Another Semi-Odd Ingredient ~ Hearts of Palm

I saw this being used on a cooling show the other night. I never knew what it was, just heard of it. They said it was actually the root or stem of a palm tree. Have you ever tasted it? Is it something you like eating? I want to try it as I love root veggies. I have one fave I eat but now I can't recall the name if it, it is in mixed frozen veggies bags at the grocery store and it's another white root vegetable that almost looks like it when sliced. Can anyone recall what I'm trying to think of? It will come to me tomorrow I bet.

I have heard of them only a few times myself, but not looked up the price. They do seem like they might be something expensive for some reason. Almost like a delicacy cause they are not overly common.

I agree, I can imagine the price of it. But if its not common it would be hard to find, or order as well. Now Im interested at what it tastes like, and in dishes.

I love hearts of palm. You can buy them canned and use them cut up in green salads as I do or in canapes as appetizers. What I eat is white, soft and the produce is kept in a vinegary water in the can.

Interesting! Although I don't like vinegar. But I would love to try them in a salad. Thanks for the idea! What kind of a taste do they have?

They probably taste good in the salad cause they are already packed in the vinegar which many people use in some salads anyways. Good suggestion! I would love to know how they taste also.

I really like to eat palmito, or heart of palm, but it's not often that one comes across it. Palmito is really the root of a palm tree, but when one eats it, that is the end of that palm tree. I guess it does not sound so nice when one discovers what it really is. It is almost like eating a baby, or soon to be one, I suppose.

Yes, I have tried hearts of palm and they are delicious, but the problem is that one has to kill the palm tree to get it! So it is not like a fruit, but more like the heart of it! As far as the other vegetable you mentioned, it might be celery root, or celeriac, which makes nice salads and is very healthy. They also use it for making soups, as it gives it a nice flavor!

I like brussel sprouts and broccoli. My daughter likes cauliflower and my grandson will eat brocolli and grean beans. I would love to eat alot of the root veggies like rutibagas and turnips, carrots and onions, and such as those. We have some celery in the fridge too. All are tasty and great in soups for Wintertime.

Have you ever had artichoke? With butter or mayonaise they are delicious. And they have a heart too. Best part.

Wow, and I think hearts of anchovies are already odd, how clueless I really am when it comes to cooking! I love vegetables and I don't mind roots or stems, I actually prefer them than any meat. Since I am still learning how to cook, most of the people I know advise me to try their own versions of vegetable dishes because they said there is minimal error in preparing veggies.

Hehe, anchovies are just odd tasting! To me anyways. I would think that I have heard of them being on pizza and in some TV dinner type of food only chopped up really fine so that you don't even know they're there. I probably have eaten them in that kind of way before after reading alot of labels of foods in my lifetime. You are learning how to cook? Good for you, it's not really that hard, unless you get into the more sophisticated dishes. The 'main' recipes are what I mostly do anyways. All veggies are good for you, and good luck with all of your future food endeavors!

Palm hearts are used in a lot of Filipino dishes. I remember eating some kind of salad with palm hearts, jackfruit, and coconut milk. Not a fan of that one but my friends seem to enjoy it.
