Sometimes the republican crowd are for unfettered, totally unregulated capitalism (and perhaps one or two somewhere in the world, as claimed, are for doing away with society safety nets).. But! Ideally, the people would regulate business by their buying and boycotting power, however, the people cannot be trusted either, the proof being the vast popularity (thus proliferation) of things less than desirable in its effect upon society. What to do, what to do.. The right, at times, wants to regulate personal choices, and the left, at times, wants to be in control of the economy and business. What (some) christians, for instance, and some libertarians understand, is that all humans are fallible, thus no one or no group should be overseers over any of these things and therefor, limitations upon power and reach, are what guarantee the most for safety. Are their forces, do you think, in(?) or upon the modern world that seeks to keep the two (left and right) from dialogue?

Let's get something straight. Republicans want smart regulation. Anti-monopoly law-example of smart legislation. EPA telling farmers not to create dust - example of stupid regulation.
Yes, we are well aware of what happens when the majority of one party has the power. It has happened very recently, in fact the first two years of President Obama's Presidential term. No Federal Budget, unfettered spending and a possibly unConstitutional health care law.
Yes, humans are fallible. That's why there are three branches of Government in this country. To provide that check and balance.

Smart regulation is the way to go. Make sure that the consumer has choices. The Government should not limit the choices nor should the "protect us from ourselves". Government subsidies should be ended and so should tax breaks unless they apply to all people and every business. As to safety nets there should a time limit and should not be a situation where you are paid not to work.

It is, as you suggest, a balance of powers that is most beneficial in a nation. A free press balances the power of government. Unions (I mean proper unions as in Europe not the mob run affairs I am led to believe you have state-side) balance the power of business. However, global corporations power exceeds that of governments to check and operate effectively outside law and any regulating power

Power is what keeps the left and right from dialogue. Both want it, but how can you have the power if you compromise?

And there ARE some things you should NOT compromise on.

You are spot on! Balance is absolutely needed. And it used to be possible and what was done in America.
But now we see an imbalance. Those who want their 'special interest' or their 'agenda' in place are lying, name calling, demonstrating with violence and hate and using unethical means to make sure their way of running the country is in place. I have never seen America more polarized, more divided than it is right now.
I believe as a conservative, that some things are worth saving. I have no problem with some liberal ideas though. Like a safety net for those who truly need one. But I do not believe in taking from those who have been successful to give to those who won't even try. I think the majority of Americans feel the same. We need to return to that balanced way. Unfortunately, the left is very militant and determinded to upset the balance. And the right is pushing back with all their might, what else could be done? If we want to live in an America where all have a chance, we cannot become a nation that favors only one.
