Why John Edwards may go free

It seems that in the Campaign Finance Law the politicians slipped in a get out of jail free card. The law states that to be found guilty the politician had to know that they were violating the law. Not only does the Prosecutor need to prove the crime was committed but they also have to prove that the politician knowingly and willfully committed the act. It is very difficult to prove that someone knew or did not know something at a certain time. You and I can not make that claim, it is a legally established principal that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Many people feel that this was a very deliberate act because the politicians knew how complicated the law becomes and did not want to get caught if they did not understand the law. It is amazing that the politicians can exempt themselves from the law. This is the problem that was created by having career politicians. They have become the ruling class and feel they can do what ever they want.

I just began a discussion about the verdict that came down today. As you now know, John Edwards has walked. It is unlikely that the government will retry. Should the government have tried him at all? It cost us, the taxpayers, millions of dollars. Jphn Edwards engaged in very bad and immoral behavior but did he commit any crimes? Thank goodness that he did not get elected President.

I was under the impression that two witnesses stated that the funds given to him were a gift and weren't a contribution to his campaign. I think that is technically where he gets off. From what I understand of the case, they had to prove that Edwards actually used funds designated for his campaign.
