Are college students and employees waterproof?

Philippines

It was raining so hard this early morning due to typhoon. On our way going to our work, I asked my wife why the education department suspend only pre-schools up to high school level when there is already typhoon signal #2 in a particular area. College students are only suspended during signal #3 while employees are not considered in the exceptions. She answered, perhaps the government consider us as waterproof individual that are not affected by the bad weather. I think, the government should already ammend the rules in giving suspension of classes and include offices during bad weather. What do you think of this fellow mylotters?

If its just the typhoon and the rain we have to worry about, I guess college students and adults can manage to pull it through. But, if there's flood that comes with it, this should be given consideration and just cancel all classes at all levels, since its just impossible for the students to get to their classrooms in good shape.

It is true. I think some of the school officials are already giving announcement if their school is affected by the flood, all levels are cancelled. How about for the employees?

Yes, but the risk of going to face the storm is really need to consider. I think there are still employers that haave a good consideration. Sometimes, employers will reason out that they are in the office so employees must be there too, not thinking that some employees will travel just to get to the office.

As for employees, it's a tougher decision to make, since there's a bigger entity that will be affected, more than just cancelling classes. If employees won't be able to work, then the regular operations of the companies will be disrupted resulting to a lot of losses or troubles. There has to be a really good reason to suspend work. Also, for cases like that, its not just the business owners who would suffer from losses, but the employees themselves, too. They won't be paid for those days they're out due to weather problems. So, some employees would really force their way to their workplace so they earn and bring food to their family.

Right, just this morning as I leave the house, the weather is quite fine, low rain pours but as I reach to another destination, the rain suddenly pour hard with wind, I need to walk on the pedestrian lane before the cars and I can't run if I am holding my umbrella while winds strike it so what I do is I close my umbrella, bring on my hood and then run hard. I feel a bit sick since yesterday but I still go to office. In other office or work, there are some good bosses who has the initiative to suspend working hours or cut the working hours, in my case, my boss is very far in making this initiative, even I guess if we suggested it. He only thinks of his office shouldn't be vacated as there are clients who will call and ask for something. They also need to protect their employers right?

You are right there, employers should also consider these things because no one will work for them if they all got sick because of the bad weather.

In our case, as early as 530am I havae already knew that there are suspension of government offices and classes in some areas of luzon. I asked the HRD if there will be suspension of work since we are in the private company. We just wait for the answer. According to our main office, if we cannot go to work, we may opt not to go. We are also excuse, however, they are not sure if that will be deducted from the salary or not. This only means that if we did not go to work we are absent. We then proceed to our office an hour late but go home before lunch and I told our HRD that the road going to our home might get flooded if the rain continue to pour. Good that the goverment issued a memo late in the morning that private institutions are also excused from work due to bad weather.

Sadly my employer is far from realizing this, yesterday, I am all alone, the 3 other staff can't report for work. One of my prize officemate can't make it due to flood at his area, and I've told my boss about it and he said, " I told you, it's automatic", meaning when it rain hard, he will not come to work. I've seen the place near to him and it's truly flooded so how can he come to work with his car. A little consideration is what I'm searching for him, but he's no that bad, just need a little real care about his employees. I went home at 10:30, I told him there is a typhoon and I need to get home before flood come to our area.

I guess people assume that college graduates and workers have a better body immune system compared to kids. But it does make them invisible or waterproof. It is just a kind of levelling. Many college students and workers are likely to get sick because they went out in a storm. I get the feeling that this question was asked before.

Yes it does not necessarily means that as you level up, you are more immune to sickness. So I think,, offices should also considered when there are storm signals.

Maybe you are right that even there are storm outside, you really need to go to work but maybe if you are in doubt of going to work, you may opt not to continue but I just hope that employers are willing to accept your excuses.

For workers, it’s part of the contract - rain or shine, you have to show up for work because there are things to do. College students cannot be given lax standards because they are already considered adults and therefore responsible for many things in their life. However, responsibility does have a health effect– whether there is a raging storm outside or not. Adult people feel (or made to feel) that they are neglecting their responsibilities because there is a storm outside.

I like your saying very much, imagining office workers can be waterproof, but actually this is the regulation of the whole world, heavy raining cause the school suspension but not for the workers, except for the very severe typhoon,so pls easy my friend,so we can be flexible such as if it rain so hard we can wait for a little longer even we will late for work,I think all the supervisor can understand that.

Yes, workers or emploees too will suffer in passing those flooded areas, they might get stranded on their way. Furthermore, there are still their families that are worried and waiting for them to reach home.

I think you got point, i remember when i was still in college there was a typhoon and our province was declared signal 2 and the local government suspended the classes due to flooding on the road. i think its up to the local governments decision to suspend classes when there is a typhoon. when it comes to employees the boss's will act to this matters.

There are some boss that are considerate but there are also not. Some will consider that you came from a place very much affected by flood and you will not be able to go to office. However there are also some that will not consider this as excuse for not going to the office.

College students and employess should not be excluded when it regards to suspension of classes. Being college students is not an excuse for them to be exposed on harsh weathers like typhoons and flooding. Employees they're also human who needs protection. They're just a year older from 4th year high school students. So what's the difference. As college students, they could also catch colds and other sickness during this rainy season just like anybody.

That is exactly my point, what is the difference between them and us? We are all human and can get sick in case of bad weather. furthermore, the risk of being caught in an accident because of the strong winds.

Yes. The government must also consider working people like us. They will always say that they will leave it to the companies but some companies don't mind their people anyway. The heads don't care because they have their own cars and can leave the office any time they want.

You are right, sometimes the heads or even the officers in charge does not care because they live near their workplace unlike others that will really travel and will pass some danger zones.
