Freaking FEMA Government (&^*&%!

We where in a natural disaster 10 months ago. It was A federally declared disaster and we have been working with FEMA on a buy out of our damaged home. For months we have had dead lines with fees and penalties if not done correctly or in a timely fashion. Now how a buy out works is there are two rounds those who meet the requirements 100% are in the first round. Those who meet between 50-99% of the requirements are in the second. A certain amount of money is given per town. It is distributed to first round peoples first then if there is anything left over they disperse to second round. Well after no longer hearing anything about the sales I called to check on our paper work. They bumped us back to the second round. I asked why they said the appraisal on the house pre flood was higher then expected and knocked us down. Oh ok I think then I sit and think more. I call the inspector and ask how the amounts are figured out. He tells me and I ask him what happens if the appraisal comes back for more then what he had ask the going price when he did our paperwork. He tells me that they send it to him to be re worked so that the proper numbers are in the paperwork it would make no difference to if we get or not. So I call FEMA/PEMA and ask why I am off first round. They go over it and I ask why the two sets of numbers are mixed together not re worked properly. The woman looks into it and tells me oh there was a snafu sorry about that. We'll re work it but it is too late for you to be back on round one. I am so angry. Because of their mistake I have been bumped down to a second round that if there is money left over we will not have answers about until after Christmas because of their mistakes! They messed up and we will suffer becasue of it. If we had messed up there would be fines and penalties out the a$$ but because they did it's "oh well sorry" I am not one to cry about things being unfair but I am just so upset over this. I contacted my township who is filing an appeal for us (I have a lawyer on this too) but I just think we are screwed. I just want to get out from under this house and move some where we will be safe. This was the first major flood like this in the area but it is becasue of two other towns up river who put in flood walls and levees to save them selves. It is no longer a rare possibility of us flooding again like this. The town down river from us is building flood deterrents as well and by messing with the river it has been proven by engineers that our little town will now flood every time we have over 3-4 in. of rain at any given time during a normal year. Sow e went from a hasn't happened in over 4o years possibility to a it will happen. Not what we signed on for when we bought the house 13 years ago.

What a horrible thing to have happen. I certainly hope you can get out from under that situation toot sweet. Ugh! Everytime it rains worth a twig in He99 it will flood again. So you will never feel safe. Good you have a lawyer on it and an appeal in the works. You are lucky not to have to pay fees and fines but they should fess up to their mistakes and flip you to the first phase. I wish you luck.

Thank you. It has been hardest on my seven year old which kills me. Every time it rains she starts packing just in case and that is the stuff she will leave out of card board boxes as she feels better knowing everything is already packed. The counselor keeps telling me as she sees it isn't flooding she will begin to relax but so far it just isn't happening.

Thank you and we are hoping things work in our favor before another disaster happens. So far it has been a dry summer so knock on wood we should be ok for now.

You're dealing with the federal government. Surely you didn't expect things to go well or in your favor.

In the beginning during the disaster they where great but this buy out has been one battle after the other. They at one time tried to tell us the house we lived in wasn't even flooded after they had an inspector at our home and granted us money to fix it! The battle is wearing though ya know?

I have friends who went through Katrina and lost every thing. FEMA sold them a trailer that has made each of them sick with some sort of respiratory ailment, but FEMA refuses to give them the money in place of it so they could buy a home. $10,000 would make a nice down payment. Her husband is on disability and she works as a RN. They are renting a house now. But there sits the tailor with no one using it in their driveway. The Federal Government can't seem to do ANYTHING right, and I am in complete sympathy with you. IF you had made a mistake in THEIR paperwork, say for IRS, you'd be fined and possibly jailed. It is very frustrating.

It is and I am not one to cry or pout but I have to say after everything else and getting my hopes up about being able to get out of here it just was such a punch to the stomach and I needed to vent. I am just trying to tie a knot in the end of the rope to hold on to so to say..
