Breakfast

Today is the official first day of summer so I went out for breakfast... out to my back yard, that is. The strawberries are slowing down but I still managed to gobble down half a dozen or so small ones. Then on to the raspberry patch. Only a couple ripe ones today. Now for the "back 40"... square feet, that is. The blackberries were more giving and I ate my fill. I suppose I should pick the rhubarb but it's too hot for baking (31°C!!) So, what's your garden doing?

I wish I had a garden, but I can't tend it even if I had one, I can't bend. You have my mouth watering for all those berries.

I love berries. Nuts and berries, roots and twigs...

Strawberries and tomatoes will grow in hanging pots, if you have a balcony at your new place. Too late for this year of course, but something to think about for next spring.

Got a bit of sunburn at the top of my back where I forgot to put sunscreen a few days ago. Now it's peeling. Other than that and arthritis, I'm ok.

LUCKY YOU! My garden is stalled, stagnating...in the hopes that the sun will make an appearance..by at least tomorrow, the first day of summer! Here in the Gulf Islands (off the Coast of B.C.) we have just set the record for the coldest June since 1952..Welcome to Junuary! All berries--bright green..tomatoes still in greenhouse, along with peppers! Basil..just sitting there! BUT, the Garlic, Peas, Beans, etc., are just loving this cool, cool weather!! I am sincerely jealous! We had a burst of hot weather in mid-May, so I harvested and froze the rhubarb! Otherwise, we have been overwhelmed with "Tent Caterpillars" that have destroyed every leaf on every fruit bearing tree...so no tree-crops this year! Just not a happy gardening year, here!

And the tree crops in Ontario were hit with frost after early warm weather, so we won't be having much of that, either. Used to be, the Gulf Islands were near-paradisical. And we used to have winter here in Ontario but now you have it. Wot happened?

No, the Annapolis Valley is in Nova Scotia. This is the Golden Horseshoe area, around the southern tip of Lake Ontario. Then there's the Niagara region with all the wineries...

Ouch...no tree-crops here, and none in Ontario..we know where the price of fruit is going this winter! We have the Okanagan, and is it your Annapolis area that is the biggest fruit bearing area? I do have a client whom lives in Dinnick (and has a family home here--for generations)...so we connect often, and I was so jealous of your weather..I quite often watch TO news and Boston..and you now are in the midst of another heat wave.....and YES, you virtually had no winter! Gulf Islands...NOW ..PARADISE LOST!! We are now bedroom communities of the "rich and famous" causing the demise of the true communities! I am one of the rare breeds left..of the lower middle-class..LOL!

More strawberries and raspberries that I can cope with at the moment. I've been giving them away but I suppose I should knuckle down and make some jam. I should cut some rhubarb too, but it looks so lush and lovely that I don't want to spoil it!

I know what you mean about not wanting to spoil the look of the rhubarb.

The weather has been frustratingly cool (with a lot of rain) up until recently so my raised flower bed er..hasn't got many flowers growing in it. However, my lilies have lots of buds on them so I'm hopeful they will actually come out in the next two weeks..and they're about 2 months late as well, which gives you an idea of how cold it's been.

That's terrible! I'd gladly send you 10°C if I could. It'd still be warm enough for me at 21°C.

My apricots, which normally ripen in June, are still small green balls. The I didn't plant any vegetables -- just a few herbs and only half of them are doing very well. The herbs in pots and the root cuttings I transplanted of sages and carnations are doing well. The weather still isn't up above 55F at night, even though it's sometimes in the triple digits in the daytime. This makes it hard for tomatoes to thrive. I'm glad we have a great farmers market.

I'm not having much luck with beans this year. Or cukes and lettuce, for that matter. But it's finally raining tonight so things should get a good soaking. I noticed a green tomato on my potted Tiny Tims today. I can't wait until it ripens.

My garden is getting overgrown, and being sold to somebody else.

Hi friend, good to hear that you enjoyed a lot with your garden. In our garden we have some veggies and use it for our cooking purpose, we will get more excitement while eating the fruits and veggies from our own garden.
