Right now I am not sure if I have it or not at the college I work at! Our college recently hired a new president to replace the retiring one. Well on Monday the new college president starts his new job. Alot people at the college, especailly in food service are scared of losing our jobs! I fear I could lose my job if the new president decides to bring in a company to do all cooking and their own people! If that happens I and the others could be hired for with less pay or fired completely! This is a big trend in food service in colleges lately! Some colleges have tried it and hated it. Went back to the old system. If this happens we in food service will know with in six months. I do know the new president is a person who will start looking into making changes right away! I pray he doesn't change the colleges food service! If he does I am not looking forword to looking for another job! I have job security now! Health insurance, dental insurnace, three weeks paid vacation, paid sick days, a great boss and I like my job! I don't want to go anywhere!

Oh gosh blue, that sounds just awful...like an axe hanging over your head, ready to fall at any time. To have a job with so much security and that you like as well is not all that common. It would be awful to lose that.

This is awful and the whole college is on edge! Recently one of top college jobs was eliminated and that person who had the job was let go. Last week the head of the Athletic department resigned her job and took the head job of the adult learning program. Alot of people think that was not the person wanted to do but what the new president wanted! Now the new presidnet is telling the food service people no more free coffee drinks from the college coffee shop! No big deal there but what is next? Food service or another department? It sucks and I hope I don't lose my job! I am 50 now and the thought of losing my job and looking for another one scares the crap out of me! I am hoping I will be able to work at the college until I retire! We will see!

I know how afraid and insecure you must be feeling. The guy sounds like an insensitive, inhumane jerk. I hope you get to keep your job...fingers crossed.

A sign of the times eh? Everybody is looking to save money. It seems that in doing so though, they end up spending more in the long run. You're lucky right now to have a job with all those benefits. I work in healthcare and it seems that there are no full time jobs there any more. I work part time, with NO benefits but they schedule me for full time hours, especially during the summer when the full timers are on holidays. Any full time people working there have been there for about 15 years as it is almost impossible to get full time now. It sux but has become a way of life for a lot of us. I hope it all works out for you, either by keeping your job or even getting a better one!

I know of two state colleges that went the way of hiring outside company to do food service. That lasted only one year with both colleges! It doesn't work with all colleges and I can't see it working in the college I work at! Only time will tell if it will happen or not! I hope not! This is the best job I ever have and I hope I don't lose it!

Too bad we don't have unions anymore. They save us from fears like this. They fight for our jobs and securities like you say you think you have. If it were me I might atleast be making some inquiries around. I would have a resume ready to go. I would think positively but I would also be ready just in case. And surely they will give you some time.

I don't think there will be changes immeditaly. If there are it will be with in six months! I am going to do some inquiring around and I am sure other people in food service will be also! Right now we are all on pins and needles! I will keep a postive attitude and will be prepared for the worse,if it comes!

Good idea to inquire around just incase. Never hurts to be prepared.

It never hurts to keep one's resume updated. That is true regardless of whether one feels that one's job might be on the line or not. Employment tends to be much less stable these days than it used to be, and we're also a far more mobile society. Hopefully, your college won't decide to go the route of bringing in an outside food company--both for the sake of your job and for the sake of the students. I think that it is rare for these companies to actually significantly improve the quality of food that is served in the dining hall, and they drain away any quirkiness and standardize things.

I am sure if a food company is hired to do the colleges food, the students and the faculty will not like it! I keep hoping it won't happen! I know of two colleges who tired this but after a year, went back to the old system! I know a friend who is head of food service at a high school who are swithing over. He is not sure if they outside company will hire him! So we will see!
