When we are needing to concentrate

When I was young I would most days find myself concentrating on the necessities of life without the benefit of reading matter. I would starte hard at something in the room. An insect perhaps or if needs must an inanimate object. Anything that helped the job be completed. Then I discovered that some people kept magazines and books within easy reach. Suddenly I preferred the seat of others as my mother would not contemplate the existence of the media in such an intimate place. Today I try to maintain a veritable cornucopia of literary material to aid my peristaltic endeavours. Do you keep a book by the loo?

My loo contains a beautifully artist designed poster showing how the loo is to be used, and a photocopy of David Holmgren's permaculture principles. No books, though you are welcome to bring your own.

My mind boggles at a poster explaining how the loo is to be used. What does it say?

When I was younger I did, now I need reading glasses and so there isn't any reason to bother - I can't see it anyway... the roomie keeps a puzzle book, because she's lately had to spend a lot of time there...

A puzzle book seems a good idea, I'd probably forget a pen though!

Out of sight isn't out of mind for me. I think of you often. I've been under a lot of pressure lately and really busy. Our little town is celebrating it's 100th anniversary on the 4th of August, and I've been literally tied up with the preps for that.........and I'm still not over my Dad's passing, especially spending so much time with my Mom and watching her fade away before me eyes. It has not been a good year........but chin up, I'll get through. I always do. Hugs but happy faces back at ya!

Mom always worked on the crossword puzzle. So did Dad. I'm rarely in there long enough to bother, although I do occasionally take my cell phone. Took me a while to catch your drift here, though. I was a bit slow on the uptake! LOL

LOL Well said, p1ke, well said. Yup...I keep books everywhere. They're stacked all over the living room, a few in the bedroom and the "loo" is close enough to the other rooms that I just tote the book to and fro. I don't have many magazines, mainly cooking related ones. But I can read recipes as well as anything else while 'contemplating'.

I also love a good recipe. As one door opens it is important to consider what you will put in the other one....

I always keep a book in my purse for when I am stuck in places waiting such as the clinic, getting my oil changed and things like that. If I just sit there and people watch or stare at stuff I find myself getting tired and bored. You never know when the book will come in handy!! And it is a great way to relax as you sit in the park and read

I thought everyone did. I even have a book entitled 'The Ultimate Loo Book', which is full of random trivia. Having had three children I often found the loo was the only place I could read in peace. I used to keep Mills and Boon books in there to discourage the kids from staying in there too long.

They both block the loo but Mills and Boon are scratchier.

I am not sure that I know the difference between Mills and Boon and quilted velvet......

I like the way you put that. It made me giggle. :) I don't personally keep a book by the loo but my OH keeps several. Then again, he does spend a lot more time in there than I do! However, I sometimes take my 'phone in with me and read Facebook statuses and things! I'm not very good with concentrating at the best of times and find it better to actually be distracted because it makes me relax!

I have a magazine rack in there, chock-o-block full of cartoon books, joke books, regular fiction and computer how to books. They are probably covered in germs but so far so good...nothin' wrong with me

Sometimes toilets are the cleanest rooms in the house! After all more water and soap get sloshed around there than almost anywhere else.

Reading is good habit to increase our knowledge, we can rad casually with concentration. But read attentively will help us to understand the full aspects of a particualr subject.

I have never indulged in this habit. I have never understood the necessity in having reading material in the water closet myself. I like to get in and get out ASAP. Lingering in the room for any amount of time more than is necessary seems very odd to me. The only reason I can see for people having reading material in there is if they have some severe digestion issues that require long stints on the poo sink. I prefer to eat well (as you know) so that it comes out regularly and easily in a short amount of time.

Now that's an interesting thought Bill. Could our desire to read in the loo be because our desire to eat proper balanced food is somewhat wanting?

It could very well be. One thing I have noticed that people leave out of their toilet collections is good wholesome cooking books. That could also be due to a lack of desire to read about the food at the entry level while we are dealing with it at the exit. Who knows? I have also seen in many work places loads of magazines of an adult nature, which I am sure are not there to amuse the workers while they are trying to unleash their build up of leftover foods. More to unleash another build up I feel.

Always! Magazines, books, newpapers and sales circulars. They'd all made it to the loo. Maybe that's why I was so surprised to find out that the popular children's song is called, 'Skip To My Lou' and not, 'Skip To My Loo'.

oh yes, all of the psychoartist's water closets must include a book shelf! one must also read while in the bath.

We don't have a bath; just a huge shower. I have never felt the need to read when showering.
