Let's wear body parts!

I like unusual things. Don't you? My family thinks I like all things weird or odd. In the past that has come back to bite me. Once my dad and sister came home with a shirt they thought I would absolutely love because they thought it was strange. It wasn't strange - it was 'do a double take ugly'. Bless their hearts, I wore it. Years later they found out how much I hated it and thought it was funny.
So when I saw a necklace on the show Oddities (on The Science Channel), I thought it looked normal. It wasn't my style, but I thought it looked average. The rather large looking rocks were smooth, but different colored. One had a goldish shine to it. The woman selling it said her friend, a nurse, made it. So what were the stones? Kidney stones! A lot of time kidney stones are so small you pass them without knowing it. Or they can be extremely painful. Some have to be removed surgically. Which is how the nurse got the five kidney stones she made the necklace out of - from her patients. She made them into a necklace. And the shop owner bought it - for a hundred dollars.
Now I'm a lover of the unusual or weird, but I ain't wearing or buying a piece of jewelry made out of things that used to be in the human body. What say you?

I haven't seen the one with the two women before. I have only seen the one with Mike and Evan. I'll have to look for the two women. I watched one once that sparked a discussion here I had about "hair art."..lol. Have you seen that episode?

No..it was a woman that was looking for a centerpiece picture or decor for her house. There was this huge picture and at first glance it looked painted but it was done out of hair from a certain family. It was the Victorian era though. I guess it was a way of keeping up with their lineage back then. Apparently somewhere on the works of art is a list of names. When I researched it they did have jewelry and stuff made out of hair too. This one thing they did was a wreath made out of hair too.
I'll watch for it tonight...lol.

Like you, if I saw it and I liked it, who knows? I like to wear unusual items, not ugly ones. I think that a lot of the show Oddities is recreated from previous customers' items-whose to say that the necklace even sold to another customer? If she was selling them to other people, then why did she have to come to have to come to Obscura (the actual store the show is based on) to sell it?

The rarer an item is, the more money it commands. And to find a 90-year-old shoe for a club-footed person is quite unusual. But it IS New York City and there are some strange birds there.

Most of what Obscura sells is antiques. They once sold a shoe that was about 90 years old for 450 dollars. It was one shoe, that was unusual because it was made for a club footed person. Four hundred and fifty dollars. What a waste. But if it makes them happy...

I imagine they knew. There is not one normal thing in that store. If a piece of jewelry is being sold, they're going to wonder what makes it worth what they are paying. They sold human hands, human ears, blood letting kits from last century, baby coffins...yes, I said baby coffins.

Hi Amber! How's my favorite lil' sis? I definitely am a fan of
unusual jewelery too, but this goes a bit too far, even for me!
I don't think that I would wear any body parts as jewelery either.
It seems a bit tacky and far-fetched even for me? I remember when
I was 13 and had my tonsils out and asked the doc if I could have
my tonsils back in a jar and was very upset that he didn't give
them to me! But, I had no plans on making them into a necklace
or anything. I had 2 colon polyps taken out almost a year ago.
I didn't get those either. Maybe the next time I have something
else taken out I'll see if it is worthy of jewelery making and
I can sell it on Ebay????I guess I could use the extra money?

So good to see you! I would have thought about ebay too, but odds are they wouldn't let you sell it. There was a pitcher in the major leaugues who had two bones chips removed from his elbow. He tried to sell them on ebay for charity, but ebay took it off telling him they considered it a body part and they don't sell body parts on ebay.

A necklace from kidney stone??
She really know how to make it something weird into money!
I could not imagine and never expected there will be someone who will bought it from her. I think she never expect that too~(^^)
If she ever give it free to me, I won't wear it..(^^)

Eeeew that is so totally gross. I thought you were going to say they were teeth, which would also be gross. Of course we wear ivory, and pearls, which in a way are versions of the same things, teeth and stones, but somehow it just is not the same.

They did have a necklace made of teeth. But it was from an old cannibal tribe, so it was an antique. I think it was originally from the Fiji Islands. You know who bought it? The woman who plays Elvira. (I remember her from when I was little, I don't think I've seen her around lately.)

EW!!
I don't like odd, strange, or unusual. I like simple things that aren't flashy and don't attract attention. I wear basic colors because I don't want to stand out. I wear small jewelry because the big stuff may look tacky or gaudy on me. I might go with some interesting colors for jewelry or nail polish.. I especially love the stuff that looks like it changes colors depending on the light.. but that's probably the most outside the box I'll go.

That is weird i don't think that I would wear a piece of jewelery made from somebody else's kidney stones.Though if i had to have a stone removed i may keep my own as a souvenir and i suppose i may consider that being put on a piece of jewelery otherwise i would keep it in a pot.Though if i used it for jewelery i would give it a good wash. I have heard of medical professionals keeping souvenirs though its usually more interesting things like bullets they have removed,or some of the more strange things they have removed from a patient.

Um yeah...I don't think I could wear that one either. I like things that are different or unique but I don't know that is taking it a little far, I do t think if i bought and and wore it that i could stop thinking about where and who it came from and what other body parts it may of touched.

Woah! That's something interesting! I would be amazed at it because it's so interesting but I wouldn't want to wear it out because it used to be in a human body! Do you mind taking a photo of it so that we can have a look? Never seen one before and from what you describe, it seems to be beautiful.

I don't have it. I saw it on a TV show. So I can't give you a photo. It was basically a long, thick, black string, and there would be a kideny stone followed by a silver little bead, followed by a kidney stone, followed by a little silver bead. In total there were five kidney stones and five silver beads.

Ewww, that sounds too creepy, lol! I like strange and unusual items too, but I don't go that far.
I remember once on Ebay there was a dealer selling jewelry made out of reindeer droppings. I mean, come on, really, seriously. Who would want to wear that around their neck or have a pair of earrings of deer crap hanging around their face?..ugh! AND the stuff was selling too.
Next thing you know, it'll be a necklace made out of toes with the toenails all painted up. The future is getting scary, haha.

aye aye! I second that motion.. and raise a "oh hell naw!" lol. I would not, no matter how shiny and pretty they are. I don't think I'd even want to touch the things to work with them, no matter what.

I am also weird, referring to my taste of things. That kidney stone is nice, it is a good thing he or she had the access to obtain the said kidney stones. I mean the sanitary issue from the hospital. I wondered, how did he / she sneak out the stones?
