Depending on where you live, some people have no choice but to have a car. I lived in a "pedestrian friendly" area for a little while. It was good for me. I got out, got exercise, and saw better what was around me. Make no mistake, people thought it looked odd that I would walk; but I did it because I could. I would go to the grocery store with my reusable shopping bags, go to the laundry, and even go to the bank. Not everyone could be blessed to have everything so close in such a scenic area; but I did. I worked from home, and did not have to take the bus if I didn't want to, except for in certain situations. I have moved for my "pedestrian friendly" area; and now I need a car. I really wish I had a choice.

The place that you have describe sounds very nice. The problem with big cities is that you start spending money from the moment you leave the house. But if someone has the access to the places that are necessary to visit regularly (like work, super market, bank etc.) then life would be much simpler and we wouldn't depend so much on cars.

Well I did use a bicycle to go to work and generally move around the city here. It is cheaper for sure than any other way, I also did some calculations about it and saw that it saved me the bicycle's price in just the first 5 months, just by saving the public transportation's fare, which is quite impressive :) But as soon as there is a family a car is needed for trips especially.

yeap you are right all you need is a tire fix kit and you are done for 3-4 years :) And as you said in bicycle friendly cities you can move around fast and safe.

You are right, when the whole family needs to travel, the car is the obvious solution. The best thing about bicycles is that they are also fast, after the purchase you don't have any additional costs, it is environmental friendly and it keeps our body fit.

Hello :). You are lucky since your job is close to your house, however in my country there is no good infrastructure or planning, so most people work really far from their homes, public transportation is horrible and in most places the streets were so hurried that going cycling is seriously dangerous, both for the terrain and the possibility of being run over by a car. Things are so bad that most people don't even have bicycles, since there's nowhere to use them. Even people who use bikes to have less expenses in gas are in danger, it doesn't go a week without someone crashing against a biker and killing him. So living without cars is only possible when your country developed in a way to allow it. Mine didn't so I can't :(.

The big cities in my country have the same problem but I am lucky because I live in the countryside with only a little traffic and closer distances. However, even in the big cities they make efforts to reduce the car use mainly because of the pollution. But even in the big cities, the public transport is very well developed and many people prefer to take the subway or the public buses to go to work which is actually faster and cheaper than using the car with so much traffic.

I live in a developing area that its in the awkward state that doesn't have the open spaces of the countryside but neither have the developed options of a city. While in my country there a type of train, it only gets to the metropolitan areas, and buses everywhere are late, slow and mostly broken down, however, in the area I live there aren't even buses :p. In fact, we are only connected to other cities by two streets, one go through a mountain, which also is in that awkward stage of development so there are traffic jams and its uphill so going in bicycle is asking for a heart attack, and the other doesn't even have sidewalks, so cycling there is asking to be run over, and the problem is, right next to the street are fences of companies or abandoned tall grass, so its not like you can ride outside the asphalt. After you get to the next city there are sidewalks, but they are broken down and not quite leveled, so you can't ride there either. It stays like that for around 6 miles (9.6km) and while that is not a long distance to travel on wheels, walking 6 miles every day to go to work would make anyone quit :p. So in here its either a car, or an helicopter :p. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to work from home, since gas costs around a dollar per litter, and between traffic jams and long distances to get to work, that's around half your check :p.

I think that depends on your current lifestyle and status, if you are single and lives in a metropolitan area where the key places can be traveled by foot then you don't need a car

I live in a small city now, the distances are not far to walk or use a bicycle! But if there is a need to go outside the city, the bus services are a bit poor and a car is necassary! Right now, I can live without a car but I might need it again in the future for my job.

my hubby uses his car for work so he has to take it with him. he does, however, work at a body shop so he gets a good deal on repairs plus he gets gas money, which helps.(he drives customers home or picks up parts). i, on the other hand, mostly take public transit because i only work part time.

It's cool that your husband can get better deals and paid gas, he is very lucky. It is natural to use public transport, I think that in most cases it is cheaper and the car is not a priority. It's the same with me, right now I can't afford it and I will use it when I decide that I really need it!

