I have seen it on tv, and also seen peoples stockpiles on youtube. Do any of you have success with this? I find that it is very hard, and you have to stay very organized, and it is very time consuming.

Hello Lmfisher666
I have seen these extreme couponing television shows of which you speak. As you say, doing this does seem extremely time consuming. What baffles me, though, is where are the grocery stores?!? I have never seen a grocery store that would allow this sort of couponing. Also, where do they get all the coupons? Do they have to buy newspapers? Do they steal the newspapers? I am vexed about the whole thing.

I'm not sure what you mean. Just about every store takes coupons. There usually is not a limit to how many you can have. They usually get their coupons from a clipping service online.

Clipping service is more effective if you are extreme and looking for bulk.

In my area there are often limits placed on how many coupons can be used at a time, Lmfisher666.
It is good that you have friends with whom you can do such activities, stowyk.

Several years ago I purchased 300 boxes of cereal not all in the same trip and donated 100's of boxes to Food Share. Felt so great getting them all for free. This was at a time stores were allowing doubling of 3 like coupons and I had other family members get cereal.
Now stores in this area have limits on many products, as to many people in this area were buying large numbers at one time, so many people would have to get rain checks. I understand why stores have these limits, as one lady in my area did a shopping trip with television cameras following her around to see just how low she could get the bill.

I have noticed on the COUPON that it states only a certain number of like coupons may be used at once. They also say "Do Not Double" and I noticed just 2 weeks ago when I used some, they say "Store does not pay in excess of price" meaning, if the item is 99cents and you use a $1 off coupon...the store just gives you the item for free and does not give you the penny in change.
I have noticed the stores on the show are all in the midwest...you won't find a store on the west coast that will do this! Most of them don't even have double coupons except for maybe a day or two through the year, and usually they just say "double up to 10 coupons" as their store limit.
I have been couponing for 35 years...back in the day it was great..the coupons were for decent values. Today..90% of what I see is like "30cents of 3 cans" or just 10cents off a can..and another brand is cheaper without a coupon! The values are just to small to bother with. Now granted, if I happen to need 3 cans of something.. I"ll use the coupon, but most of the time.. I don't even bother as 30 cents isn't going to make me or break me and I always know that I can move down the isle and find a cheaper brand.
I have searched and searched for WHERE they find these dollar off coupons but no ones seems to know...or at least are not telling us! I know about the sunday circulars, but I get 2-3 papers every sunday (for different areas) and I"ll go through those circulars and maybe cut out 4-5 coupons. The rest, is stuff I have no use for, don't need or want or are just bothersome low values. I went on line and found a few sites to print htem out but after awhile, the coupon program became not acceptable to my computer..don't know why, nothing changed, other than the fact that I think, they only want you to use them for a period of time and then kind of ban you off them. But again, the dozens and dozens these sites have...I printed out maybe 10 and once at the store.. another brand was cheaper without a coupon! And even then they weren't that great.. I'd print out one for Yoplait yogurt....40 cents off 8. Well, I always used that as I buy it anyway and it is usually 8 for $6 or something like that. Affordable on its own, and the coupon is just for 40 cents so I use it anyway. But other than that, not to many I use there either.
I think this extreme couponing has really tarnished the coupon world for the rest of us. Their greediness has cost those of us just trying to make ends meet and make our grocery budget go farther a lot of valuble savings.

Yah those shows are interesting. But I don't know why the stores limit this stuff, they get more product sold that way and they get their money from the manufacturer.

Yes coupling has changed over the years. There are still ways to get the most out of coupons tho. It takes a lot of time and effort, that Is why I don't do it.

It's not over the top, they enjoy getting things for free, who wouldn't. What you mean this week? they buy a lot more then one thing, I have seen them buy all kinds of foods and other things, and often they donate to food banks and homeless shelters, so there is no discrediting them. They do a great thing.

I have started trying to save as much money as I can by getting coupons, and I have to say that I have managed to save a fair amount so far. One of the things that I like to do is to save up some coupons that get you free entry into theme parks, as I can then try to sell them to my friends or family for a fraction of the price that they would have been, but for an amount that would still get me a bit of a profit at the end of it. I have made around £100 in the past couple of months from doing this, and I know that I would continue to do so if I could make the same amount of money again.

That's the idea, to start out small until you get the hang of it then go big.

I know a couple of people who save money on things like toiletries and what not. Those things I can see why you'd want to save money on and buy in bulk...However, buying tons of food at once makes no sense unless you're going to donate it. Half of it will just go bad before any normal human gets to devour it.

Yes I agree. Some you can freeze, and you should donate what you can't use in time. Lots of extreme couponers do.

I am also a new couponer, and have had a few great shopping trips. I ususally hit the stores (if they are open) at 6:00am and it usually takes me a couple of hours.
I used to be a little embaressed, but when I was shopping I noticed alot of those books of coupons in alot of carts around me. So I felt more comfortable knowing that are alot of people in my area who also do this.
I am just glad to save money for my family, makes surviving in this economy alot
easier.

Yes it helps in this economy, and so what if people that are in line behind you don't like it they can wait.

It doesn't work around here - there are a lot of rules with coupons, stores don't double coupons, etc. But I have gotten some pretty good deals with coupons, so I keep an eye out for any that apply to things I buy, and my husband has managed to find a few good ones too.

I definitely do believe in using coupons because you are able to save a lot of money by using coupons. However, I don't think that it is necessary to go to the extreme that the people on television do with their couponing.
For me, I aim to try to always save at least 40% when I make a shopping trip because of the fact that we don't have a lot of money to spend. However, I don't think that I could ever go to the extent of buying 10 or more
