Do you know the term? Is it fans of a particular movie or book who write their own version or a new chapter? I don't know. What is fan fiction? And have you ever written one?

Yes! Read gobs, & written several! Technically it's illegal, but most people who make the films, TV shows & books ignore fanfic, as they know the writers are (A) too broke to go after, & (B) actually responsible for revving up interest in the original product! There are tons of stories free on the net, but at least as much available in print. Enjoy! MP

Very interesting response Maggiepie. That explains things. I wonder if the powers-to-be will get tired of it though and go after somebody. Hope not.

Few have, & with small success. Usually it's only done as a warning to really egregious cases, to warn others not to push the pros too far. Not for money, MP

Oh, Fan fiction. Yes, I've written fan fiction. In the distant past. While fan fiction can be fun, I think it's one of the lowest ends of writing. It's basically you taking someone else's story, characters, and setting, and playing around with their characters and their world to create a story to your liking and the liking of other fans. My sister writes fan fiction all the time, and I roll my eyes!

Yes, it does seem you're using someone else's creations, characters and whatnot. Still, maybe fan fiction writers have actually written better works than the original author. It's a thought.

Ehh... it's a subjective thought. That I largely disagree with. The majority of fan-fiction is shoddy. A large number of mainstream fiction writers oppose fan-fiction. George R.R. Martin, author of Song of Ice and Fire, has written a number of great arguments against it.

Fan fiction is when a fan of a book or movie writes a story of their own using the characters and their personalities from the book/movie. Most of time it's completely unrelated to the actual story in the book/movie. It's just what fans want their favourite character to do. For example if there were a guy and a girl in the original story that the fan would like for them to be together, then he can write his own story with the two of them being a couple even if they never get together in the original story. Personally, I've never written any but I've read a few and they can be quite interesting sometimes.

It does sound like a very interesting genre to tackle. Just for the fun of it, I guess. Can't be a very lucrative career though.

It's not a complicated concept..fans of tv shows and movies who feel there are directions their favourite characters could or should be taking that are not being addressed in the show (if the show is still running) or were missed out if the Show is no longer airing, take the writing into their own hands and share the results with friends..if popular enough, the work gets a following by other fans who enjoyed it..You name a franchise, somebody's probably got a fanfic going..

Ah, nice explanation. I always have my own version of which direction a character should go. And if a favored show went off the air I would love to keep writing new episodes. As long as I didn't get sued over it.

That's one drawback of the fanfic experience..fan writers could be coming too close to a story arc that the paid writers are working on,and legal wrangles end up taking place as a result! (from both sides-) I think as long as there's a disclaimer that no copyright infringement was intended in writing the story, and giving credit where due to the franchise and Series creator,no harm is being done... My own Mylot ID itself refers to a fanfic concept within Joss Whedon's Firefly/Serenity story that got cut short by the series cancellation..there's a lot of stories still to be told in that particular 'verse..and some are being written now.. Thanks for BR!

Fan fiction means a fan making his/her version of some other people's work--thus, it's a fiction. I don't think I've ever written one. And even though I want to write my own story, I don't think I would wish to use some other people's work as the base.

And it seems like it would not be legal. I suppose it would be fun if you get an instant following to read your stuff but it's still based on someone else's work. Even so ... very interesting.

It really is illegal if published and claimed to be another person's characters and settings instead of the original author/creator of the actual plot. If you had read fan-fictions, those fans really disclaim their work before or after the story itself. It really is interesting reading stuff of what could have happened if the characters of a certain story had really took another course of action instead of the one they took on the original story. Or been in a situation that a fan/writer projected. Honestly, sometimes, the fans' works are way better than the original author's. You could say that I am a fan of fan-fictions as well.

I had wondered this very thing, gtargirl. This has been an interesting Discussion. Do you think that the sequal to The Wizard of Oz, 'Wicked' qualifies as Fan Fiction? I have often played around with writing a sequal to one of Richard Backmans' (aka, Stephen King) books. I wonder if this would be fan fiction as well? Thanks for this interesting Discussion!

That is very interesting. What even qualifies for fan fiction? I have not seen 'Wicked' but that indeed is a great question. I would say if fan fiction is taking an already existing story, then take a few characters and write your own version of who they are and what they wind up doing in life ... well then, that would be fan fiction. Never even considered something like 'Wicked.'

I agree. There are so many good writers. Do these people actually get paid writing fan fiction?

Hey there, how are you? Anyways the term Fan Fiction, yes that it can be fans of a particular movie or show or book and write their own make believe or version of a story. I've used to read fanfics and wrote a fanfic. But here's a site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_fiction that explains more of fanfiction. So if you watched a movie like Harry Potter, and made up your own story using the Harry Potter characters, that is fan fiction. Another site to read and know fanfics is http://www.fanfiction.net I hope this helps.

Thanks for the links webgirl. I had a suspicion that's what fan fiction was but I always thought it would be illegal to use other people's work in any form. Very fascinating.