Yeah it's ridiculous how much money we have to spend on cars and their maintenance. I have to spend around 40 bucks to fill up the gas tank in this 1996 Saturn that i have, a few months ago I had a 1997 Dodge Intrepid and that cost around 50 something dollars just to fill up the gas tank. I can't even afford to pay for the insurance each month, my mom pays it for me. This isn't to mention how incredibly boring it is to have to drive everywhere, sometimes i really think about how much time in our lives we spend driving. I really don't like driving or having to spend so much of my paychecks on gas and other stupid things like that. Once I move I'm going to try and live without a car because I don't like wasting my hard earned money on something that I don't enjoy. I'm going to try and move somewhere close to the college I want to got and hopefully get a job with in walking or biking distance so that way I can live without an automobile and all the costs that it entails.

I have never thought about how much time people spend driving, it is an interesting question. And I am guessing that each person's answers will be a surprise if we really think about it! I believe that even if you find a slightly more expensive house in order to move close to the university, you will probably find that you still have profit from eliminating the car expenses. Thank you for your comment! Have a wonderful day!

I've been walking, cycling, using public transportation, when I was working at a company. Although my position is not low. But mostly I use the car. After retirement, every day I use the car because: - The traffic in my town is very risky to use a bicycle. - The long distance makes it impossible for me to walk away. - Public transportation is not convenient here. - I often go out of town.

I think I would have to use the car too, in the situations that you describe! Cycling is dangerous in traffic because the drivers don't pay much attention to the bicycles. The only option would be public transport but if it's not convenient it's not worth it! I used to live in a huge city as a student, and I could travel everywhere by public transport. My university was 1 hr away because I had to take the subway until the city center and then take a bus to the uni. By car, it was only 20 mins, because the shortcut was much closer and the 2 areas were very close on the map! But there was no bus service between the 2 areas! Fortunately, my brother had a car and he was driving me to uni sometimes!

Well, i don't have a car because i could not afford to buy one, so i would say that we could always live without a car. Especially you that works close to your home, you don't have to spend that much for a car. More people with cars now are taking public transport to and from their offices because of the high cost of gas, car parts and the heavy traffic. If they want to take a car to their office, they have to live very early so that they could avoid being caught in heavy traffic. How i wish my home is just a walking distance to my office. I would prefer walking than taking a bike or public transport. It is healthy and free.

Life would be much simpler if people didn't have to move long distances to arrive to work. One additional advantage of walking is that I had the shance to meet more people on my way to work. Many other people do the same as I do and walk to their offices and it is nice to meet familiar faces in the morning before starting the hard work! Thank you for your comment! :)

Need transport to work in better place - Better employment with own transport
yes having own transport is important if working in some factory with better paid but it far away from the city , where the public transport are available , some job require traveling too , which are like sales or technical support. cheap own transport like learning motorcycle is a good option because in my country majority of the states public transport is in bad shape.Without good mode of transport for self , it is hard and time consuming to travel.

Some companies also provide private cars to the employees and pay for the fuel if the car is essential for the job. This is a great alternative for someone that works in a field that requires travelling. Motorcycle is a good idea, I was always jealous of the guys that were passing in front of me while I was stuck in traffic!

Hello besweet, I used to have a car but give up on it eventually because it was so expensive to maintain. Most of my money would be spend to its maintenance, gas, and accessories. I grew up riding a car because my parents have one, but now that I am adult, I want to spend my own money with the things for myself. And since car is expensive for me, I decided to let it go for a while until such time that I am already earning big bucks to maintain it.

I agree, when it is time to fully support ourselves and live with what we earn, we need to set our priorities. This is how I decided to search for other alternatives as well. And when I will have the money to maintain my own car, I will have one. Right now I borrow my parent's car when I need it but it doesn't happen very often because I can cover most of my transportation needs with other means.

Yes we can live without a car. Its to expensive to have one. But if you can afford it then buy. I used to have motorcycle as mode of transportation in my work. If I have the chance to have plenty of money then I will buy my dream car.

