The Kids being my niece and nephew. They come over quite a bit when there parents are working. Today I made them some play doh to toy with. We don't have any food coloring but it was still fun to play with. Easy to make as well and I got the recipe online. I let them both help in the process, giving the older one the stirring on the stove job as he is old enough to tend to it. The little one had the choice of either holding the measuring cup for me or pouring it in herself. She held the measuring cup.
They spent maybe an hour playing with it. I saved in the fridge and the recipe is on the dry erase board. I took a picture but haven't uploaded it to my facebook yet so no picture for here.

I thought you lived with your niece and nephew (my mistake). I remember making play doh as a kid, and being able to eat the ones we made (except it was rather salty). It's a fun experience, and they will remember it when they are older especially if their parents work a lot they remember the little details. I know a lady I use to work with children always worked, and the grandchild was over at her place more than the parents house. Now that he;s older he remmeber what his grandparents did for him not his parents.

Their parents still spend a fair amount of time with them but they work a lot too. This play doh isn't really all the edible. I try to get them involved in activities but sometimes they get a bit rowdy and it's hard to. Plus I don't have a whole bunch of stuff for them to do. I'm trying to keep thing straightened and such, give more room.
I don't live with them, I stayed with them for a week last summer. Maybe I mentioned it here, I don't remember.

Maybe, you mentioned that visit, and I just assumed you lived with them.
It;s good your helping them out, and keeping them busy. Kids now a days even at young ages get in trouble that way. I guess you have to have the balance between work life, and home life. But this lady I worked with I felt so bad for she always had her grandchild, and even when the kids were home they seem not to want the child around.

I'm trying to find activities for them to do without the t.v. and games, that's what they want to turn to. When their parents are home they do crafts and such (the girl and my sister) and tae kwon do (the kids and my sister)..
I think my brother in law does yard work and such like that, sledding when it's winter...

I have used packets of Koolaid to give color and a nice fruity scent to the playdoh and the kids loved it!

I just use those little liquid ones from the grocery store...4 colors to a pack. Forget how much they are but not much (or I wouldnt' buy them!) But those work very well and they don't discolor the hands when the clay is kneaded alot!

GG gave me that suggestion and I hadn't even thought of it. I will have to pick up a few packets tonight if I can think to before I leave work. I've been wanting to play with it more then the kids as it acts like a stress reliever for me.

liquid kool aid you mean? hmm.. I'll look into it not sure i've seen liquid kool aid. I have seen little liquid pouches of gatorade, but those are expensive.

You can add unsweetened Koolaid powder for fragrance and color and it helps preserve it because of the citric acid. Play doh is such an easy thing to do and is so much cheaper when made at home.

I never thought of kool aid! We don't have any right now anyway, but that's cheap and can be used double! We don't use food coloring over here anymore...
It's sitting in the fridge now, I'll make another batch sometime and have it different colors for when they come again, they'll love it!

Didn't you have the best time doing that with them? I found a recipe for the dough on line and with a pinch of oil in it...you can just make it and then store it in plastic containers for a lONG time..that way next time they come over...they can play with it again. I did that for my grand kids... and had it at my house and they loved. it
For birthday for one of them I made 6 different colors and put it in the plastic container and added cookie cutters and little cutter tools and things and she loved that gift and I was told she played with it all the time. The more you use it, the longer it lasts.

It sounds like you may have used the same recipe I did. Mine called for oil. It was cream of tarter, oil, flour, and water. I made two batches. One I didn't wait to cool all the way and just globbed it with the other and put it in the fridge. It's in alumnium foil. It's a big ball now.
I use it for stress relief as it's fun to mash into a patty then make into a ball again.
I may have to make that for the little one for Christmas.
A friend of mine showed me a recipe for ooglunk (I don't think I spelled that right). It's on instructables.com and is just cornstarch and water, made to the right consistency. It's a solid and a liquid at the same time.
