What Kind of Birthday Cake Should I Get?

My birthday is on Thursday and I was confused on what kind of cake to get. I am not really keen on getting another strawberry shortcake although I do love them. Any suggestions for a middle aged 49 year old? Do you ever make birthday cakes? I'm not making anything like that this week as it's too hot and will make the house too warm.

Frozen cake is a winner in my book. Or the boston filled cakes at Albertson's. That is what I always used to get from co-workers when I was still at work. I always put into a Birthday Fund and that is what they would get. If its too hot to cook then get a frozen one or pick one out at your favorite store.

Boston creme filled cakes I'm assuming you mean? They are yummy! I'm not a chocolate fan all the time, but I love those cakes. I think a frozen cake sounds good too. I like the idea of the birthday fund at work, that way you all share into it and buy what you like.

Those are yummy, the chocolate and the creme together is delicious. I have cut back alot on chocolate again though ti seems. If I eat it once then I can't stop for a few days.

Thank you arpazia, how thoughtful of you! An ice cream cake sounds great! In fact I have not had that in a long time and being this is summer it is a great suggestion. I would buy one from the supermarket without a problem.

I got a smaller strawberry shortcake again, it was so much smaller but the plastic case was the same size so you could tell it got smaller. The price was still the same though, that figures.

I love to bake, probably a bit too much :) If I had my choice of cake I would either do a strawberry cake (made from real strawberries - not the ones filled with dye & chemicals) or tiramasu or carrot cake

Well, I'm not the one who will be baking it but those sound like awesome suggestions. I know what you mean about the chemicals and dyes from the strawberries not organic. My family keeps buying them but they don't eat them and I end up eating them cause I don't want them to go bad. i will just tell them I'll eat my own strawberries that I grow here or the organic ones if I make anything with them in it. I could make a strawberry shortcake, it's very simple, and probably much cheaper than buying one these days. If it were not this hot outside I would do it. Tiramasu and carrot cake sound yummy too. Thanks for the suggestions!

My birthday was the 17th and because I can't have gluten, I always have to think of what to do for my birthday celebration. This year is the first year I've found that Betty Crocker has now put out a cake mix that is gluten free. But I didn't find it until this week. So, instead, I treated myself to a Blizzard at Dairy Queen. And by the way, they make awesome ice cream cakes for those who can have regular cake. It has only been the last five years that I cannot have wheat in my diet, but I'm still learning alternatives to what I used to eat regularly. Thanks for the discussion.

Happy belated birthday to you! Gluten is very bad for some people, I know at least one person who has to avoid it otherwise they get really sick and ill. Thank goodness there are some companies that are aware of this now and are making some products available for people with gluten issues. I have also seen some recipes on the Internet for some gluten free goodies as well. A DairyQueen Blizzard sounds excellant too, it's been years since I had one of them.

I've never made a birthday cake. I am good at cooking, but I usually don't do a lot of baking. I think that chocolate cake with white icing sounds good. Or, maybe, a chocolate cake with chocolate icing--maybe topped with whipped cream. Or, you could go light and do a chocolate angel food cake with whipped cream and either fresh strawberries or cherries. Okay, now I want cake...

I've made them for friends and family members, before in the past and somewhat present (as in this year), but can't do it this week. The weather is way too warm. Choc cake with white icing is yummy, and choc and choc does too. So many choices, huh. I'm not too sure about the angel food cake though, it's good but not that good, to me anyways. I had some cherries today with pits, I love them. Of course I didn't eat the pits though, LOL. Thanks for suggesting some cakes to have.

cake replacement - best cake replacement ever for a BD party.
I say that depends for who you intend to have that cake: For you own taste and enjoy or for pople you will invite to celebrate with you ... If is for you, go for whatever you like the most and care not about others will like or nt. If is for others (or mostly for others), then I say this (attached picture) is the best of best cake replacement ever, specially that next year you'll change from forty-something to fifty-something ... pay attention, you must have plenty of those or else people will not be happy

LOL, I like your idea of cake replacement. It is one of the best sought after treats for adults imagineable and i feel like I could sure use them at times, lately. I don't drink however, I feel like if I started I would never stop. I don't want to get in that kind of addiction as I know my family member struggled with it for years.