Unfortunately I can't afford to use it in my daily life with the gas price at 1.7 euros per litre. A few years ago when everything was cheaper I wasn't even thinking about the cost before planning a trip and now it's my main concerd! What's your dream car?
22 May 12
of course we CAN live without cars. i mean our own car. i used to go to work with motorcycle or even bicycle, it doesn't really matter wether our office is near or far as long as we can still reach it with quite normal time and energy, i think it doesn't matter. so what to do if we don't have that much money to buy a car? do we still need to buy it just because it is a car and it can bring up to the higher level of life by having a car? if we don't have that ability to buy a car, so why should we rite? that is my opinion :d

The reality is that a car is more comfortable when travelling, it is warm and dry comparing to a motorcycle. But if the money is not enough to buy and maintain a car, then I wouldn't risk to get one without being able to pay for it. It is also a matter of prestige and social acceptance for some people that want to prove their status through a nice car. Who doesn't like expensive cars? I would like to have one as well, but it isn't my purpose in life. If I could afford it without cutting from something else, I might consider looking for one :)

I can't afford not to have a car!! I need it to get to my jobs! I don't live near my jobs to walk to them! Transit doesn't go near my jobs! Car pooling would not work, especailly at my full time job! Nobody goes to work the same time I do! So I really need my car no matter what gasoline prices are and what it costs to maintian it! I need my car! I don't live near my family and when I want to see them I have to drive to see them! So I need a car!

Sometimes using the car is the only option for people that live far away from their job. I understand your problem, without a car you wouldn't be able to get to your job and visit your family. Therefore you have to pay for fuel, service and insurance no matter how expensive they cost.

Hello besweet, I don't need to in my country because i know that my work place is pretty much at home. when i go to other places, i would definitely commute instead. as for the use of bike? i haven't really done that in a long time. bikes are good, and it can really give you the exercise that you need.

I like taking my bike bacause it is a bit faster than walking. On the other hand, it is difficult to go for shopping with the bike, because there is no place to carry the bags. So many time I walk as well. It is very convenient to have a good public transport sustem that connects the cities and with today's prices, it is cheaper to use the bus or the train than taking the car!

It depends. I live in a small town, so everyhting is 10 minutes away (bike). I bought a bike 3.5 years ago and go everywhere fast and easy. Plus it is good for my health. You can get a bike if you live in a big city, but for certain places. You can't ride for 3 hours.

Yes, I'm in a small town as well and you can go anywhere by walking for 30 mins max. The problem is when I need to go to a nearby city or for some people that work in the industrial area in the suburbs. Even for the small distances many people decide to take their cars because they feel more comfortable. But lately I have noticed that more and more people prefer to walk or take their bicycles to go around the city and this makes me happy because I never understood my friends that take the car to go for coffee 4 blocks away from their house.

I can live without a car ,for I like walk in the street ,I like the weather like the fresh air, The gas price is higher day by day , and there are so many cars and buses in the road ,maybe it is even more slower than which I go by car. Of course I have not so much money to cost a car expense. A lot of my friends have cars. Do things happy and enjoy life!

yes! i think so..we can live without it. i thinks it's already a want not a need nowadays. but for those people who are in business it is very useful.. but for those people who use it just for there strolling i don't think so.. gas is very expensive. in korea/ japan, bike/motorbicycle is one of their mode of transportation. besides having a car can contribute only to air pollution if not properly maintained.

Air pollution due to cars is a major issue especially in crowded cities. It is very good that you have included bicycles in your everyday life at your country, I wish this would happen here as well.
22 May 12
Having a car nowadays really needs lots of money to spend. If you think it is not really necessary for you then you will take the other option that you like too just like bicycle. But if you think that having a car is more advantage than having the bicycle then you must have the car. Maybe just balance it if which is more advantage for you. :)

It has advantages and disadvantages, for example it is fast but there are parking issues. It is still very expensive though to maintain a car in a good condition. I remember a few years ago, every member in the family had its own car. Now, because of the crisis people can't afford having 2-3 cars in a family so they just keep one and sell the others. Personally, I like cycling and I enjoy going out with my bicycle. It is less stressful and expensive for me and I only consider taking the car if it is raining a lot or if I want to travel.
