I was listening to the Northwest News this morning and it was interviewing a man who does the Weights and Measures for a portion of Washington state. He wants to make sure that some gas despensers and even taxi drivers are giving the customer all they pay for. He is testing the machines to be sure they are calibered correctly. Do you think you are getting your moneys worth? Is your areas Weights and Measures doing their job?

Every state has these people. I caught a news story on this recently and learned that the stickers - most places - how a number and that is how you can tell if you are getting more or less than what the tank shows.

On the gas pump, usually on the front (it has to be visible to the consumer) around where you insert your credit card to pay or next to the numbers that total up the gallons & price. Its a white square sticker, maybe 4 x 4, that has the date the machine was tested and the test result. I need to get gas tomorrow, if I think about it when I'm at the pump, I'll take a picture.

There is a sticker on that says how much octane it has in it. I will have to check for another one. Interesting. Picture? GOod idea. But who does the testing?

I'd be more interested in hearing what the penalties would be for those whose pumps weren't giving fair measure...We don't hear much of issues with this problem here, the inspectors seem to do a good job,but illegally obtained fuel (or illegally used fuel!) would be more of an issue..Diesel fuel for agricultural use has less tax levied on it than DERV (Diesel Engine/Road Vehicle) fuel..but the only difference is that the Farmer Fuel has a red Dye added to distinguish it,and pumps for it are simply marked as "Red Diesel"..sometimes the temptation is too much for someone with both a tractor and a Diesel SUV to go to a different pump..the only thing is,the Customs and Excise guys do random checkpoints where they can pull someone over and request they provide a fuel sample from their tank..getting caught with the wrong fuel isn't cheap..they have power to seize the car! "Laundered" fuel is another issue..the dye can be removed by whatever process, and there are unscrupulous garages that will buy it from the illegal processors and sell it full price to the unsuspecting as regular fuel..I don't drive diesel myself, but it's alleged the processed fuel can damage an engine..Me,I'd like to know there was a risk before considering using the stuff!

I would wonder what their fine would be too. And the 'laundered' stuff would be interesting to learn more about also.

Personally there is no way that people here in Washington state are getting what they pay for. It really seems that there are too many people out here who are only concerned about themselves, and how much money can you make opposed to anything else you might do. So many times the Gas pumps are set to dispense more than what you actually need, or leak gas, etc. and no one seems to care. Or from gas station to gas station your price per gallon can vary 20 cents or more depending on where you are. In all honesty Washington State needs a huge overhaul. If people would quit being worried about only themselves, and try to help the economy a little more more people would want to do more as well.

I think one good turn deserves another. I know that the gas stations vary in price but I hadn't thought about the calibers. Makes sense though.

There has always been people who cheat and think thAt they are so smart. It happens in every country regretfully and it's so wrong! I have been shafted and it always hurts. I now question everyone and thing and even scrutinise may cashier receipts as they can be wrong too. People employed to test weights and measures are so important. Hopefully most of them are honest but I am sure some are corrupt and turn a blind eye to a wrong weight if they are given money. Blessings

This is true. Bad people all around. It is good to be proactive and do your homework. I would check the place where you get your gas and see when the caliber was checked last. Doesn't hurt. Happy Mylotting.

I didn't realize there were people who did this! I never thought about this! I am sure they are all around! I am sure there are people who are doing their job right and some who are corupting the system! Have no idea how they are doing here in Wisconsin.

I knew that they existed but hadn't thought about what they actually did until this guy on the news talked about it. Makes sense. Its just one more thing that I think it is good to know exist and be watchful about.
