Habits that do more harm than good

We want to be healthy and clean. That's why do something extra to make sure that germs don't get into our body. But there are some habits that can do more harm than good. 1. Using too much hand sanitizer. When possible, opt for soap and water instead. The DFA in the United States has already confirmed that triclosan, an antibacterial found in most soaps and hand sanitizers, doesn't make your hands any "cleaner" compared to using regular soap and water. It may even make you skin dry. 2. Brushing after every meal. Try to wait at least half an hour before picking up your toothbrush. Studies have shown that brushing your teeth within 20min of having a meal could damage your teeth. That's because acids in food soften your tooth's enamel, making it vulnerable. 3. Over-washing your hair. Washing your hair everyday can strip it of natural oils that help keep your tresses conditioned. Without these oils, your hair becomes more prone to breakage.

Oh, it sounds dangerous, is that true? I know over-washing hair is not good ,but I don't know using too much hand sanitizer and brushing after every meal are bad too.

Brushing after every meal is not actually bad for you but it just won't do any good. Over-using hand sanitiser is difficult. You shouldn't use it all the time but there are times when it is appropriate.

Hello :). This might sound kind of gross, but I have discovered that usually you can't have health and cleanness at the same time. Before I moved by myself I was usually always sick, either a cold, asthma or allergies, so I always was cleaning my room and stuff. After I moved by myself I let everything get dirty. Dust everywhere, there are ants living on the walls and on the weekends I don't even shower. But now I don't get sick, at all. I don't even sneeze, no more allergies, nothing. I've even been between a lot of sick people and I don't get sick. Once everyone in the office caught the flu, there was snot everywhere, people coughing over me and there were some that even fell in bed for some days. But I didn't even felt tired or ill. After a week of that, I discovered I am now unsickable (:p). So maybe people should clean less and let the germs come to them to be healthy. Ever since that I don't even clean until I can see my footprints on the floor :p. Funnily, I don't even wash my teeth that much (I use mouthwash for the breath though) and I don't even have cavities. Maybe everything they teach as proper hygiene is a lie :).

I think a lot that they teach about hygiene is to make money. (So we will buy more soap, more toothpaste, more deodorant, more shampoo)

I think we can go too far with cleanliness but then there are people who decide that's bad for us and end up going the other way. Being clean and hygienic is important. I do agree with the things you have said. Well, it's been common knowledge about washing hair and brushing teeth for years. If you brush your teeth straight after eating, you're just cleaning the food deposits and not your teeth. Although flossing after eating is a good idea. Hair needs certain oils, etc. which are washed out when using shampoo or washing too often. As for hand sanitiser, the suggestion is that, if your hands LOOK dirty and have physical dirt on them, use soap and water. If you need to wash your hands when they are not physically dirty, then sanitiser is better (except when going to the bathroom. Then you should wash your hands in soap and water anyway because anyone who doesn't do that is disgusting!).

To add something, it is a big relief for people to sit longer after each heavy meal. Though it fells more relaxing sitting after each heavy meal, it may actually brings you to health problems. First, the food in the stomach will be squeeze, thus making it harder for the stomach juices to mix with the food and prolonging its digestion.

Another thing we do is wash ourselves too often! We wash off natural oils and try to replace them with lotions and oils of other animals. Skin problems are quite common and I wonder how much of it is due to over scrubbing with soap?

Very true. I don't use hand sanitizer at all because it kills the good germs we need to fight the bad germs. Another thing we use too much of is antibiotics. They should ONLY be used when a person has a bacterial infection and no other time. That is actually pretty rare because most illnesses are viruses. These don't respond to antibiotics. Using the antibiotics destroys the immune system, making us more susceptible to other illnesses. We also build up a tolerance to the antibiotic, rendering them useless when we actually need them. We NEED exposure to illnesses to help build up our immune system so it can handle what we come in contact with. Hiding from germs does more harm than good, as you stated. Another myth is fluoride. I won't post on that here, but you can research how harmful it is.
