Skydiving as a team-building exercise

Today I read an article about a company that offers their employees free sky diving courses. They use those courses as a team-building exercise. They also offer their employees those courses because they think the employees will build their self-confidence. They think that it will be easier for the employees to call new customers etc, because it will seem less challenging than skydiving. The skydiving courses aren't compulsary, the employees are free say to no if they don't wish to participate.
What do think about skydiving as a team-buiding exercise? Would you participate if you got that kind of offer from your employer? Have you participated in other kinds of team-building activities? Which kind of activities?

hi porcospino.
that is a very luxurious and extravagant way to have a team-building exercise. i'd want to sign up and be employed in this company if i had the chance considering that taking sky diving courses is very expensive. where do i sign up? lol!
here in our country, team building exercises are very common. most team building exercises are eating and drinking sessions. others spend a weekend in some resort or beach. here in my office, the usual team building activities that we have are going out for foods and drinks. we usually go to a recommended restaurant and try the restaurant's signature dish. we've also included a participating to a couple of outreach programs as part of our team building activities.
cheers and happy mylotting porcospino!

lol at me trying to learn danish!
not knocking myself off as i'd love to learn a new language but i doubt i'll be able to learn oral and written danish and be good enough to be hired. lol!
anyway, i think team building activities are generally similar across different companies and countries except for stand-out ones like this skydiving activity. i'm on the same boat as you as i would never think twice about accepting an offer like this from my employer. earn a salary and at the same time get to indulge in an otherwise expensive activity that only the rich can afford? well, why not? i'll surely take up the offer!
cheers and happy mylotting!!!

You can apply, but you would have to learn Danish first
Yes, it is a very luxurius team-building exercise. It is quite unusual, and I think that is a reason why they decided to write a newspaper acticle about it. The company think that it is worth the money and that the employees will be able to learn something important from this kind of exercise and that they will be able to use the things that they have learned in their work. I have never gotten that kind of offer in any of my jobs, but I would definately have said yes if my employer had offered me a skydiving course
In my country team activities are also quite common. They often consist of different assignments where the employees have to work together and do different kinds of practical things together in order to improve team work, creativity, trust, communication etc. I have never participated in any of those activities, because my employers have never arranged that kind of activities, but some of my friends have tried it.

OMGosh Yes! Definitely I would participate. I think it's great. What kind of company is it that offers this...and for free yet. The place I work for would never offer such a thing. Well, maybe a lot of the people wouldn't participate either. I asked some of my co-workers if they wanted to try hang gliding with me and they thought I was a complete nut. Some people just don't have a sense of adventure I guess.
I can see how it would be a great team building exercise. Our company does offer a "retreat" where they spend a day at a camp and do so-called fun team building things. They pair you off or put you in a team, usually with employees that you don't know so well and have things like 3-legged races that require co-operation and a team effort. However, I have not yet participated in one of these exercise and I have no desire to. Give me sky diving any day over that!
How about you, have you ever participated in something like that?

The places where I have worked haven't arranged that kind of activities. Actually we haven't had any team-buildings activities at all, but if I was got the chance to try skydiving I would participate. I would like to try it and I have thought about it before, but it is quite expensive, and I can't afford it at least not at the moment. I think that it would be amazing to get a free skydiving course, but I guess have I have chosen the "wrong" type of job
The people who got that offer worked in a company that sells dictionaries, and I don't have a sales job.

this is going to be a very good team building activity, building more than rapport between team members but also trust and taking the leap! =) well if you take the context and put it in a lay man's term, you would actually be teaching the employees to take a chance, take the jump and enjoy the ride while at work.. and be strategic not to fall on your face! If our company would provide for everything for this kind of team building, i would participate with no second thoughts. =) haha if not well i still have to save for this experience.. it is a bit pricey, i think.

I also think that it is good team building activity. I read the article about the company that had decided to offer their employees skydiving courses, and it sounds like the employees that accepted the course really learned something from the experience. It was only a relatively small group of employees that actually accepted the course, the rest of the employees weren't interested. I would have said yes if someone had offered me a free sky diving course, because it is one of the things that I would love to try. Unfortunately it is quite expensive, and I don't have the money to pay for it, at least not at the moment.

Hi Porcospino,
it is a fantastic idea to make confidence. I think it is better to accept this offer so that the employees will know skydiving. To attract the customers it is necessary to know salesmanship and marketing. There is course about these subjects. However the employees of the said company should not miss the opportunity to learn skydiving.

If I was one of those employees I would have accepted the course. Skydiving courses are expensive and if I got the chance to get a free course I wouldn't turn down the offer. It would be a challenge to try something like that, but I am sure that I would learn something from the experience, and I think that it would be a good team building exercise. I read the article about the people who participated in the course and they were happy that they had accepted the offer, because they had learned a lot from that course and they had gained self-confidence from the activity.

I'll participate, of course. Why we don't join? Skydiving is the best sport for team-building.

Skydiving can be a daredevil task to do and if combined to a company activity particularly team building can be more challenging thing to get involved. I would sign in to have skydiving course, if given the chance. See, I'm afraid of heights but who knows I can conquer my fears. As long as I'm assured of proper orientation and training, I would do that activity, even how impossible as it seems for me. By attending this company-driven course,I can involve more myself to our company's vision-mission thing, and by engaging to this kind of activity, it serves it's real purpose.
I have a day job and my company initiated several team buildings for the past few years that I attended. We have those games and sports, also trekking. We learned here the value of cooperation and being one towards our company's goal.

I think it is great that you are willing to try it despite your fear of heights
It would be a real challenge, but I am sure that you would learn something from the experience and it feels great to conquer your fear and do something that you never thought that you would be able to do. I also like to challenge myself. I am not afraid of heights, but I like to challenge myself in other ways. I was afraid of public speaking so I decided to make a speech. I was really scared, but I managed to finish the speech and that felt really good. In my job we don't have the kind of team buildings activities that you described, but I would like to try it.
