Next week, I will be going to my 50th high school reunion in Boston. I will be taking Amtrak from Texas to Chicago where I will have several hours to sightsee until Amtrak leaves for Boston. Have any mylotters taken the train from Texas to Chicago or from Chicago to Boston? I will be staying in a budget hotel in the now trendy South End of Boston for several nights and then go to my reunion in Dedham. I have not been to Boston since 1985 and am going strictly as a tourist. I had to send for tourist information because so much has changed. Has anyone been to Boston recently? Any tips or suggestions? How about Chicago. I will have several hours in Chicago on my way to Boston. I hear that the Amtrak station is really nice and that the neighborhood around Amtrak is also nice. Any tips or suggestions for someone who will be spending about 6 hours in Chicago? I will have my iPad and plan to continue my lotting although it will probably be less than if I were on my computer at home.

I have no experience with Boston or Chicago. You seem to have such a good time traveling around. I imagine that some of Boston will look familiar even though it has been about twenty five years since you have been there. Be safe, and be in touch, but have a really wonderful time.

Yes, some will still be very familiar but Boston has been getting renovated. I call it remodeling. There are all kinds of new things to see and discover. But some of my old favorites are still there. The ocean is still the ocean. I will go to one of the beaches at least one time. I plan to visit The Museum of Fine Arts which I have been to many times but on the new side, I am going to walk The Rose Kennedy Greenway which did not exist when I was last in Boston.

Hello friend, My 50th high school reunion was in Houston this year in May. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend. I know I'd be a tourist in Houston. Haven't been there other than drive through since 1969. With hubby's illness it wasn't possible to attend. The last time I was in Chicago was in the mid 1990's and I know it has changed even since then. I wasn't there very long either; it was interesting but wintertime. I think I'd much rather be there in summer. I've never been to Boston. Hope you have a wonderful trip, and let us know how lovely your reunion is. Unfortunately, from my online alumni page not any of the friends I had in high school are alive today. I knew a lot of the class, but wasn't friends with very many of them. Frankly, for me, the reunion would have been an excuse to visit Houston again but I don't know anyone there personally anymore. Would have been fun to see how the city had changed from 3 million to over 8 million that live there today. I'm sure you will find a lot of changes. Thanks for the discussion!

I lived in Houston for a year during mid 1982 - 1983. Although it was an interesting city, I found it on the rough side, especially compared to Austin. I spent a couple of months in Chicago in the 1970's, another real interesting city but also a bit on the rough side. That is the problem with major metropolitan areas. They are so interesting but tend to be on the rough side. I went to an all girls high school. Over 160 of us are gathering for the reunion. I will be my lotting during my vacation although probably not as much. I will also be using my iPad and it is not as easy to mylot from my iPad. Boston is a wonderful city. It is like a mini New York. I love the area and might consider moving back but for the winter.

Wow a train ride! That is so much fun. I haven't taken the train to Texas but I have gone from DC to New Orleans. It was the best trip ever! I'm so jealous. I want to visit Chicago! As for Boston, I have only been once and it wasn't my choice. And it was back in 1983. My orchestra , highschool orchestra went to Boston for a competition. My mom told me I was going. I had a terrible time. if I ever go back , I would Have , have to go to Fenway! Since my trip I have become a member of Red Sox Nation.I hope you have a good time!

In 1985, I took the train from new Orleans to Boston. We went through Washington D.C. so it was the same train that you took going in the opposite direction. When we got to New York, the train became a sort of local. It was a weekend and all the students were going home. They piled in and stood from New York City to Boston in a packed train like a subway. I have had good experiences and bad experiences on Amtrak. I am hoping that this will be a good one. Boston is a great city. I am sorry that you did not have a good time. I hope that you will try again. I am not a sports fan but I always root for The Red Sox. We love our Red Sox.

