Have you thought to....

I have been attending a LOT of business courses and learned a lot about saving money. I am wondering if my fellow MyLotters have thought to ask for additional discounts on things they are buying. I do that a LOT! It sounds kind of presumptuous but it does work. I have bought a leaf blower at over 75% off the original selling price because it was on clearance and didn't have the guarantee paperwork or instructions with it. I have gotten paper for my various projects for free because part of it was damaged and I knew that the damaged portion wouldn't make a difference in the project. I have gotten sheets of wood at half price or less because of scrapes or other damages. I even have gotten costume jewelry for a discount because of the fact that maybe a stone was missing (and I could replace the stone from my collection for pennies). I also have used it on clothing missing buttons, with a small tear along the seam, a bit of grease or other dirt that I could clean with some lift off (it's a cleaning solution that is a staple in my laundry and cleaning cupboard). It is so worth a try. I have gotten discounts from between 10% to 100% (that was for the sheet of scrap booking paper that I got a couple of weeks ago.) Why pay full price for something that is damaged and you can either fix or work around the damage. I have done it for years when I buy fabric for various sewing projects. With the fabric I either get a discount or a quarter to a half a yard thrown in...or a monetary discount. So, give it a try. The worst that can happen is that they won't give you the discount. The best that can happen is that you will save some money.

Very good idea! I have used it a time or two, but not regularly and I'm thinking maybe it's an idea to use all the time. Way to go, dear friend. Hugs, Maggie

Hi lady! I have been worrying about you and was about to email you to see if you were okay. I know how tough it is to go through what you're going through right now. It's great that you came on the lot! You really ought to try it more. It is a ton of fun, and it saves a bunch of money. I miss the ability to haggle with store owners like I did in Thailand. I can get some of that same fun here in the States by looking for discounts and haggling for them at various stores. I even use the logic of the cost of shipping items back to the warehouse for credit...that usually gets me the discount.

Sorry, I'm not doing very much these days. I slept 22 hours yesterday and then all night until 8:30 this morning. Getting up is harder and finding anything of interest is even harder. Maybe later I will be back to something resembling normalcy.

I tend to buy second hand, where there isn´t a great deal of scope for asking for a discount because something is not perfect. I often ask for a bulk discount at the market though. If I buy two of those, can I have those free type thing.

Like you I buy a lot as second hand items. I even find fabric at the thrift shops and that is great as well. I buy in bulk at some stores here and always save when I do.

I usually buy second hand, but the second hand stores have gotten out of sight on the prices of their clothing and many other items. I can often find the clothing at our local department store on sale for less than I can buy it at the thrift shop. Plus if I can find a dirt spot or other problem I can get an additional discount so it is even cheaper. I only feed myself, so buying in bulk doesn't work too well for me. I do buy larger packages of the foods I use a lot and will freeze the extra. But for a lot of the day to day things I find that buying in bulk just doesn't work.

if something is damaged, i will most definitely ask for some sort of discount but mostly, i shop at thrift stores so this is pretty easy to do. i will ask at a big box store, if there is something that i like that is damaged but i often just pass it by.

Don't pass over anything that might have a scratch, ding, or other imperfection. I always go for blood when I shop!! I've even gotten discounts at Wal Mart. NEVER NEVER NEVER be afraid to ask for a discount no matter where you go. I have gotten them not only at Wal Mart but also Nordstroms, Nieman Marcus, Macy's and more places. They want your money, and if they are going to get it, they will knock money off the purchase...especially when it is something that might be passed over by another shopper. There are a LOT of shoppers who want everything pristine and in excellent condition. So an item that may have a scratch, soil or other problem will sit on the shelf for ages. Plus it is a blemish on the store if there is an item that isn't in prime shape. Don't pass the item by if it is a problem that doesn't matter or affect the useage.

I have. I actually got a comforter set for my daughters full bed, you know the bed in the bag ones that have the sheets and everything. Well The bag had a hole in it. It looked like someone had ripped it to feel the material inside. So I went to the counter and showed them this and the lady said she would put it behind the counter. I asked her if I could buy it at a discount and she said no. I asked her if she was sure and if I could speak to a manager? She was pissy but she got the manager who was happy to sell it even damaged and I got the whole $50 set for $15!

Great job!!! Now if you're like me it turns into a passion and you search for the items that are in a ripped bag, dented box, or a bit dirty. As I said previously, it never hurts to ask. The worst that can happen is that they will say NO. Plus it saves the business the cost of shipping the item back to the warehouse. I always cruise the shops watching for the possibility of discounts. I got my boyfriends new microwave in a box that was damaged on one end. I got it at a discount store with an additional 15% discount!

