I know my friends are probably TIRED of hearing how "small" Austin is for me, but here is a new one! I am on Freecycle (YEAH Freecycle!!!) and I grabbed at an offer for cassette tapes from a guy. I got the tapes and it turned out he lived on a little street that I've driven by all my life and WANTED to drive down, but since it was a dead end, I never felt I could do so. I told him that I was EXCITED to get there because of that, and sure enough, I was rewarded by a cute little neighborhood and a pretty little garden circle at the end before going to the address. He hadn't put the tapes out so I had to knock on his door. So, he asked, since I obviously knew the area, where I used to live. I told him that I first lived on Madrona Drive. He asked what address and I told him. Turned out that HE lived on Madrona Drive from 1985 until a couple of years ago! He named off one family and I said "yes" and then he mentioned another one and I said the son was in my graduation class, then I mentioned one and he knew him too! It was so funny/cool! Granted, there was 22 years between the time we moved out and he moved in, but still! The really neat thing is that Madrona Dr is ONLY a block long! (a long block, but still only a block - 4600 to 4616 on the even side of the street 01 to 11 maybe on the odd side. Still... how cool is that? You ever driven by a street you wanted to go down but didn't have a reason to? Ever met someone who lived on a street you used to live on? (I mean in block area not like Lamar Blvd in Austin that runs all the way north to south...) I did used to work with a gal who actually lived ON the street I currently live on!

well since I live in the same city all of my life, yes, my friend T and I grew up on Workman Street. We are still friends today. I live right now a bit far from him, but moving on the 1st back into the area where he is living now we will be a 10 minute walk from each other again.

I've lived in Austin for most of my life, but Austin has gone from a small city to a major city in that time. And, I've really never been that friendly...

That's like my mother and her sister-in-law. They went to school together and kind of knew each other, but really didn't know her until her brother married her.

First off, if I want to go on a street, I do, even if it is just to look around. I live in a very small town, so it would be surprising if I did not meet someone that used to live where I live, etc.

This is the kind of neighborhood where if they see a strange car they are likely to take down the license number...

When I moved from Vancouver to Guelph, I worked with a woman who at one time had lived in Vancouver, too. It turned out she had lived in the very same apartment building I had lived in before I bought my condo (not at the same time, though).

That's sort of like Maggiepie who met someone who lived in the same building, just across the hall from her apartment, several years apart - and this place only had FIVE units!

That's cool. I grew up in a small area, so most people know each other, and many are related or have relatives in common. For instance, one of my classmates had an aunt who was married to one of my cousins (like a third cousin or something like that).

I've never lived around relatives, we moved to Texas when I was small and the rest of the family is in New Jersey. But I had a co-worker who grew up in a large and complicated family, where she was adopted by an uncle or something of her bio-mother and she was confused about if that person was an "uncle/cousin" or a "cousin/uncle"...

I never had this happen to me! Never! I grew up on small farm in central Wisconsin. I lived there until I was 24. I have been living in Sheboygan for 26 years now. I grew up between towns called Weyauwega and Fremont! I grew up in the boonies and grew up kind of up isolated! When I moved I was in culture shock! In my life time I have moved 3 times which is fine with me!

I don't know how often we moved before we moved to Texas, at least twice. Since we moved to Texas, my parents lived in a rent house while they were building their first house. We moved out in 1963 and then lived 10 years in the next house they built. They lived in an apartment for 3 years while my sister finished up high school and then they bought another house where Mom lived until 1998. So, 23 years was my Mom's record. I moved out and into an apartment to go to grad school, dropped out and moved back to Austin. I lived in one apartment for 3 years, a rent house for 4 and then moved to this house in 1984. But still, I'm living within 7 miles of Madrona Dr, less as the bird flies.
