How many hours of sleep should a 16 year old get each day?

August 3, 2012 7:23am CST
I was wondering this because usually i go to sleep at 1:00am - 2:00am each morning and usually wake up at 10:00am - 11:00am. Is this enough sleep? Should i be getting more sleep? I need to know because i heard that if you dont get anough sleep then you dont grow and i am quite a small lad. Please answer this because i am only 5"6 and i was wondering if it was because i do not get enough sleep. Thank you in advance :)

Every person is different with how much there body needs. So it's really hard to say. Because if you sleep to little your going to be tired and exhausted but if you over sleep you can feel the same way as well. Normally a teen till they are in there 20's need more sleep then a baby does so it's about any where between 8 to 10 hours of sleep.. Doctors advise that all people young or old take a 30 to 45 minute which will help if you are tired. Power naps help as well. If you feel and are not tired when you wake up from sleeping then you are getting enough sleep for your body. Normally people will sleep as long as they need when they do not have a set time they need to get up to do things.

You are quite tall, in our country's standards..I think you have more than enough sleep but you need to sleep earlier to wake up earlier.. So that your biological would work right.

The amount of sleep that you're getting does sound like a decent amount, however the time that you are going to sleep and getting up doesn't sound ideal. Your body ideally would prefer to sleep at 10pm and rise at 6pm, although I understand that a lot of people would struggle to get with those times exactly due to the fact that we all have different things that we need to do in life. If you try your best to go to bed a little earlier and get up earlier as well then you should find that this helps you to feel more awake when you get up in a morning.

if you feel fresh when you wake up in the morning, it means that you have slept well. but if you are tired and find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning, it means you need to sleep more. your timings really depend on what work you have to do during the day or night. there is no standard hours of sleeping, but they say that 8 hours is good enough. a good routine is to sleep off immediately when you feel drowsy. do not stay awake if you are sleepy. that hinders your sleep patterns. also have a healthy lifestyle, eat well, exercise and don't work on the computer for continuous hours. keep your mind free of clutter and stay happy. that will give you good sleep at night and you will wake up refreshed in the mornings. if your mind is not at rest when you sleep, however long you sleep, it will not be enough.

As per the doctors it is enough for adults to get a sleep of 8-9 hours a day and you are actually ticking the right box. But I would suggest you to go to bed litle early may between 10- 11PM and get up after 7-8AM. By seeing your habbit I felt sorry for you because you are missing 'Morning' in your life. You are missing the plesent morning environment. You are missing cool breeze in the morning moreover you are missing Vitamin-D. which you can get only in the morning sunlight. Vitamin-D plays a important role in the growth. Eat healthy food in appropriate time this also helps in increasing height.

I'm 21yrs old and i too sleep at around 1-2am. But i wake up max by 9oclock in the morning. And i'm 6'4" in height. I don't think there's any connection with the amount of sleep you get and your height.Sleep for atleast 7 hours and you'll be fine. If you wanna grow taller, hit the gym, consult a dietician, eat healthy.

thankyou for the advise i am considering hitting the gym :)

I think you already have an adequate sleep if you sleep for nine hours. How about drinking some milk and having some vitamins?

Thankyou! I do drink lots of milk but eating veg is not my forte, i will try though :)

jontiee: Children of your age require minimum 8 hour sleep. True when you have your school you will sleep early and get up early. Your height --it has not relationship to your sleeping pattern. If you sleep well you may be able to concentrate and study well. by the by do you like sweets or savouries very much.

Most teens always do this. You should get atleast 8 hours of sleep everynight, its the healthiest. Lack of sleep can be very bad for your help, especially because you are young. Have a great day. (:

sleeping 8 hours per day is the recomended by the people who knows about this. in my case, sleeping more or less (Im talking about extremal cases) makes me feel bad, feel tired or have a headache. may be you should go to the doctor if you feel bad. have a nice day

I think you have to sleep for 8 hours.. and I read somewhere that if you sleep over 8 hours you'll die early... haha.. but yeah, my family do 8 hours.. You shouldn't sleep late also, I think sleeping late effects... Happy mylotting and hopefully you'll get taller. LOL
