Celebrating a First Anniversary

United States

Yesterday was our first wedding anniversary. We didn't have a lot of money to spend, so we dined at home. Sirloin tips, fresh green beans, and fried red potatoes were on the menu with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream for dessert. What is important is not having money to spend, but spending time together. Being with each other is a celebration in itself. Do simple things mean more to you than going all out? They do to me.

It seems we never have any money at the time of any special event, so we have to keep it simple. No problem. I have seen more places and done more things in the last almost fifteen years than in the forty plus years before that. Sometimes a lunch date has been meeting at the park and feeding the geese and swans while dining on the Tuesday special chili dogs. Money does not make an occasion and really cannot make up for someone not being there in spirit. Better to save the money and relish each others' presence.

Wish we could actually save the money! It seems just when we have our heads above water, a wave crashes over us. Good thing we can tread water!

I am right there beside you, and just like the duck, you would never guess how fast my feet are paddling.

Sounds like a great celebration to me! If you could only afford hamburgers and water to drink, being together is what makes the day special. I enjoy simple things more than elaborate ones. Going all out for a celebration seems to focus more on the celebration than the reason for it.

You are so right. We had a cookout the weekend before our anniversary and spent more time with other people.

I think I covered this already - but when my friend and I were younger and she was healthier, we'd like to go out - lately we just enjoy each other's company and maybe share a movie on DVD together...

Yes...spending time with family is the most important thing....even when I am busy if someone in my family needs me or wants to get together then I drop what I am doing....simple things like sharing a great meal....sitting down and talking things over....that is what life is all about.

I think it sounds like a delicious meal on the menu, I bet you two will remember this more clearly than you would going out to eat somewhere. I think there is room for more little "moments" when celebrating on a more personal level like you two did, hope you had a nice time! Happy 1st Anniversary also.

I never go out. I can't remember the last time I have gone out! I rather just stay home and be by myself! I have tried to go out with friends but I always lose paitence! Not my strong suite! I don't go out on my own. I never have liked to do it and never will. I am a homebody!

Congrats to your first anniversary. It is really the thought that counts. As long as you are with your love one on that day is more important than anything else material. It seems that you enjoyed each others company which is more important, Stay happy and love love love.

To be honest, if it were me even if I had money I'd opt to stay at home. I don't know if I'm just weird but I know that I would want to be alone with my partner on our wedding anniversary--no other people but us. It would be a great quality time to spend with no one to disturb us and we can enjoy it without worrying about anyone. I actually don't go out on Valentine's Day either...too many people are going out on that day, I can't enjoy a nice quiet time with my date! LOL
