I'm currently off work now but I find that when I'm working full time, I don't have the time or energy to prepare a good meal! Maybe I'm making things more difficult than I need to or I need some cooking tips from you all. How often do you eat fast food or boxed foods verses doing everything from scratch? What kinds of combinations of foods do you prepare when cooking from scratch? Thanks in advance for commenting.

Preparing a good meal shouldn't take alot of time if you pay attention to what you are doing. I eat and enjoy fast food about four times a month. I enjoy home cooked meals too. I think if you think alittle ahead it shouldn't be a big and long ordeal. Say you are fixing chicken, baked potatoes and another vegetable. Prepare the potatoes and put it put them in the oven. Then fix the chicken and put it in. The chicken and the potatoes take about the same amount of time. When they are about half done steam and flavor the vegetable. Let them cool and when they are ready your other part of the meal is done too. And, if you fix more than you will eat you will have enough for another meal as well. By cleaning all your dishes and utensils as you go you won't have a big mess to clean up either. Not bad, huh?

What I cook you can't really consider to be "from scratch". Everything I cook takes maybe an hour if that. I mean, I don't like to get boxed meals or food out, but a lot of times I do get food out. Boxed foods or "the freezer section" I avoid unless it's vegetables or yeast rolls.
What I do when I do cook is find things that I can kind of "walk away from" things that I can put in a pot and let boil, stir every few minutes. Or ground beef that only takes a few minutes to cook up and then add seasonings too and let simmer. Soups are the same way, cut the items up and put them in the pot, let them cook for thirty minutes.

Ground beef is a favorite option for me. Things like meatballs, nachos, tacos, pasta with meatsauce are all fairly quick and easy to make. I find when I work all the time I like to multi task to get things done around home, so it's important to have a quick and easy start and to be able to walk away from it. Thanks for commenting.

There are a lot of options with ground beef that people just haven't thought of. I remember looking at recipes once for it and I was amazed at all that could be done, beyond my realm of thinking and at what seems a fairly cheap price with most of the spices being in the cubbard already.
Happy Cooking and Cleaning, neither of which are fun tasks.

Hello Jshean. I think that the hardest part of preparing a meal is deciding what to fix. If you ask for input from family they say what ever. To save time set up menus that have some of the same fresh ingredients. Cut those fresh ingredients up ready to be used. A lot of saving time is know how to be prepared with the ingredients and making sure they are on hand. I like kale o I have it all ready to cook and I know what recipes I can use it in.First I'll cook it with some bacon That I have chopped and fried already as well as some onions. Then I will use what is left over in kale and potato salad. Planning head is the key to making prepare meals easy.

A good list helps with that. Some how I failed to teach my daughter about cooking. When ever she goes grocery shopping she buys what she wants to fix but never checks to see what we have in the freezer or fridge or cupboard so ends up with duplicates. WE through out so much food it sometimes makes me sick.

Preparing a real good gourmet meal really takes time. It would really depends on the occasion you are in to. There are times that ordering fast food would be a quick solution. If you plan to have a good menu, you can always get recipes online and prepare a balanced menu.

Many people are like you because of the shortage of time to reach for everything. Whenever you have enough time and prepare for 1-2 days of food and preserve it so that you can skip the kitchen work for an alternative basis and use the food which has already prepared by Owen heated.
Or can be prepared nice food by consulting the ready-made recipe and can save time also. Any way, if we want to eat good food, we have to spend time accordingly.

Preparing a good meal doesn't require a lot of time or energy. I prepare most meals from scratch, and that generally takes 45 minutes or less.
It takes just minutes to prepare pasta. Slicing and sauteing veggies doesn't take long. Seitan, tempeh and tofu all cook faster than meat and tend to be healthier.
If you are looking to make heartier fare such as chili, a crock pot can be quite handy. All you have to do is add the ingredients, set the machine, and go about your day.
There is also the option of batch cooking on the weekends and freezing the food so that you can just pull it out and reheat it throughout the week on those really busy days where you just don't have the time and energy to do food preparation.

Previously when I am not working, I used to prepare meals at home.
It is a combination of fast food and fresh cooked meals. I used to
fry chicken nuggets, sausages, fish fillet for my son and at the same
time frying some fresh vegetables, steam egg and fry meat. At times
I will steam fish, and cook herbal soup etc. Children tend to eat
fast food more... so I will just fry one of their favourite item.
But since I am now working, my husband will normally order fast food
from the fast food outlet, order pizza or just order packed food.

We seldom eat at fastfood now. We always eat at home. My husband and I or our helper prepares our meal. We always chose meals that are easy to prepare but healthy and yummy since we have a toddler in the house. Nowadays, there are lots of resources available on the net that will help you with cooking good meal.

I have, for countless times eaten fast food products especially burgers. Though I prefer home cooked food, I hate the hassle and save time to spare it for doing my thing on mylot. Lol... have a nice day and delicious cooking then 'mind if you tell me you didn't burn any cakes?

I rarely eat fast food because it is not readily available to me. This is probably good for me but sometimes I really crave to have some fast food like a big mac from mcdonalds or something - anything.
We have pretty simple meals most of the time though. Mashed potatoes and gravy, a hamburger with a side dish, soups and sandwiches...
I was going to suggest a crock pot meal. Perhaps if you have one you can create a meal before you go somewhere and it will cook during the day but I don't know if this is the option for you. Its not safe to leave it on by itself with no one home and unless you are sure you can be home it can be over cooked too.
My suggestion is to look up some fast recipes. Something that is not going to take long but at least it will be a change from fast foods.

I hardly eat fast food or boxed food becausse they are unhealthy. My husband and I cooked three meals at home, though sometimes we are tired after work, but for the child, we must cook. I know some parents in my country didn't do breakfast for the child, they went to the street and bought some steamed stuffed buns for breakfast. But i think it is not good.