My family likes to pick on me but I do it at the food store all the time. I mean our store has a shelf for dented up cans and boxes and I score there all the time and my coupons still work on the items to boot. We got pantene shampoo for free yesterday. They all had some sorta spray paint that went through the box on them and they had the small bottle out there for $1 each. I had coupons for buy one get one free as well as 3, $1 off two coupons, so I got 6 of them! FREE

Hiya loverbear, Just been reading how others have managed to get a discount on their stuff how lucky. Wish I could do that here but never mind I find other ways around it as well. I missed out your attending business courses to learn a lot about saving money. I think we could all do with some of those kind of courses here too even if things don´t work that way here at the moment. Not even if you know the people in the Shop personally can you get them to bring the price down they will change it for another but nothing else and at the same price still no discounts. I hope you do well with all those things you learned.xxx

Hello! You have some good ideas here that can help people save money. I like shopping at clearance too, sometimes I find interesting things in small shops that are closing or online with up to 80% discount. I tried to ask for discounts if the clothes are damaged because the stores usually send them back and they don't sell it with a lower price over here. But right now because of the crisis, many store owners are willing to make discounts in order to shop from them, so when I ask they usually offer 20% off the original price in items from their current collections.

When they tell you that they ship the item back to the source, point out to them that the cost of shipping it back will be more than the discount that they will be giving you. I have had store and shop owners state that to me, and I point that out to them...they can't argue with that logic. Usually stores do their shipping through UPS (United Parcel Service) and the cost of shipping through them is huge! I used to ship via UPS constantly until they went wild with raising their rates. Now it is either Fed EX ground or the Postal Service. With the economy in the dumpster, it is much easier to get discounts. They cannot afford to lose customers and their money. It is a huge plus for the shop if the person leaves happier because of a savings. Happy customers tend to tell others about their purchase and their friends will go to that shop to browse or buy items. My most favorite place to shop is a Goodwill outlet store about 50 miles from my home. I can spend between $20 to $30 dollars there and have the back of my station wagon loaded. This last trip I got a new bedspread for my bed in the theme that I want to decorate my bedroom in, a brand new leather jacket that I can resell, and a bunch of items to incorporate into the teddy bears I make. I also have found Starbucks mugs to add to my collection, brand name Christmas Village buildings, antique furniture, a new carpet cleaner, and more. Bill (my boyfriend) loves watching me in the place because he never sees my head, I am always folded over double digging in clearance barrels! I have even found signed artist teddy bears!! Those are a real find because for the most part they are valuable and the stores are now auctioning them off. I have turned a lot of people on to the place, but they walk in and turn around an walk out.

If you are good in finding the real deals then you can discover lots of things in great price. Some people don't have the patience to look through the stuff and find what's really unique. Sometimes I go to small clothing fairs that are organised by the local communities, but I find it difficult to search and find what I like. It is because I get confused with all those things and I don't know what should I buy :) I will definitely try to ask discount next time from the shop owner if I find something damaged or dirty. I had no idea that they have high costs for shipping them back. Thanks for the tip! :)

I have gotten lots of discounts on flawed fabrics, some beautiful stuff in fact. Usually I do not even have to ask, they know that not everyone will do that. I do not recall ever asking for a discount on anything, though. I have shopped places that specialize in scratch and dent type items or flawed items and I save well there.

I haven't done this in a store, but I try when I go to garage sales and most of the time, I fail...For example, my neighbor was selling this outdoor table with 4 chairs last week, for 25.00. I thought I'd ask if they'd take 20.00 and the daughter said he, (meaning her dad), was firm on the price. I bought it anyway, because I knew the chairs themselves were worth that much, but it would have made me feel better if they put 30.00 on it and then take 25.00 so I felt like I got a better deal..lol

Hiya loverbear, Hey I don´t blame you for doing that after all is something is damaged you are right why pay full price for it? My kids have bought clothes paid full price for them without checking them over and when they got home they found a hole here and there and the seams badly sewn as well. Of course it was nothing doing trying to convince them to take them back and at least ask for a change apart from that they did not keep the receipt either of the item they had bought. It does not really work like that here you have a really hard time for them to just change something that is too small or too big for you they don´t make it easy. So if you can pluck up the courage and bargain with them then I say that is very brave of you and very wise too. Sales here are getting less and less as well and if they do have any sales they start them much much later and not really much discount on anything. But I say good for you and keep that going. xxx

WOw, you really are so good in saving money my friend. I too, would always buy when goods are on sale. In public markets, i haggle for the prices the vendor would tell me. I feel happy whenever i have saved even a small amount from what i bought. Makes me proud of myself.