If I ever get there I will have a good time! This time it will be My choice to go! I'm into hockey more than baseball but I hate, hate the Yankees so in 2003 or so when I realized that the Red Sox hate the Yankees just as much I Had to root for them. And to think I was just in time to see them win the World Series Twice! I didn't get to Fenway on my first trip the Reason to go the next time Is Fenway.

My zaydee or zeda (grandfather) was a tailor to The Red Sox as well as the infamous Mayor Curley. This was before I was born. I will not be going to Fenway Park but I have quite a list of must do stuff. How do you spell zayda or zaydee? You know what I mean.

Wow, since 1985, it was more than 20 years. There should be a lot of change in Boston already. Honestly, I never been to Boston myself also, and I would encourage my friend to go with me, and trying to sightsee the surrounding too. So, are you going solo? I would more likely to go with my friends rather been alone though. I hope that you will have fun on your school reunion.

I love traveling alone. I also am 67 years old and have very few people in my life at this point. I will be spending a few days alone in Boston but there will be over 160 females at the reunion. I went to an all girls school. Boston has changed considerably since I was last there win 1985. I have been reading the tourist information and am looking forward to playing tourist in the city that I was born and raised in. It's a great city.

I'm afraid I won't be much help. I haven't been to Boston since 1989 when my husband was on contract in Worcester. We played tourist in the area for about two weeks, seeing mostly historical places like Sturbridge Village, Salem and Plymouth. We only spent about two days seeing things in the city itself. We took the walking tour (in July). It was hot and I had an orthopedic shoe on for the history walk since I had a broken toe. Bummer! I have only been outside the O'Hare airport on one trip -- a business trip in 2000 to Book Expo. It wasn't in the best part of town, and one night I was lost looking for my rented car in the wrong parking lot at midnight. I had parked there because the friend giving a ride back from a meeting had said to park in a certain lot, and when I parked in the morning, I wasn't sure where that lot was. I saw a lot and asked the guy motioning people in if it were that lot and he said yes, evidently just to get me to park there. He lied. Fortunately the friend who brought me back to the lot waited. When he saw I hadn't found my car he found me and we finally went to the lot attendant who told us there was another lot two blocks down. I'm lucky to be alive, since McCormick Center isn't in the very best neighborhood. I was living with a home school family during my week in the area for the convention and commuting 40 minutes from the suburbs each way. I had not time to do anything touristy, but did see a few places I might like to explore along the lake. The truth is, I hate being in cities. I hope you have a great time at the reunion and being a tourist. Do a search on Squidoo and HubPages for articles by people who currently live in the areas you will be visiting. You will probably get some good tips. Be sure you take lots of pictures to share with us. Have fun. I hope the trains are better now than when I took one to Galesburg in 1967.

Worcester is in Western Massachusetts which is beautiful country. I remember Worcester as being a poor and run down community but I believe like a lot of other such communities, it is being revitalized or has been. It seems like you saw a lot of beautiful and interesting places around Boston. Boston is a great and as you know very historical city. Lots of rich history. Glad that you saw some of it. I spent about two months in Chicago around 1970. it was a real interesting and exciting city but rough like many metropolitan areas. I am looking forward to spending a few hours there around the very nice neighborhoods that surround Amtrak. I have taken Amtrak many times in the 1980's, all over The United States. There are always problems but I love trains and I love seeing the country. However as with the airlines, things have deteriorated since 911 and our ongoing recessions. Routes have been cut. Equipment has gotten older. Staff has gotten ruder. Other passengers have been more of a problem. I am hoping that this trip is a pleasant one.

Bostonphil going to Boston for a school reunion? :) You are a Texasphil now :) It is nice to be able to meet again mates who were with you in school when you were growing up. I always think that reunions of all sorts are emotional and always thought provoking. When we were in school, all of us were equal in the starting pad. But since we went out and had our own separate lives, the difference is vast in each individuals of their career, family, etc I prefer to meet my school mates in private to revisit the times of our past.
