Question...Does my general practioner Dr have to know the name of the other 'specialty' Dr whose performing surgery on me or not? My general practioner DR is pissed at me for not revealing the name of my female surgery Dr. for Tuesday surgery.

Most of the time the other place will ask you where you go to the doctor for GP, even if the GP referred you to them. The two doctor's share information back and forth as to better help you and make sure that they are treating you with allergies and other conditions you may have in mind. It could be the DR. was worried that you may not be telling the other Dr. who is performing your surgery everything, and the DR. doesn't want either anything to happen to you, or he / she to have any repercussions on themselves. Honestly, I think also that the GP gets some sort of recognition or money for referring a dr. in their network....

nailtech if your primary doctor is not doing all he can foryou , its time to change doctors for the primary care doctor. I know I had to as I had one quack doctor who did not know a ruptured tendons in myh foot from a sp rained ankle.cau sing me to finally have to wear a brace on my left foot thats badly deformed.I got the doctor I have now and I am very p leased with him too.

The do have his name I know this for a fact so if they ever need him for something they will find him. They also have asked me about any allergies and stuff so they have that on record now as well. I did tell the Dr everything. But get this, this general practitioner DR says my Thyroid problem is not causing the ovary cyst when in fact I know it could be and this GYN Dr said it could be also. This is another reason why I didn't want him to have anything to do with it, he doesn't have all the facts when taking care of people.

Yes, usually your GP should know the name of your surgeon. It comes in handy for complications or other problems. I always make sure that my GP knows who my specialists are and what they are treating me for plus any medication they have placed me on. This is smart because of the fact that there may be times where a medication is prescribed by one doctor and a different doctor may prescribe one that will have bad interactions with one you are already on. That is why they often ask for the names of the other physicians that are treating you. You don't have to tell the GP the name of the surgeon...but sometimes the doctors may have to communicate with each other about treatment. It is totally up to you which you decide.

The gyn surgeon and the hospital has his name ( I gave it to them) so I figured that is enough info for now. I was planning to tell him later on if needed.

hi nailtech why do you want to keep it secret from your primary care doctor, do you not respect him? if you do you should level with him abouyt any other medical care. a good doctor wants to keep track of any sugeries or other things done by other doctors. usually after surgery with a surgeron he or she will tellyou to get an appt with your primary care doctor to be checked and keep him or her in the loop.I have always done this with my primary care doctor so he can put this in my records. You are not treating your primary care doctolr with much courtesy.

it's not that i don't respect him, however he does have different opinions on some of what i have with my health going on right now, and such. and i was planning to tell him sometime later, in my own time, not before this surgery. plus the fact they have his name in case they need to get in touch with him.

Why would your general practioner be 'pissed' at you? Out of concern for your wellbeing maybe. Its like this.... you are going to build this building and you go out and secretly bring on seperate contracters for each part of the building. So none of them know what the other is doing. Do you really think you will have a good product without getting them all on board and working together? Think of yourself as that building.

Thats the thing, I don't think he was really pissed at me me due to my well being, I thought he was just being nosy as he told my mother to call him even just to talk about me and what they were doing about the problem. If anyone he should ask me to call him and not her. I don't need my mother discussing my health with him, she doesn't even realize this is like against the law to discuss my health with him if I tell her not to. I was going to tell him afterward, in my own time as I'm an adult.

oh dear yes!! all doctors and the nurses have to know all each other does and knows so no mix up will happen with your meds or procedures being done. no one wants to make a mistake and if they dont know all your medical stuff they could make a mistake that costs your life! actually i love my practitioner she is so much better to me then my doctor. seems to know and understand more also. btw, what are you having done?

i don't see how not telling him about this one surgery yet will interfere with any other procedure later on if i tell him about the surgery i had later on. i wasn't going to not ever tell him. i just don't know why he had to know the name of the dr right now when i didn't even have an appt with him lately.

I guess the first question that I want to ask here is why do you not want to tell your GP the name of the specialist that is performing your surgery. Basically the only time that I hear of people that won't share the names of their other doctors with their GP is when they are doctor shopping for medication or something like that. It is important that your GP know all of the doctors that you are working with so that they will be able to have the fullest medical history on you that they are able to have. This is important to make sure that you don't have any medication interactions and things like that.

I wanted to tell him after my surgery, and I don't care for my mother bringing things into her appts that have to do with me every time she goes to him. I thought I was the only one who could initiate when and how to tell my Dr's things.

of course, each and every doctor needs to know the patient's history, what particular procedure are you going into, what type of medications you take or needed. The name of the doctor is very much important if in the case there will be a problem during the surgery. So I think you need to tell your doctor all the necessary information that he needs.

The general practitioner doesn't have anything to do with this upcoming surgery and I planned to tell him myself after the surgery, rather than my mother butting in and mentioning it first a few months ago and again today. No matter what I tell her though, if I say not to discuss me with him she still does it. She doesn't respect what I say or do on many things. Then she says I have to always do what I want (as in a complaint about me). I think she should look at the whole picture and what SHE does too.
