Cleaning the Shower Curtain

I love doing housework and having my house clean at all times. However, there is one thing that I really can't stand cleaning and that is the shower curtain. Does anyone know an easy way to clean it. I sprinkle ajax all over it and then scrub with a brush. Its just so hard scrubbing the mildrew off everyweek. So what is the one thing you hate cleaning and I welcome any easier ways to clean the shower curtain or keep it clean for a longer period of time. Thank you in advance!

I only clean my shower curtain 2-4 times a year and I do that by washing it in my washing machine, on the delicate cycle, and I use both laundry soap and bleach. (If your fabric curtain is not light color, I wouldn't use the bleach, but I would for the plastic part for getting rid of the mold that starts to build up). Then I just hang it back up to air dry and it is clean as brand new..

Nope, that is because the bleach, (I noticed someone mentioning about bleach and the toxic effects it has, that is true, so I don't use it often), and it not only removes the mildew, but keeps it from coming back for a while.

Only 2 to 4 times. Doesn't it get black and mildrewing in between? I have to clean my curtain at least every two weeks. Though I try to do it every week.

Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar. Spray down the shower curtain with it every few days. That should take care of the problem in a safe and effective way. White vinegar and baking soda really are the only two household cleaners that one needs. All of those harsh chemical cleaners really do nothing other than make one's home toxic.

Thank you so much I will definitely try it. It is even cheaper then all of those toxin type chemcial cleaners.

Hey there , wilsongoddard , what effect does the vinegar have ? In my country , the tap water leave some calcium after drying many times. You can see it inside the electric kettle (it's a device you fill with water and plug it in , it makes the water boil after 1-2 minutes). What effect does the baking soda have ? can it melt fat dirt ? (if you make meat at the toaster , you get a lot of fat you need to clean , if you make barbecue , the net has a lot of fat from the meat.)

I know people think I'm crazy to like to clean but I feel like I'm killing two birds with one stone. While cleaning the house you are exercising in a sense and your house is getting cleaned. I would love to clean your house if I lived near you.

lELIN, WHEN I HAD A SHOWER CURTAIN I WOULD PUT IT IN THE WASHER ON DELICATE, A LITTLE BLEACH & DETERGENT. Worked pretty good for me.

Thanks I'm going to try the vinegar and baking soda first, because I hate taking the shower curtain off and back on.

I put my shower curtain through a 40 degree wash in the machine. Then either tumble dry it or iron it to make it water proof.Put normal washing powder in.It will shift all that built up mildew and water scale.

I have a plastic liner inside which is the one that gets mildrew within 2 weeks of cleaning. The material one is on the outside which I don't have a problem with. Thanks!

I clean mine whenever I see that there is soap scum starting to build on it and it just throw them in the washer to be washed with the rest of the laundry and then I either hang out on the line or I will just hang it back up in the shower to dry. Now when I clean the tub part of the shower I just use scrubbing bubbles on it let it sit for a little while and then just wipe it clean with a damp rag.I have found for me that this is the easiest way to clean the shower

What we have tended to use on our Carpets, floors, and in the bathroom like on the tub, shower curtain, sink etc. is Lemon scented ammonia diluted with some water. It helps give a cleaner scent and look to everything without having the ammonia smell. This is something that was actually recommended to me by a neighbor I used to have, and it really does work.

If you leave the shower curtain open and not pushed back all folded up...all the water will run off and there won't be any mildew. I know this as my husband always left his pushed back when he got out and there was always white stuff and mildew on the bottom 12 inches up. I told him when he gets out..pull the curtain back open (like it would be if you were showering) and let the water run off and that would stop. He of course, said I was nuts, but I did that one mine, and mine NEVER had that white stuff on it. But to clean it every now and then... I sprayed Simple Green on it about half way up and let it all drip down then use the shower head to spray it off after a while. Sometimes I'd spray it about 15 minutes before I shower, then when I get in...spray the curtain off and then finish my shower. Worked like a charm But they have that spray stuff that you spray on the shower doors...maybe try that. I use that on my shower doors now...and it seems to do fine. Maybe it'd work on the curtain too!

My shower curtain is always in the position as if we were taking a shower. I have tried scrubbing bubbles but that didn't seem to work so good. I have a feeling that the mildrew develops faster because I live in a warm climate year round.

If the shower curtain is placed in such way as if you were taking a shower, mildew should not set it so easily. Get one of those bottles with sprinklers and mix chlorine with water. Sprinkle the curtain every day a half an hour before cleaning the shower. You only need a little chlorine. Then just take it away showering it with some cold water. When too much mildrew settles in, I discovered that the inside plastic curtain is very inexpensive. I use two curtains. The one that is inside id the one with problems and I spend more money cleaning it if it´s really dirty than buying another one.

Yes, they are very inexpensive but such a pain to take on and off.

Okay, first of I must say that I don't get the cloth curtains for my shower. There is only a plastic one and I never clean it. When it gets to the point where it's noticeably dirty, I throw it out and buy a new one. They're pretty inexpensive and too big a pain to deal with cleaning them. Especially if I decide to go with a Dollar Store one.

I have both the plastic liner on the inside and the material one on the outside. The plastic one is the one that I have a problem with. I would have to be buying a new one every two weeks.

Well its two of us taking only showers and right now at this time of year we can end up taking 2 to 3 showers in a day. We live in a warm climate year round and I'm beginning to think that is the problem.

OMG! That's a lot of use! But then, I'm a bath person and have my shower on a hose that I use to wash my hair with so I never really use the shower curtain. Good luck!

Yeah get a new one. We run ours though the washer with a load of towels from time to time but if they get to grimy we just buy a new one. Of course getting a fabric shower curtain would be the best option if you are looking to replace that way you can clean it then hang it when it is done.

I just make use of the washing machine to get the dirt away from the curtain. I feel cleaning is a hard task and i just make use of all the ways to make the cleaning activities quite simple.
