You know you are at an over priced rummage sale when....

You want to fall over laughing at their prices! For kicks me and the kids went bumming to a newer subdivision I had never been to before...... yep a whole 4 houses participating
I'll say the majority of the prices were that of a full price item at a thrift store and on some of the things that may of been generous! KIDS Jeans were $4, tee's $3, Hollister Hoddies $6, Gymbo sets $8 and the kicker VHS TAPES $1.50! IDK about the rest of you but even finding a used VHS player second hand that works is a miracle let alone pay $1.50 for tapes on an obsolete machine.
What are your doozies of over pricing while you were out rummaging?

I think when people have garage/yard sales the item should be
priced to get rid of the items...I would never want to take
all that stuff outside and then have to haul it all back inside.
Thats why I think items should be prices to "GO"..
I thik most people have sales to get rid of stuff, not all
but a lot of people..
Items like VSH tapes...WTH????

I agree people should price it to get rid of it. If they want to make a substantial profit then they should e-bay or consign the items.

I thought that was what a yard sale was for... getting rid of stuff you dont need or want any more! Pricing things high is not going to let you meet that goal! Plus..why go through all that if you don't sell anything!
I am a saler from way back. I have had them and been to them all my life. But today...as you say... people just don't know how to have a sale. $1 for VHS tapes..that is high,....theya re more 50 cents. You can still buy a VHS player for about $30, but..with DVD's having been out and all...I have just watched sales and bought the same movies I have on VHS on DVD. Now I have them forever.
I just recently had a yard sale with my daughter. I live in a "edge of town" area..and the area is about lower middle class, just cause it is away from the city a bit...but right by a golf course! Houses are nice, but we are just to far to drive for a yard sale or even to get the signs out good enough. But we tried.
My daughter had lot of high priced things...she is a spender. She had her stuff priced low and still..it didn't sell. All her clothes did as they were upper pricey clothes and she was selling them for under a buck, but really other than that it was hit and miss. I sold a car seat and a total of $40 worth, but then I didn't have to much anyway as I just move there and got rid of so much before I moved. But her daughter is starting junior high this fall and is getting rid of all her "tween" and kid toys...and those things were priced low and none sold. Stuff like Zhu Zhu pets, My Little pony, Littlest Pet shop stuff...They had a bunch of cell phone cases - Ed Hardy stuff...kitchen stuff for playing "house" and dolls...and none of it sold! I now have some of those things listed on Craig's list and The Recycler...I sold the one kitchen set..(sink/stove and dishes) but other than that..not a single offer on any of it! And it is good stuff, cheap price! I don't get it. Years ago that stuff would have been gone by noon on yard sale day!
But what I really hate is when they say (this has happened to me!) "will you take ...." and make a stupid low offer and aying that is all they have.. and I'd feel nice and sorry for them and let them have it and they'd give me a $20 bill to pay for it!!! Just this time.. I had a child's car seat..infant size to toddler. $25. Retailed for $65. I offered to drop it to $20 to this lady as she was looking at it and it was near the end of the day...so I said I'd drop the price to $20. She said great, she'll take it and went back to her car to get her money. She comes back and says.. "Will you take $14? That is all I have with me". I said yes as I wanted to get rid of the seat as I have had it for a few years and no kid.. so I was the nice guy and said, yeah, sure, $14 is fine. SHe hands me $14 dollars.
THEN she goes to her car and comes back with her son... and he wants some of these books we had and he choose a couple and she pays me for them with a $20!!!! I swear! I am nice enough to offer to come down on the price, then nice enough to take her even lower offer and find out she was just lieing and shafting me as she had the first price all along! I almost said something, but didn't.. what good would it have done and at least the stuff was gone. Had we had a better day, I wouldn't have taken the $14 but it wasn't that good so I just took what I could get so I didn't have to haul it back into the garage! Some people!

My kids would of gone nuts for the tween stuff you had. Sadly I've taken to looking on craigslist instead of wasteing my time stopping at every rummage I see unless it looks like they have kids stuff. My almost 10yr old can wear an XS or XXS in Jr's as a long tee so I look for Jr's stuff and many of those sales they also sell them for higher price but it's hit or miss on pricing no matter where you go.
I won't say my hubby isn't guilty of low balling for something. He bought a tee shirt that was still in a package for .25 I don't know what it was marked but he was proud of getting it for .25. As when he comes with us he usually goes and checks out the rummages and see's if the prices are what I'm looking for and if they have kids stuff so I hold the money he has whatever is in his pocket. Sometimes it's easier than buckling the kids in and out of the van.

I went to several yard sales and one that I went to they had a bedspread looked like it had holes in it and they wanted$5.00 for it I could not see paying that and also I went to a different one they had the matchbox cars they wanted $1.50 for each one sold seperately and I thought you go to them to get a bargin not to pay regular prices.

Exactly! People think things are worth more than they are! Yes they were truly out to get you in the examples you mentioned. Who'd pay that for a matchbox car you can find them for a dollar new usually.

