I Want To Pay

Today the Olympic Torch is coming to my small English City. In a spirit of community minded celebration the local Council has given us free parking all day. They carefull covered up all the parking ticket machines. Not to be discouraged though, some hardy souls have tried to remove the covers and pay anyway!!! Would you pay when you don't have to?

Why on earth would they want to pay? Are they completely mad? There is no way that I would pay. The government already get enough money out of us at all levels, so why not get something free from them for a change. Are you getting along to see the torch? Have you already seen it? It came through too far from me in 2000 for the Sydney Olympics, not sure I would have fought the crowds in order to get a glimpse anyway.

I did see it Bill. The Torch was run right past our road. I will try to put up a picture.

Awesome...looks like a baseball bat though without the top of it in the pic! Did you see the TV footage of the two kids that tried to grab it the other week? I am not sure where it was. But I was surprised at how close they got to it.

That's a nice gesture on the part of your city managers. I think maybe I'd pay, too, just because they were giving me a break when they didn't have to. I wonder if everyone would pay a little bit if the fees were not mandatory? I've never seen the Olympic Torch in person, I hope you'll try to take a picture for us.

Looks like a memorable event! I see that someone was selling souvenir Olympic flames, too. Thanks for letting us share this experience.

Our city claws every penny that it can out of us. If I can photograph it I will.

hi pikey nope not me,if I do not have to, I will gladly not pay.as it is most things are not free,sob,sob . My roommate has Alzheimer disease and she is always asking when I shop for diabetes snacks,"do they give those to you,can I get some free?" "no Kathy I had to buy this, very rarely is anything free"But she lives in her own little world asking me to tell her the date, what time we eat, when can we draw out money"etc etc. I am a mama at 85 to a 82 year old woman. thank God m y son comes to see me on the weekends and I get to talk to someone who is not senile.,but kathy is gentle and kind and s ome people here while not senile are also hard to live with.,also all my great mylot friends are a wonderful support to keep me from being lonely.

We dont have this kind of parking system here in our country, but being a writer with UK background, I could understand what you are talking about. With regards to your question, I wouldn't remove the covers and pay. Hello?! The local Council gave the opportunity as a gift to the motorist. Did you know that in our place. it is considered an insult if you refuse an offer.

I didn't know that. Presdumably it has to be a good offer? If I were to offer to burn down someone's house that might not be quite so acceptable! LOL.

Heck no! They make enough between the parking fees and any tickets they can pass out to people who's time is over. The exception to that is if I'm using a coupon for a free entree at a restaurant. Tips are usually computed as a percentage of meal price, so in this case I factor in the value of the free meal. Waiters/waitresses work for those tips, so I don't feel right not tipping them as if the meal wasn't free.

Typically thoughtful of you. I know how much waiting staff depend on tips.

hi catdla1 thats really sweet of you,I had not thought of that right the wages are not all that great so tips is what they depend on.and too thats not an easy job, on your feet all day like that. after this I will add a tip to if I have a coupon for a free entree

No, I would not pay if I did not have to pay. That reminds me of an incident that happened here, though. Someone won the lottery ... no, not millions of dollars but a substantial amount ... and that person decided to be nice and put money in all the car meters on the street - you know, a king-of "pay it forward" type thing. The meter person happened to be going along issuing tickets and stopped the person when they put money in multiple meters. When asked, the person explained what they were doing, and then they got issued a ticket - apparently it is illegal to be nice and put money in the parking meter of another person's vehicle.

How daft. A law against philanthropy. I hope that the benefactor took it up with the authorities.

Liquorice - It was kind-of funny in an ironic sort of way. I mean, they want the money from the meter, and that is what they were getting, so it shouldn't matter who put it there. P1ke - I am sure that the authorities were contacted, and they pretty much had to get involved, because it was on the news. I doubt that the law was changed, although I think that it is a pretty dumb law in the first place and have no idea what would have prompted it, but after all that publicity I also doubt that the person had to pay the fine, either.

That's very nice of your Council. Ours would be more likely to increase parking prices for the day! I did once almost pay for parking when I didn't have to. I was somewhere I had never previously been. It was a Pay and Display car park but was free on Sundays. As it was on a Sunday, I didn't have to pay but I didn't realise. I did see, when someone pointed it out, that it actually did say that on the machine! Luckily, somebody told me before I put any money in that it was free on Sundays! I suppose, if the machine was covered up, I would check for another machine first but I wouldn't try to uncover them to pay anyway.

There have been many times when I have paid when I need not. Usually on a Sunday. Or sometimes after 6 o'clock in the evening. Just goes to show that we should read the writing on the meter!

OH no! Why would you pay if the city is offering it for free. How fun that the Olympic Torch came through your town. Who carried the torch? Are you excited for the world coming to your country. Will pray for the safety in London and that it will be a most successful Olympic Games. Have fun! I spent a day in London on my way to Australia. Have no clue how that worked out. But I remember having fun and that it was very beautiful.

Seemed strange to me that folk wanted to pay that day too. The Torch is being run in relays round the country with different people carrying it. I have no idea who the man carrying past us was. There is a picture above in one of the other responses. I can't get too excited about it all and certainly don't think that the Olympics will do much for the country. But it's here so good luck to them. Next time come and stay fr a few days. See what the Aussies call the "Old Country".

Well, here in Hamilton (and other places) if a person has a handicap permit they don't have to pay at municipal parking lots and meters. Luckily, my driver has one.

Perhaps they imagined the covered meters to be no more than a sneaky way to trick motorists into inviting heavy parking fines?

Ha ha I love it! How polite and law-abiding. No, I wouldn't pay parking charges if I didn't have to. I would make the most of it and not give any extra money to greedy councils! (As you can proabably tell, we have a big issue with parking round here, where increased parking charges are killing our high streets). Enjoy the torch! (Comes our way on the 25th!)

Um, is it bad that I'm more excited about seeing the torch (and the ensuing celebrations) than I am about the Olympics themselves?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

We have a similar problem. In fact a couple of months ago they reduced the parking charges due to "customer" protest. In truth, the councillors couldn't cope with the deluge of hate mail! I am not that fussed about the Torch but as they will run almost past the hosue I may well go and have a peek.

I think our councillors must be harder-hearted, as they have no problem with, (or are oblivious to) the mounds of hate mail they get. They have also ignored all the local protests. Yes, I'm excited about the torch for the same reason. It's coming near to our house and there are events in our local park when it goes past there. Should be fun.

No, I definitely wouldn't pay for anything I don't have to pay for. I have a Blue Badge anyway, so I can usually find free parking at any time I need it. On a point of interest regarding the Torch Relay, a friend of ours who is a retired policeman is travelling along as security. He's having a great time, and has photos with athletics greats such as Jonathan Edwards as reminders of it all.

No. I won't pay. I pay everything I have to, but when I have a change to save some money I'll do it. Times are hard & we need to save wherever we can.

I normally don't have to pay because I have a handicapped placard that means if I park at a meter I don't pay. Used to feel a little guilty, but not so much anymore...

Hi friend, good to hear that the olympic torch is come to your place, your council is celebrated it in a good way by offering free parking facility, but still some persons are interested in making money and they are getting it from the innocent persons, really their activity is wrong, but what to do? we are in need to pay for our emergency, even though we are not interested in paying it
@p1kef1sh (45681)
11 Jul 12
Indeed. Fortunately the event is entirely free.