Actually, if they are name brand jeans they would sell in my area for that much money. I wouldn't price them lower, if they are in excellent condition. I did laugh about the VHS Tapes, as they might sell for .50 unless this is for charity, as that is the only way I think your getting $1.50. I recently bought a VHS Tape for $1.50 at Friends of the Library, which is a not for profit group that supports our library.

Not here they wouldn't! People in my area are known for looking for deals and using tons of coupons. And you are right there's a difference between buying something a lil outdated for a chairity or community organization then someone who lives in a half million dollar house trying to make their mortgage payment from the looks of the prices.

Yes indeed fancy name = higher prices. However, I've seen store brands for say like k-mart marked at $2 a shirt now if it was NWT perhaps but otherwise no!

This is funny because the weekend in my town are our community sales so the husband are getting up early and are going to make a day of it but tonight we decided to hit up a few just within our block and we were able to go to three the first two were well priced but the last one was a bit crazy on here prices...the clothes she had was too small for my two but the jeans for the size were $4 then she had a play station 2 for $175 and cake pans for $4 we did end up buying a cordless phone with a double base for $8 because our just quit holding a charge and I am not wanting to spend $40 for a new one especially since I just bought these phones in March but while the main phone and base work the second one that I was hoping to put in our bedroom keeps saying it is searching and then sayin out of range I am not sure what the heck is wrong or how to fix it and I know that at sales you buy items as is I just wish she would of told us that only one phone worked...it is just upsetting knowing that not only did you spend a little much for it but then to spend that on
an item that didn't even work!

I'd be mad about that phone forsure! I see your logic too, but that's some nerve (but yet not a surprise) to sell something that doesn't work for $8, they should of sold it to you for $2-3 and a note that only one handset worked. I'd never spend $175 on a playstation w/o fully knowing it worked let alone the fact that it's probably an older model and I'd want a ton of games for that price. Plus I'd want to know if it was something if I got sick of it I could take it to GameStop and trade it in.
BTW good to see you posting again! :)

This older woman had some old records that where from the 1930's. They where in horrible condition like maybe they had been in a fire or something. She wanted $400 for 10 of them!
I mean I am not sure they would have been worth that in good condition!

If they were in excellent condition and perhaps with the luck in finding a collector of such things and willing to pay. Like you, if it looks like bunk and you are not familiar with the prices they go for on say e-bay ect then they are sol and probably have been watching too much antiques road show!

My last yard sale I gave every thing away for free. These are things I dont need or want in my home anymore. Im not a thrift store. I dont need to pay for a building or pay employees. I like to get deals, that is why I go to yard sales. If I am seeing high prices I just leave. I think it should be a chance to benefit everyone. I will pay you some money but give me a great price.

i find that there are two types of sales. one, where the owner wants to make money on their stuff and two, where the owner just wants to get rid of stuff so they mark stuff down very cheap.
the clothes don't sound too bad if they are in impeccable shape and brand name but personally, i sold all my clothes for a dollar or less and had a lot of people buy stuff.
as for the vhs, that lady sounds like my mom. she did that too at her sale and then gave them to me for my sale (as they obviously didn't sell) i just quietly donated them to the local thrift store. shhhh don't tell her!

For the clothes, if they were all name brand and in good condition, I'd say those were good prices. Last summer I paid $10 per pair of name brand jeans for the oldest, and $5 per name brand shirt, all were Hollister, Aero, American Eagle.. so it was worth it. Plus if you get a whole ton of stuff they usually cut you a better deal. Then again, I've also been to sales where I've gotten Addidas shirts for the oldest for 50 cents.
We stopped at one about a week ago. I saw they had 2 of those turtle sandbox thingies. We pulled over to see how much they wanted for them because my younger boys would LOVE a sandbox. They said $15 a piece. One of them, the eyes of the turtle had been ripped off it. Last I knew, now I haven't bought one in a long time, but I paid $25 for one of those brand new when my oldest was about 5 or 6, so I'm not thinking I'm going to pay $15 for a used one.
When we drove back later they were both gone so either they dropped the prices or someone was silly enough to pay that price.

How you feel about the sandbox is how I feel about the clothes. You mentioned paying $5 for an Areo shirt, we were there the other week for kicks to browse and you know they had shirts on clearance for $6, dresses for $8 so it's not like it's a deal to pay what you are willing to pay for used when new is almost what they are asking for.

When my children were younger we spent many weekends and garage and rummage sales. Once we went to a sale where there was a lot of childrens clothing. the people running the sale were either completely out of their minds or badly in need of money. maybe it could have been a little of both. There was a little girls outfit that had to cost 20.oo in a store like walmart. they were asking full price for it. it was this way with many of the items. needless to say we moved on.1 person likes this

I agree time to move on. It's hard enough sometimes to spot the rummages with kids stuff then to find that it's a mint is another. My kids often give me this look of "we're leaving already?"... there's no point in looking for a needle in the haystack sort of deal when everything else is more than one wanted to pay.
You could of easily found a dress in a thrift store or another rummage for a fraction of that!
